Sixty-one anti-torture protesters were arrested outside the White House on Thursday in a planned act of mass civil disobedience at the end of an event organized by Witness Against Torture and Amnesty International.

The protesters -- wearing black hoods and orange jumpsuits -- were part of a larger group of 150 that marched in a slow procession from the Capitol to Lafeyette Park across from the White House to protest the torture of detainees held in U.S. counter-terror efforts. Before the group of 61 triggered arrest by blocking the sidewalk outside the White House, speakers in Lafeyette Park demanded that the Obama administration close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay and investigate and prosecute officials of the previous administration who crafted harsh interrogation policies.

"This is the 101st day of the Obama administration and Gitmo is still open. That's why we're here," said organizer Frida Berrigan to the legion of detainees. "The only way to decisively break from the Bush administration is to indict those responsible" for torture.

One protester held a sign that played on Obama's campaign slogans. It said, "The Audacity of Torture" and "The Audacity of War Crimes."

"Obama presumably has to listen to the progressive wing of his party. He certainly does risk alienating his base on this issue," said WAT spokesman Jeremy Varon to the Huffington Post.

The orange-clad protesters marched toward the White House, following military-style orders from Carmen Trotta, who was wearing camo fatigues. (Varon said Trotta does not have military background.) The protesters displaced two eighth-grade classes from Michigan posing for class pictures at the White House fence.

The arrests begin as an officer tightens the cuffs on Trotta, then everyone else. WATCH:

The protest is wrapped up as a police officer neatly folds the protesters' banner and the last members of the group are loaded into paddywagons. WATCH:

If I lived near DC. I'd get arrested so much for protesting I'd get waterboarded twice a day.

This protest makes about as much sense as the tea baggers little get togethers. It is amazing how much the left loons and right loons look and act like mirror images of each other.

Yep, I'm a radical centrist. And, on second thought, maybe there was some excuse for this. Maybe it was planned before the President said publicly that we would no longer torture and these folks didn't want to miss out on the outing now that Spring is finally here. Or maybe the more frugal among them didn't want to waste the money they had spent on permits. Or maybe there is some other reason to get arrested for protesting something that is already over.

Yeah, protesting the systematic torture of human beings in the name of all Americans is EXACTLY the same as whining about the rich being asked to pay their fair share of taxes. Commenters like you are mirror images of my hairy brown crack.

What, we should send him flowers? He's obeying the law. Well, he's made a start at it. The law states that torture is illegal. Obama has now acknowledged that the Bush administration authorized torture. That means they broke the law. The next step is prosecution, or else we're endorsing the idea that there are two classes of citizens in this country: ordinary folks who get sent to jail for breaking the law, and political elites, who shouldn't be prosecuted because we need to "move forward" and "put this behind us." Listen, if somebody murdered my friend, I would have a HARD time "putting it behind me" until that murderer was in jail. And that's how I feel about this.

The problem with anyone complaining about Obama's performance on certain issues is that they assume he has a magic wand that can whisk away all the US's problems once he gets elected. Change and reform takes time to do, especially with issues like GITMO and torture where he has to politically maneuver himself around elected officials who will defend the two. He can't be the bipartisan president he promised to be if he strong-armed everything. He values bipartisan cooperation on every issue, and that's what he's trying to do in this case too.

Let's be patient, only 101 days have past.

The truth is that we actually lost out because these creepy, treasonous amateurs decided to get sadistic instead of serious about obtaining information. There is not a shred of evidence to support your hysterical response, which is based on nothing but lies and fear-mongering from News Corp and the illegitimate government they propped up, and there is an abundance of evidence and responsible research supporting exactly the opposite of the nonsense you spout.

They should use their time to administrate solutions, legislate, teach, bridge gaps in communication with those affected by these things.

They should become more socially activist.

Not scare the crap out of young people trying to learn the positives of government.

Bravo!!

What is seldom discussed in this TORTURE 'debate' is America's long, cruel fascination & ENTITLEMENT to beat, whip, expose, humiliate, torture, rape, and murder people: it was called "slavery."

Author Michael Lind explains how the Bush-Cheney adminsitration was the perfect expression of the "Southern Takeover of American Politics" -
http://www.amazon.com/Made-Texas-Southern-Takeover-American/dp/0465041213
- politics (winning elections) of course equals POWER - government powers & prosecutions, in raising & spending taxes, in giving your corporate friends big breaks, or crushing down on labor organizers, class-action & injury law, etc.
Elsewhere in his book, Lind specifically links "Southern Takeover of American Politics" with the Neo-CONFEDERATE agenda - the agenda that in the nearly 100 years after the Civil War saw the 15th Amendment made a hollow, lying shell -
Section 1. The RIGHT of citizens of the United States TO VOTE, SHALL NOT be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude...

SEGREGATION, of course, EXPLICITLY "DENIED or ABRIDGED the right-to-vote" based on race & color.

Lind spends much of his book discussing the CRUELTY of the Slavery & post -slavery "neo-Confederate" eras.

Of which Bush, Cheney, & Radical RightWing Republican's support for torture are all textbooks examples - "OF COURSE the Massah has a right to WHIP - to death if need be! - any uppity slaves. They THREATEN the SECURITY of the entire country with SLAVE INSURRECTION!"

thnks for dat!! "The THREAT to America from Bush & Cheney's ARAB friends (i.e. SAUDI, not Iraqi, hijackers who attacked America on 9-11) 'HAS COMPLETELY ERASED' America's needs to... you know, FOLLOW the GENEVA Conventions, or the Declaration of Independence's HORROR of King George III using MERCENARIES in a war zone, or even our own professed (claimed) concern for bad ol' Saddam TORTURING Iraqis."

Smacking down Righty justifications for ANYTHING is EASY - it's just that for the past decade & half (since Clinton kicked Bush-1 out of the White House) the pouty, cry-baby Wingnuts and their corporate media establishment allies
(like Broder, Will, Gergen of the WashPost, & like Safire, Sulzberber, Friedman, Brooks at NYTimes) have DOMINATED what Americans see & hear in the press/media.

As Michael Lind points out in his book (linked above in my comment) - for the 100 years before & after the Civil War, the ante-bellum & neo-Confederate South would swear on a stack of bibles that they were "DEFENDING FREEDOM & LIBERTY!" - even as they supported first slavery, and then segregation, and relentlessly terrorized anyone who threatened those two (anything but "free") institutions.

What's the point?

We had slaves at one time, too, but we don't anymore.

Women couldn't vote or own property at one time, but that's not the case now.

But do you really think that because we don't do it anymore, that it's okay we did it then? What's more, have you actually convinced yourself that previous occurrences make this one okay? That's pathetically out-of-touch with reality.
