Torture

Sixty-one anti-torture protesters were arrested outside the White House on Thursday in a planned act of mass civil disobedience at the end of an event organized by Witness Against Torture and Amnesty International.

The protesters -- wearing black hoods and orange jumpsuits -- were part of a larger group of 150 that marched in a slow procession from the Capitol to Lafeyette Park across from the White House to protest the torture of detainees held in U.S. counter-terror efforts. Before the group of 61 triggered arrest by blocking the sidewalk outside the White House, speakers in Lafeyette Park demanded that the Obama administration close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay and investigate and prosecute officials of the previous administration who crafted harsh interrogation policies.

"This is the 101st day of the Obama administration and Gitmo is still open. That's why we're here," said organizer Frida Berrigan to the legion of detainees. "The only way to decisively break from the Bush administration is to indict those responsible" for torture.

One protester held a sign that played on Obama's campaign slogans. It said, "The Audacity of Torture" and "The Audacity of War Crimes."

"Obama presumably has to listen to the progressive wing of his party. He certainly does risk alienating his base on this issue," said WAT spokesman Jeremy Varon to the Huffington Post.

The orange-clad protesters marched toward the White House, following military-style orders from Carmen Trotta, who was wearing camo fatigues. (Varon said Trotta does not have military background.) The protesters displaced two eighth-grade classes from Michigan posing for class pictures at the White House fence.

The arrests begin as an officer tightens the cuffs on Trotta, then everyone else. WATCH:

The protest is wrapped up as a police officer neatly folds the protesters' banner and the last members of the group are loaded into paddywagons. WATCH:

I know I will get attacked for this BUT I still have to post the information. I am 100% against the republicans and the conservatives BUT I am also against the democratic party because they are essentially the same as the republican party, they are the corporate party. I used to like Obama but I no longer do because he has proven himself to be just another corporate politician. Having said this, take a look at this:

Obama's Chilling Crew: The legal harassment of those investigating Tony Rezko

No I agree with you these two birds of a feather have been flocking together for a very long time. We need a true opposition party and not one that is constantly in collusion with the other.

Obama's take on these kind of legtimate protests has me worried about him, overall, though so far I support him.

This is a classic sit-in folks! Even the same age bracket. They know what works... exhibitionism. They know Obama's doing his stuff, but these folks are "helping" with the impeachment process. They want finality!

Did some of you people just begin watching/reading the news during the 2008 campaign. It seems a lot of people were sleep other than republicans during the bush years. There was a plethora of protests under bush nationally and worldwide. Not only that, but this particular group protested in 2005, 2007, 2008, as well as this year get the wax out of your ears http://www.witnesstorture.org/node/9400). Once the majority of us realized we were duped by a "politican" in sheep's clothing the better.

It pains me that the "tea-baggers" can find common assembly for a stupid cause but something worthy like this gets ridiculed by our own people. Complacency not only lies with the general public but with many of the folks bamboozled by Obama's charm.

Tell me again why these people were arrested... Blocking the sidewalk and protesting without a permit?
Why weren't the group of students and photographers that were displaced by the protesters not also arrested? Were they not also blocking the sidewalk just as much as the protesters? Could it be that the protesters carried a message for the White House while the students did not?
I'm SURE the framers of our Constitution and Bill of Rights intended that anyone choosing to participate in a peaceful assembly MUST secure a permit prior to holding a gathering or be subject to arrest.

Perhaps what our founders MEANT to say was this:

First Amendment - Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble after they have acquired the proper permits and government approval, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Regardless of whether or not I believe in the "rightness" or "wrongness" of their message, I tip my hat to these individuals that have chosen to voice their dissent in a peaceful manner .

These people are Americans exercising their First Amendment right to voice their dissent in a peaceful and organized manner. Perhaps if more Americans had spoken out more during the last eight long years of the Bush administration these individuals might not have needed to speak out today.

Why do we need a permit to protest. Oh wait, we don't live in a free country. Mass protesting works, the government wants to scare people into not protesting. 20% of Americans are now unemployed, Good Luck Obama

Try protesting in the Wall Street district. Marchers are funnels thru corral-like fencing that feels much like a cattle chute into a slaughter house.

I laugh when at Dems saying Obama's first hundred days were about keeping his campaign promises. Did he promise to end the war in Iraq? Did he promise to reign in corporate excess on Wall St?

Did he promise to uphold the Constitution on Inauguration Day?

So, why are thr troops still there? Why are tax-payers funding Wall St bonuses? Why are protesters against torture being arrested while the torturers are free?

At least his kids got the dog.

"This is the 101st day of the Obama administration and Gitmo is still open. That's why we're here...The only way to decisively break from the Bush administration is to indict those responsible" for torture."

It will be closed soon. It takes time to ensure that the detainees are released to the appropriate national jurisdictions. Some have no jurisdictions that will accept them as citizens. It's complicated, but Obama and his people will get there.

One protester held a sign that played on Obama's campaign slogans. It said, "The Audacity of Torture" and "The Audacity of War Crimes."

It's kind of unfair to attribute torture and war crimes to Obama and his administration. If it turns out that the "American People" really demand that Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz, et al be tried for war crimes (btw---the war itself was a f c n k u g i crime), they will be tried. Don't expect one man to take that burden upon his singular shoulders, no matter how "smart" he is. Oh, and by the way, let's try ourselves! After all, we let Bush get elected and re-elected 2ce. Praise Jesus!

If you want them to be tried, make the DOJ prosecute them. Don't expect Obama to do everything on his own.

That's how we got here to begin with: national laziness.

Protesting will not cease just because the Democrats are in power.

We have to keep them accountable to the people.

I fully applaud these protesters. Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.

Am I missing something here? President Obama does not believe in torture and has made a firm statement ain't gonna happen under his watch. Maybe this is an issue of cartoonish media stunts such as PETA or inviting "Joe The Plumber" in his trade mark plaid flannel shirt to speak on behalf of American citizens as if he has a clue about what he's talking about.

To the protesters, let the president do this. If you want to protest, go and protest Bush's home in Texas, or Rice home, or any of these other torturers home. Just let the president do what is suppose to be done legally. Protest FIXED NOISE [FOX], and those home grown terriosts. PRESIDENT OBAMA will do what has to be done. He will take our country back for us. Let's just give him a chance.

What a difference a new administration makes. Protests are actually BEING COVERED BY THE MEDIA!

Yes, it's very easy to lay this all at President Obama's feet, forgetting the past eight years of blatant violations of human rights by the previous administration, but it's okay. At least we have someone in the White House who will care. Maybe, at last, these protests will have an impact.

There would have been clubs, tasers and horses involved in the Bush Whitehouse. Just like at the RNC in Minnesota. Barack's listening, I'm sure.
