Miss California Carrie Prejean To Campaign Against Gay Marriage

NEW YORK - The reigning Miss California has gone to Washington to help launch a campaign opposing same-sex marriage.

Carrie Prejean told NBC's "Today" show Thursday that she'll be working with the National Organization for Marriage to "protect traditional marriages."

The 21-year-old says that marriage is "something that is very dear to my heart" and she's in Washington to help save it.

She says many people have thanked her for standing up for traditional marriage.

Prejean was named the first runner-up to Miss North Carolina in the Miss USA pageant April 19. Her response to celebrity blogger Perez Hilton's question about legalizing same-sex marriage may have cost her the title.

Look, I support her right to have her opinion, but when she takes it that one step further and jumps on the crusade to fight against equal rights, that's one step too far. Frankly, she should take up the sword to fight against something that may actually affect her in some way, like fighting against the "dumb blonde" stereotype. Sadly, in that case, she's only adding to the problem. In both cases, I think she's on the losing side. Of course, losers do tend to be on that side.

Why do we care care what Miss California thinks? A walking advertisement speaks, and it has an opinion! Now, if it was a cat or dog or bird who was voicing an opinion about a human social issue, and human rights, I might be swayed by the packaging, because that would be very cool! Until then, I will choose to listen to an opinion regarding Gay Marriage from those informed and actively educated in the social issue with regards to psychology, law, activism, etc.

Secondly - everyone has the right to their opinion but when you are competing to represent our entire country and you answer a question in an offensive way to a segment of that country you shouldn't be surprised if people are offended. I understand there has been talk of California revoking her state crown, and she went out of her way to say "no offense."
