Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) said Friday that he will oppose legislation that would give people the option of a public health insurance plan. The move puts him on the opposite side of two-thirds of Americans.

A poll released this week by Consumer Reports National Research Center showed that 66 percent of Americans back the creation of a public health plan that would compete with private plans. Nelson, in comments made to CQ, joins the 16 percent of poll respondents who said they oppose the plan.

Nelson's problem, he told CQ, is that the public plan would be too attractive and would hurt the private insurance plans. "At the end of the day, the public plan wins the game," Nelson said. Including a public option in a health plan, he said, was a "deal breaker."

A Nelson spokesman didn't return a call for comment.

As he so often does, Nelson said, according to CQ, that he planned to form a "coalition of like-minded centrists opposed to the creation of a public plan, as a counterweight to Democrats pushing for it."

That coalition will not include 16 Democratic senators who signed a letter calling for a public plan earlier this week, including Senate leaders Dick Durbin (Ill.) and Charles Schumer (N.Y.).

If Democrats use the reconciliation process to pass health care reform, however, Nelson's vote would not be needed, as only a simple majority could pass the legislation.

'Democrat' in Nebraska is apparently and extremely loose term.

On what ground aside from Cold War Era paranoia do people oppose public health plan?

I say let the voters of Ben Nelson's district deny him his publicly funded health insurance that the rest of us are not good enough to receive by voting his butt out of government.

Yep. Get him off the public plan and on to a private plan so he can help ease their pain.

"Nelson's problem, he told CQ, is that the public plan would be too attractive and would hurt the private insurance plans." - sounds like an admission of the truth to me.

But what he's too stupid to realize (or too beholden) is the reason: most of the private plans suck, and do more for the management of the providers than for the subscribers.

I just don't get it. It seems no matter who we decide to put in government, they will s crew us. Whether it's Dem or Rep it seems as soon as they get to Washington all bets are off. Is there not a single genuine person in our government other than our President? People who aspire to be politicians are E vil on a genetic level. None of them act on our behalf, EVER, they just tell us what we want to hear and go on to become rich as/s/holes at our expense. It really makes me sick.

HERE'S SOMETHING WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO DO ABOUT IT. IF A LOT OF PEOPEL GET INVOLVED, IT MIGHT HAVE AN EFFECT.

On Monday nighyt, MoveOn.org is having an emergency internet conference with Howard Dean.regarding derailment dangers to healthcare reform. See details below. The website has a place to post questions for Dean. I'm asking him if he thinks Nelson's declarations are a real threat, i.e., can he really get enough senators to block the bill. AT THE VERY LEAST, GETTING THE ATTENTION OF DEAN ON THIS MIGHT PLANT A SEED FOR A NATIONAL EFFORT TO SHAME NELSON AND EXPOSE HIS MOTIVATIONS..

Citizens of the US should demand that taxpayer money not be used for healthcare benefits for members of Congress and their families until similar care is available to all Americans.

Members of Congress should be required to rely on private health care payment as long as they cannot muster enough votes to finally admit that purely privately funded health care for all Americans, except those who are members of Congress, is not more efficient.

I can get behind this idea, vgirl1.

After all, we don't want to force Congress to sully their principles by twisting their arms to take publicly funded health care benefits.

Voting down health care benefits for all Americans obviously means they feel having tax payers cover health costs is a bad idea, right?

Ben Nelson is not a Democrat, Blue Dog or otherwise. I hope the people of Nebraska finally realize what he is costing them as part of middle class, working America.

He has voted not as a Democratic Senator but as a Republican. Nelson has left his party and his constituents behind.

The idea that even the most efficient private health insurance company could come close to competing with a public program is ludicrous. Private companies have to deal in reality, and they don't get to write budgets that count on going into massive debt without end in sight. They don't get to just someone's taxes to get out of that debt.

they also dont jack up the prices, but are in a position to demand that the prices stay reasonable.

Apparently you haven't been jammed sufficiently by private sector insurance companies - the ones whose "consequences" include government bailout corporate welfare safety net when THEY mess up (say by, oh, I don't know, going into massive debt...) - the one's who make millions on the float by SYSTEMATICALLY refusing to pay legitimate claims on time (aka "stealing " in the "real world"). The reality is that the 20% or more administrative costs they report support this malfeasance and their contributions to the pols who answer to them. The limited "reality" that continues to be presented against changing this arrangement ignores the data, ignores the untold (literally, untold, unreported) and unnecessary suffering and the excessive WASTE that exists in the current system. What color is the sky in your world Dorothy?
