LAS VEGAS — Singer-actor-impressionist Danny Gans, who spent more than a decade as one of the most popular entertainers in Las Vegas, died Friday. He was 52. Gans was pronounced dead in his bed shortly after police and paramedics were summoned to his home about 3:45 a.m., said police spokesman Todd Rasmussen.

Foul play was not suspected, but police were investigating "according to standard procedure," Rasmussen said.

Clark County Coroner Michael Murphy released a statement saying a medical examination would be done Friday, but it could take several weeks to receive laboratory results and determine the cause of death.

Gans' manager and longtime friend, Chip Lightman, said Gans was in good health but slept poorly after Wednesday's show and took a nap late Thursday afternoon, a day off. He stayed in bed into the evening, and his wife, Julie, summoned police when she couldn't rouse him after 3 a.m.

"This makes no sense," said Lightman, who said Gans didn't use illegal drugs, didn't smoke and had no apparent medical issues. "I managed him 18 years and health was never an issue."

Lightman described Gans, who had a bit part as third baseman Deke in the 1988 baseball film "Bull Durham," as an energetic health nut who watched his diet, loved to perform, and relished his involvement in Las Vegas area fundraisers and philanthropic causes.

Gans was mourned by two Las Vegas entertainment legends, Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn.

Like Gans and Wayne Newton, the careers of the German duo became synonymous with Las Vegas after they brought their acts to the Strip.

"We were blessed to be touched by his generous spirit, kind heart and insurmountable talent," Siegfried & Roy said in a statement.

Daniel Davies Gans grew up in Torrance, Calif., met his wife in college in San Luis Obispo, and parlayed a comedy and impression routine he developed on bus rides as a minor league baseball player into a fledgling entertainment career, Lightman said.

"Danny at that time was just a fun guy on the bus," he said.

After Gans hurt his leg playing baseball, he made a first comedy club appearance on a dare. It worked, and he began honing his routine as a variety show performer in Palm Desert, Calif., before touring the country as a banquet performer for business groups.

In 1995, Gans began a one-man show, "Danny Gans on Broadway: The Man of Many Voices," at the Neil Simon Theater in New York.

"A hardworking, eager-to-please entertainer who does rapid-fire imitations of show-biz personalities ranging from Tony Bennett to Al Pacino to Sarah Vaughan," AP Drama Critic Michael Kuchwara said of Gans in a review.

Gans' dexterity switching through the voices of John Travolta, Clint Eastwood, Rodney Dangerfield, Wayne Newton, Woody Allen, Robin Leach, Bill Cosby and others in "The Twelve Days of Christmas" impressed Kuchwara, who characterized Gans' humor as "the cozy comedy of ... nudge-nudge, wink-wink reaction."

Officials at Wynn Resorts, where Gans had performed four nights a week at the 1,500-seat Encore Theater since Feb. 10, and at The Mirage, where he performed from April 2000 to November 2008, said they were stunned by Gans' sudden death.

"The loss of Danny to his wife Julie, his children Amy, Andrew and Emily is at this moment impossible to comprehend," said Steve Wynn, who installed Gans as a headliner when he owned The Mirage and hired him again to perform at Encore, a sister property to the Wynn Las Vegas.

The large electronic marquee in front of the Encore posted Gans' photograph and the message: "Our friend forever, Danny Gans. 1956-2009."

Gans worked his way up in Las Vegas, after deciding to leave Broadway in 1997 to be closer to his family in La Canada Flintridge, Calif., Lightman said.

He became a headliner at the Stratosphere hotel-casino, and the next year went to the Rio hotel-casino before Wynn brought him to The Mirage on the Strip.

"This town allowed Danny to go home and be with his family every night and not be on the road," Lightman said. "That meant the world to him, it really did. And Las Vegas embraced him and made him a household name."

Gans held a pro-am golf tournament to raise money for the Danny Gans Junior Golf Academy, which finances golf programs for children, and helped raise some $250,000 to build the Lili Claire Family Resource Center to promote awareness of Williams Syndrome and other neurogenetic disorders and birth defects. Gans also hosted an annual 5K run and children's walk in Henderson to benefit the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation.

Lightman said Gans was excited in recent weeks about plans to shoot a music video to accompany a compact disc he was recording, using several voices to sing the song "What a Wonderful World," made famous by Louis Armstrong.

"It's got Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, George Burns as the voice of `God,' Kermit the Frog, and closes with Louie Armstrong," Lightman said.

Lightman said it was among Gans' favorite songs.

"It was something he was so proud of," he said.

I saw his signs and ads for his show when I was in Vegas last year. He was also recently interviewed on Larry King. Really struck me when I saw this headline. Very sad stuff.

He was our city's best entertainer by far! All of us in Las Vegas will definitely miss him. He always knew how to make people smile and was a true legend. RIP Danny...Las Vegas and this world will never forget you!

I met Danny Gans, very briefly, when I was living in Vegas several years ago. He was a very courteous person, and I thought, a good role model for other performers.
Thanks for the memories Danny!

One o these "Ladies and Gentlemen, you look marvalous. Give yourself a big round of applause."

The Wayne Newton of comedy, I suppose, but I swear, I never heard of him until reading the headline.

Speaking of Wayne Newton, maybe one of you fans can riddle me this: Newton's one and only hit was Danka Schon, a song that really had more to do with WWII than the 60s. So why did he get top-billing in Las Vegas ever since?

Now don't get me wrong. I like Newton. He's a class act. But why was one of the things you absolutely had to do once you got to Las Vegas was catch his show? Why did all the wives demand this?

Interesting guy, though. He once threatened to kick Johnny Carson's ass if he didn't quit making fun of him.

You obviously don't know much about Wayne Newton. He had many hits including Red Roses for A Blue Lady. He was a child star who continues today to enteraint millions. He's also my son's Godfather. He's a rare talent. D.

Wayne Newton's first top 40 hit, I think, was "Dreams Of The Everyday Housewife", about 1967 or so. I only remember that factoid because a friend of mine, Chris Gantry, wrote the song. Another friend, at the time, said, "Wayne Newton SINGS like the everyday housewife". That was mean, even if true. I've never heard anything bad about Wayne Newton, either.

I admit, his moustache is kinda creepy, though. Boston Blackie sued to get it back, but his case was thrown out of court because William Powell's barber had established prior copyright on the design.

After Elvis, Wayne put on the best and quintessential 'Vegas Show'. He played a dozen instruments, sang a ton of hit songs, had dancers etc. I saw him at a dinner show at the Sands when I was 13.

I've never seen his Vegas show, but I saw him often on TV in the 60s and 70s and he's an amazing talent. His stint on "Dancing With The Stars" is the only time I've ever seen him NOT excel at something.

His was the best act in Vegas. Very talented... My favorite was where, between 2 spotlights, he would do a singing duet between Jimmy Stewart and a Kermit the Frog puppet. Amazingly talented. People don't normally die in their sleep at 52, especially someone who looked so fit. There's got to be more to this story.

I have never heard of him, I'll take your word for the amazingly talented. I'm going to go google him. Usually my head is filled with useless entertainment knowledge so I'm suprised I didn't know who he was. I'm ashamed of the useless entertainment knowledge by the way.

Wow this is too bad, recently I was driving back from the left coast and saw so many of his signs along I-15, and before Danny there was a whole bunch of David Copperfield signs that used to be along the highways.

Never saw his act, though my wife kept bugging me to go. I heard he was a great show, but I'm just not that into Vegas acts. Anyway, I saw a profile of him on some entertainment show that made a big deal out of his injecting his evangelical Christian faith at the end of every show. And since I'm no fan of public displays of faith like that, I would probably have barfed at that point.

RIP, Mr. Gans. Condolences to his family.

I'm always amazed and humbled to learn of people whose names I don't know, who are celebrities in worlds I've never occupied, and realize that we all have lives in which our personal activities of daily living loom so large as to blind us to our vanishingly small place in space and time.

I mean all respect to Mr. Gans, although I knew nothing of him, just as most know nothing of me. I can only say that he clearly gave many people a good time and earned his living honestly and personally and through hard work and application. Just things I respect, along with a good Al Pacino. RIP, sir, and thanks.

This guy was the man, the last great talent worth seeing in Sin City besides the usual oldtimers. Now there is no one left and no reason at all to go to Vegas unless you wanna go broke. Sad news, indeed.
