ATLANTA — The swine flu virus that has frightened the world is beginning to look a little less ominous. New York City officials reported Friday that the swine flu still has not spread beyond a few schools. In Mexico, very few relatives of flu victims seem to have caught the virus.

One flu expert says there's no reason to believe the new virus is a more serious strain than seasonal flu. And a federal health official said the new flu virus doesn't appear to have genes that made the 1918 pandemic flu strain so deadly.

It's too soon to draw any definitive conclusions about what this variation of the H1N1 virus will do. Experts say the only wise course is to prepare for the worst. But in a world that's been rattled by the specter of a global pandemic, glimmers of hope are welcome.

President Obama noted Friday that it's not clear that the swine flu outbreak will turn out to be any worse than ordinary flu.

"It may turn out that H1N1 runs its course like ordinary flus, in which case we will have prepared and we won't need all these preparations," Obama said.

But "we're taking it seriously," he said. Even if the flu turns out mild now, it could come back in a deadlier form during the normal flu season, he said.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the illness so far had proven to be "a relatively minor annoyance."

City health officials say they have found few signs that the local outbreak of swine flu is spreading beyond a few pockets or getting more dangerous. The city has 50 cases, the most of any city in the United States.

Dr. Peter Palese, a leading flu researcher at New York's Mount Sinai Medical School, said the new virus appeared to be similar enough to other common flu strains that "we probably all have some type of immunity."

"There is no real reason to believe this is a more serious strain," he said.

Also Friday, an official with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the new swine flu virus lacks the genetic traits that made the 1918 pandemic strain so deadly.

CDC flu chief Nancy Cox said the good news is "we do not see the markers for virulence that were seen in the 1918 virus." Nor does swine flu virus have the virulence traits found in the H5N1 strain of bird flu seen in recent years in Asia and other parts of the world, she said.

"However, we know that there is a great deal that we do not understand" about the strength of the 1918 virus and others that caused serious illnesses, she said. "So we are continuing to learn."

Another CDC official, Dr. Anne Schuchat, said preliminary studies suggest that in U.S. households with an infected person, about a quarter of other family members are getting sick as well.

In some pandemics, the overall infection rate has been as high as 35 percent, Cox said.

She noted the CDC has entered the gene information for the new virus into databases that are publicly available.

"A lot of researchers around the world can begin to look at those gene sequences as well, in case they see something we haven't already seen," she added.

The global flu epidemic early last century was possibly the deadliest outbreak of all time. That virus also was an H1N1 strain _ different from the H1N1 strain involved in the current outbreak _ and struck mostly healthy young adults. Experts estimate it killed about 40 to 50 million people worldwide.

People people people.. They all start softly, this was a genetic SWINE flu 10 years ago, now its jumped to humans.. Ahh more then likely it only has to change a little to cause a ton of deaths. It has happened before and WILL happen again. Sitting around thinking it will not will just get you in a plastic box.

Decent Q&A about Swine flu here, backing up words with scientific explanations people can understand to dispel some fears and explain where the real concerns lie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma7IeWRH7y0

I just got an email from my sister who says her husband saw on FOX news a report of a pig farm in Canada whose herd has contracted Swine Flu from the owner, who had just returned from Mexico. Interesting, if true.

So now everyone is going to make fun of those who urged caution and took extra measures as over-reacting. But it ain't over yet. So suppose all of a sudden it does end up being as serious as they thought possible, and they didn't take those precautions. Panic and pandemonium, and blame to the WHO and CDC for not doing what they just did, and now are going to be ridiculed for. Geez, people!!

Viruses are serious. I would rather have our public health agencies overreact about them than underreact.

As Mz Palin would say .. "Darn'd TOOT'n". Look what would have happened to Orleans if the government hadn't been totally top of the situation and thoroughly prepared for that crisis. Hey wait a minute ..

There's only been one death in the US out of 224 confirmed cases. That's reassuring. But there are also 30 hospitalizations...about 13% of cases. Of hospitalized patients most are young, many are severely ill, even in ICU and requiring ventilator support. Now imagine 100 million cases and try to picture how the hospitals will struggle to cope with 13 million hospitalized cases. Yes, seasonal influenza kills thousands, but from my experienc working in hospitals, these are disproportinately the very elderly, the very ill, and often DNR cases, and heroic efforts are generally not taken at the request of the patient and of the family. When the victims are the young the situation will be very, very different. So I am not reassured yet. There is simply not enough information to either panic or to be reassured. Until then, it seems prudent to be cautious.

But wait. If the virus is not as potent then how can liberals still blame Republicans? How can liberals panic about an epidemic if it is not as potent? This can't be right. There must be a pandemic. Liberals said so. We should all listen to Joe Biden and avoid trains, planes and automobiles.

Excuse me, but you're a little mixed up!!! It was your very own Michelle Bachmann who implied that the Democrats were responsible for it!! The Democrat response to that was to point out her error. How quickly we try to re-write history.

First of all I have no idea who you're talking about. Unlike liberals I don't live by what I hear on television, unlike you Keith Olberman and Chris Matthews groupies. Second of all liberals were on this site and in Congress blaming Republicans for stripping pandemic flu spending from the Economic Stimulus bill. The last time I checked Michelle Bachmann was not an elected official.

The CDC has revealed that there were two cases in San Diego of young children having swine flu on March 30. They survived, but they had not had any contact with porks or been in Mexico. And that was before the outbreak of swine flu in Mexico. The CDC is still investigating if the H1N1 virus originated in the US.

There is no pandemic. The news about the bad banks is coming out this week. The "pandemic" is made up, so that people will not stage runs on the banks or organize a revolution.

Everything that comes out of our government is a lie. The government of the United States is a mafia-like organization designed to rob the people. It does not serve the people, it robs them. The populace is a "human resource" to be milked for the enrichment of the "elite".

Everything that comes out of our government is not a lie.

But there's strong evidence to suggest that the government does make the truth work for them, even if that means strongly modifying the truth. But how is that much different from most folks?

1918 spanish flu came in 2 waves

1st wave was mild with few deaths

2nd wave was the killer that killed 5-10% of world population

Get real.. this is not 1916 ... hygene is better. People are healthier and the vast majority has access to health care who know what to do. Back then things were a lot different.
I think everyone is overreacting to this. The regular flu is way worse and people around the world get it and the newsies don't go nuts.

I believe you mean 1918----

If this present H1N1 virus proves to be not as lethal a killer as the 1918 H1N1 virus I will be very happy. It is good to that the WHO and the CDC are monitoring the situation.

If there is every a pandemic it will not matter if people are "healthier" because the virus if it is highly pathogenic then your body has no defense against it. As a matter of fact the "heathy" young people in their 20s-40s were the ones who died from the 1918 influenza outbreak as far as percentages go. (I belief the reason they died is because their own immune system reacted to the point that it was the bodies worse enemy, it literally killed people fighting the virus).

As far as "access to health care" if there ever was a pandemic the last place you would want to go and would even get help is the local hospital to this day. It would be overwhelmed, there would not be enough doctors, nurses, or room to help all the people who would get sick.

One other point there are a lot more people than 1918. More people would need help.

Any influenza is bad and just to do the things like covering your mouth when you cough, washing your hands and not touching your face after you go touching stuff that doesn't look too clean is a good way to keep you and your family healthy.

I was discussing this with some online aquaintances who are Fox News devotees and, and someone mentioned that they had reported two deaths in LA. That turned out to be not true and had not been reported on any news station that I watched. When I questioned it, I was told I had accused the person who mentioned it of lying. Then she practically crowed when the poor Mexican child died in Houston ("See! I wasn't lying!"), oddly enough without expressing the least concern for the child. This is a MOMMY board of all things. Then the subject quickly turned to hoarding food.

One of the mommies chimed in that Fox News reports a lot of things that the other news channels don't, and that's why she loved them. Things that make you wonder... Things like the reports of Obama being a fascist. Things like torture is okay if it works. Things like Michelle Bachmann's Wisdom Of The Day. Those kind of things, I guess.

I like that line in the movie Michael Clayton that was spoken by Sydney Pollack's character (Clayton's boss in the law firm). He said:

"People are f----'in incomprehensible!"

Similarly, George Carlin used to shout it out loud:

"People are f----'in goofy"

This is just the way it is. Even in this age of information by the terabyte-load, people choose to believe in whatever makes them feel good even if it's BS.

The rethugs were happy to use the fear generated by the MSM, to boost their bigoted and racist "Immigration Propaganda", even though it still isn't clear where the virus originated.............

Because some persons who were sick with the flu in California had NOT been to Mexico, had NO contact with Mexicans, and had NO contact with persons who had been in contact with Mexicans...

MEXICO WAS NOT AT ALL IN THE EQUATION IN THOSE CASES, AND THEREFORE MEXICO COULD NOT BE BLAMED FOR THEIR ILLNESS.
