McClatchy:

If it weren't for the plea deal that his dad, former Veco chief executive Bill Allen, made with federal prosecutors, Mark Allen might not have been in the winner's circle Saturday at the Kentucky Derby, celebrating the victory of his thoroughbred Mine That Bird and a $2 million purse.

I caught the brief post-race interview with him as he was making his way to the winner's circle. He seemed rather uncomfortable as the announcer played the "backwoods, pick-up truck" angle. I see now that he was probably thinking, "Whatever I into this microphone now WILL be held against me."

Now I understand what I was seeing yesterday. He sure didn't like talking about that. What a phony. These horses have to put up with way too much.

The horse business is full of all kinds of colorful people. Its one of the few things left that hasn't been reduced to predicable sameness. Except for the studs who have to do the same thing day in and day out all through breeding season!

If you know where to plug in, you can find businesspeople, lawyers, politicians and judges all lit up on the same circuitry who are ready and willing to enable whatever illegal endeavor you might be involved in - so long as they can see something in it for themselves.

Hats off to Richard Mauer for this investigative report.

Gee, what a shocker. Son of a rich guy gets to keep all the corrupt money and go on to win some more in life. He paid 400k for that horse not 9500. This "good old boy" is another phony rich boy trying to play modern day cowboy. And getting away with it. Everybody loves him today.

The biggest scandal of all is horse racing, a "sport" of unbelievably enormous cruelty.

Absolutely correct.

None of the horses should be given any drugs, and then go race.

Anybody who does that is an animal HATER ! !

Will it ever end - the corrupt politicians taking bribes and bending legislation so their rich thieving buddies can make even more money and then they plea bargain themselves out of ever serving time and THEN they become rich playboys, laughing and having a great time on the money they stole from the country. I am so sick of it.

It will continue until the people have had their fill of being used, abuse , lied to , cheated against, and the nation's resources stolen from them. And only then will the people have had enough.

It will continue until we throw them out...elect someone else...who then goes corrupt...and we throw them out. and on and on and on...Just be thankful that we can throw them out. Not everyone can.

If we CAN, WHY haven't we????????????
Now they are not going to raise SS to the COL index in 2010! WIth the 5.8% increase in 2009, it isn;t enough to buy NECESSITIES!
Instant mashed potatoes increased 100% $1.39 to $2.39 in 1 YEAR.
Instant coffee increased about 30% $6.59 - $7.99 in 1 1/2 YEARS.
BOTTOM line...............MY TIME IS BEING STOLEN! Now i have to peel potatoes, ( which I can grow, at a loss of my time as well) wait for the Melita to drip through ( & purchase flters) And WORSE Nescafe ( which I have been drinking since 1962) now bottles in plastic, which tasts like ****!
What's a 70 year old need with time? Finally after devoting my time to family working to earn money I am finally getting to paint pictures postponed for 40 50 years.
SInce I have invested about 50 years in gaining the knowledge I have................I think it's only fair that I have a chance to use it before I die! These CEO "talents" have a lOT less to OFFER than I do!
And as for turning the art field over to the kids...............would you organize a non-profit to support kids doing brain surgery? I didn't think so!
