Condoleezza Rice

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice stirred controversy last week when, under questioning from students at Stanford University, she insisted that the Bush administration had not tortured and claimed, "by definition, if it was authorized by the president, it did not violate our obligations under the Convention Against Torture."

On Sunday, during her first public appearance in Washington since she left office, Rice was questioned again about her involvement in President Bush's torture policy -- this time by fourth-grader Misha Lerner at a Jewish day school. The Washington Post reports:

Misha Lerner, a student from Bethesda, asked: What did Rice think about the things President Obama's administration was saying about the methods the Bush administration had used to get information from detainees?

Rice took the question in stride. saying that she was reluctant to criticize Obama, then getting to the heart of the matter.

"Let me just say that President Bush was very clear that he wanted to do everything he could to protect the country. After September 11, we wanted to protect the country," she said. "But he was also very clear that we would do nothing, nothing, that was against the law or against our obligations internationally. So the president was only willing to authorize policies that were legal in order to protect the country."

Watch:

Misha's mother Inna told the Post that Misha originally planned to ask a tougher question -- "If you would work for Obama's administration, would you push for torture?" -- but he was asked to change it. "They wanted him to soften it and take out the word 'torture.' But the essence of it was the same."

"Let me just say that President Bush was very clear that he wanted to do everything he could to protect the country. After September 11, we wanted to protect the country,"

Are you for real Ms. Rice? If what you say is true, why did you end up going after Saddam Hussein instead of Osama bin Laden?

That is such a good question... I wonder why? How many people from Iraq were on the planes that fateful day?

There was one guy on the plane who was an "accused Iraqi", I can't remember his name, but in all of the charts, the govt tried to slip in the fact that one was from Iraq. It was obviously a weak attempt as even a cursory google check revealed the guy to be from Yemen. Yet, the FBI/CIA tried to pin him as an Iraqi because he apparently strayed across a border on his travels or something. Nobody bought it, and never has been brought up since.

Also please note the phrasing: "AFTER September 11, we wanted to protect the country." Is she implying that from Jan 20th-Sept 11, protecting the country wasn't much of a priority?

Repeat after me, Condi, "Just because the President SAYS it doesn't break the law doesn't mean it doesn't."

Sheesh!

Well, to be fair, she should be able to handle a 4th grader's questions. After all, she had to deal with Bush's moronic maunderings. When he got bored trying to color and stay in between the lines he probably asked her questions like, "Why can't we burn the Constitution?" and "Do we have any more audio tapes of the enhanced questioning sessions? Those guttural screams help me sleep at night..."

Hey! There's no need to put down 4th graders and call them s.t.u.p.i.d.! The majority are much smarter than Bush could ever dream of being!

What she will have to do is have all the questions presented in advance. You can't go around just answering any question, now, can you? Or, she can just speak to captive audiences who are just there to agree with her to start with.

At the end Bush could only speak in front of soldiers and Rice can only speak in front of 4th graders. I believe Cheney is in a dark room and speaking to himself. Rumsfeld isn't speaking because he doesn't know what he knew when he didn't know that he knew it.

I don't understand this form of thinking: that waterboarding was OK because it does not kill. Not killing is the point of torture. Case in point: my grandmother was involved in an infamous incident called the Double Tenth, during WW11 where a group of civilians were tortured (including waterboarded) by the Japanese Kempetai. After the war the Kempetai operatives were tried and convicted and waterboarding was deemed one of the worse tortures, if there is a hierarchy. My grandmother was not touched physically (but she was brought to the brink of death and BACK ) by her captives.. I wrote a play www.tighsolas.ca/page745.html... (or put Dorothy Nixon + Double Tenth Incident into seach engine. This incident sheds light on the philosophy of torture. I used a book the Trial of Sumida Haruzo for background as well as my grandmother's memoirs of the event.

I don't see her asking about waterboarding

I don't understand why the press makes the entire torture debate about waterboarding. None of the people who were tortured to death were waterboarded. It wasn't one of our main methods of torture.
This girl seems to understand the issue better than the headline writers

You would think Rice would stop making the speeches to children or college students. Everyone is looking for answers including fourth graders.

The Bullwhip was used legally on the backs of slaves, to keep the powerful, privileged plantation owners "safe".

Condi Rice who were your great grandparents?
