ROME — Director Ron Howard claimed Sunday that the Vatican interfered with efforts to get permits to shoot certain scenes of his "Angels & Demons" religious thriller in Rome _ a charge the Vatican said was purely a publicity stunt.

The film, which stars Tom Hanks and is based on the best-selling novel by Dan Brown, has its world premiere Monday in Rome.

"Angels & Demons" combines an ancient secret brotherhood called the Illuminati, a papal conclave and a high-tech weapon threatening to destroy the Vatican.

At a press conference Sunday, Howard said he hadn't sought cooperation from the Vatican based on the opposition he encountered filming "The Da Vinci Code," another Brown novel that angered many Catholic leaders.

But he said the Vatican nevertheless exerted influence regarding his filming permits, and he was told it would not be possible even to shoot scenes in Rome that had churches in the background.

"When you come to film in Rome, the official statement to you is that the Vatican has no influence," he said. "Everything progressed very smoothly, but unofficially a couple of days before we were to start filming in several of our locations, it was explained to us that through back channels and so forth that the Vatican had exerted some influence."

"Was I surprised? No. Am I a little frustrated at times? Sure," he said.

Nevertheless he said he felt that he was able to preserve the overall "Angels & Demons" experience despite the restrictions by recreating scenes on sets. For the Sistine Chapel alone, some 20 members of the production crew _ posing as tourists _ took photos of all the frescoes, floor mosaics and paintings of the tiny chapel where popes are elected _ until they were told to stop, the film's Web site says.

Angels & Demons features Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon of "The Da Vinci Code" fame, played by Hanks in the movie. In the film, the Vatican turns to Langdon after the Illuminati kidnap four cardinals considered front-runners to be the next pope, and threaten to kill one an hour and then explode a bomb at the Vatican.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, refused to comment on Howard's allegations about church interference, saying his charges were purely designed to drum up publicity for the film.

Last summer, Rome's diocese confirmed it had barred producers from filming inside two churches because the movie didn't conform to the church's views.

In addition to Hanks, the film stars Ewan McGregor as the camerlengo, the prelate who takes care of matters dealing with a papal death and runs the Vatican until a new pontiff is elected. Israeli-born actress Ayelet Zurer plays Dr. Vittoria Vetra, a scientist who helps Langdon crack the codes to save the cardinals.

The 2006 film "The Da Vinci Code" took in more than $750 million worldwide. It prompted calls for boycotts by church leaders worldwide with the idea that Jesus married and fathered children and by depicting the conservative Catholic movement, Opus Dei, as a murderous cult.

Reaction from church leaders to "Angels & Demons" has been more muted, though one Italian bishop, Monsignor Antonio Rosario Mennonna, said Saturday the film was "highly denigrating, defamatory and offensive" to the Catholic Church, the ANSA news agency reported.

At the press conference, Hanks drew laughs when was asked what the toughest stunt was during filming. His answer? Simply running.

"There is not a regular cobblestone, there is not a straight step, there is not an easy way to cross any street in all of the Eternal City," he said. "Essentially death traps and twisted ankles await you any time you try to go out for a slow stroll. How we did not come out with shin splints and ace bandages around our limbs I will never ever know.

"It must have been divine intervention," he said.

It is amazing that the Vatican even has the audacity to interfere with Howard's film. Now I need to organize pilgrimages of people to see the film as soon as possible. Then I'm going to make a film entitled Save The Altar Boys. Rev. Bookburn - Radio Volta

I've been hearing a lot of controversy surrounding this movie: http://www.newsy.com/videos/critics_see_demons_in_movie/ and I knew this would be the case after what happened with DaVinci Code. The Catholic Church gets all up in arms over nothing and then Ron Howard and Tom Hanks laugh all the way to the bank. I can't remember if the Catholic Church interfered with the last film, but I heard Howard wasn't even allowed to shoot in Rome if a Church was in the back ground of the shot. I thought the last movie was bogus, I'd read DaVinci Code so the twist didn't have it's effect on me. I'm excited about this one though, I've heard it's better in the first place.

First movie was a plodder. Fell asleep somewhere in the middle and woke up somewhere near the end.

Maybe this one won't be such the sleeper.

" And the power of God shall unit us all" ( From the book: Angels & Demons), I believe this film has promise to show there is a single force moving within all of us. They don't seem to be reinventing the wheel here, although the concept of the philosophy sounds intriguing.
Too many critics before the movie spoils the show. So defensive about something you haven't seen yet. Not even symbolism could describe it with such treason for repression.

The Vatican is a holy place. The fact that Ron Howard wants to make a movie anywhere near there should be denied. What gives people the right to feel that nothing is sacred. Something has to remain untouched and unmanipulated just to please public consumption. I feel that if Ron Howard had any respect he would find other ulternatives to make and produce his movie. The very idea of insinuating a public spectacle in a place that is hundreds of years old and considered one of the holiest places in the world is disrespect of the highest level. No other culture would dare even approach such an idea. However, we Americans demand what we want and if we don't get it we immediately let the world know that someone else was wrong for not going along with what we wanted. Howarde should consider something important other than himself.

I'm no longer Catholic and I like Ron Howard (loved your Obama campaign ads, Ron!!), but I'm completely with you on this one. I agree w/everything you said and point out that these things always seem somehow directed at the Catholic Church- I don't think anyone would ever dream of invading a Buddhist monastery or if refused permission to film, say, in a sacred Hindu temple, there'd barely be a peep of the outcry people seem ready to lodge against the Vatican. Also, allow me to address the very obvious: What??!!! The Vatican did not support Ron Howard in making a film that presents (in its view) a distorted picture of Catholicism??? Is ANYone really shocked over this?? Do you think any other religion would likewise support such a film?? Please, Ron- you are being a bit disingenuous here, don't you think?

The Vatican is a sovereign entity so the entire city is holy. Perhaps he should've done shots of the Vatican but filmed the movie elsewhere.

I don't consider the Vatican one of the holiest places on earth, perhaps Ron doesn't either. However, I would respect their wishes. I find the Catholic hierarchy full of church secrets with a bunch of men living there while, dictating millions of lives.

The superstitious owners don't like filming: I guess they own those prime sites.

Any abuse victims fancy suing for damages at the corporate rather than the subsidiary level?

*J*e*w*s cried, shouted, hollered, whined, screamed and everything under the sun about Passion of the *Christ. Why? Come to find out it was just a biblical depiction of what the ancient text called the *b*i*ble and nothing defamatory.

The patriarchal Vatican is upset because they don't want any secrets in the basement told.

I believe this sequel and the first were works of fiction. That means "made up" for those on PuffPost.

For another point of view about Ron Howard's quest for publicity, check out the link below. It includes a nice interview an Opus Dei priest who sounds humorously lackadaisical about the whole thing:
"As a general rule, no commercial films are filmed in churches in Rome, and no exception was made for 'Angels & Demons," Father John Wauck said. "I think the church's attitude has been, from the beginning, 'hands off.' In 'The Da Vinci Code,' there were serious issues, such as who Jesus Christ was or the nature of church in the course of history, but none of them is taken in 'Angels & Demons.' It's simply, you know, a thriller," he said. The movie may even help Rome by promoting tourism there, which is "not a bad thing." http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Movies/05/04/ent.angels.and.demons/index.html

Then there's Ron Howard backpedaling:
"Howard himself downplayed reports that Rome and Vatican officials hampered production by refusing permission to film in certain locations. 'Probably a little more has been made of that,' he said."

I don't like being played, whether it's by a conservative alarmist or a commercial entertainer.

The problem is that the Vatican thinks that non-catholics will see the movie and accept it as gospel truth,

Many will. Didn't you see the nuts wetting themselves because their eyes were opened by Da Vinci Code.

I say Baa. They respond.
