I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Democrats eager to see what kind of Senator Arlen Specter would be now that he has left the Republican Party likely weren't counting their blessings after watching his appearance on "Meet the Press" this Sunday.

The Pennsylvanian, while insisting that his switch in party affiliation was driven as much by values as politics, nevertheless came out forcefully against two of progressives' most cherished policies.

On the Employee Free Choice Act, which would allow for easier unionization, Specter strongly suggested -- as he did during the speech announcing his party switch -- that he would support a filibuster of the legislation. "I'm still against that bill," he said. "Democrats are all for it. Republicans are all against it. I'm the critical vote. If I see that there are other issues where I feel a matter of conscience, I will continue a filibuster against legislation."

On a public option for health insurance -- which conservatives claim will end the private market, but most observers say could bring down the costs of coverage for millions of Americans -- Specter said he would be in opposition. "That's what I said and that's what I meant," he added later, when asked if he would vote "no" on public health care.

At several other points, Specter did lay out areas in which he had "diverged materially from the Republican line," including raising the minimum wage, the stimulus package and abortion rights. But he went to great lengths to insist that he did not, as reported, tell Democratic leadership or the White House that he would be a loyal party member.

"I did not say," he told host David Gregory, "I would be a loyal Democrat. I did not say that."

Perhaps the strongest evidence of where Specter's sentiments currently lie came when he lamented the fact that, because the GOP lacked a Senate majority from 2006 through 2008, "34 Republican judges" were "left on the table unconfirmed."

"The [conservative] Club for Growth has undertaken campaigns to defeat moderate Republicans in the primaries knowing that they would lose in the general election. Take one case that was slightly different on procedure and that was Linc[oln] Chafee. The Club for Growth beat Linc Chafee, made him spend his money on the primary," Specter explained. "Had Linc Chaffee been elected in 2006, the Republican Party would have controlled the Senate in 2007 and 2008 and would have confirmed 34 Republican judges which were left on the table unconfirmed. I think that my colleague senator Olympia Snowe had it right in her New York Times op-ed piece, that you have to have a big tent."

As a PA Democrat.....I want a choice in the primary. I want a REAL Democrat in the Senate to serve next to Casey. I don't want Specter and I resent having him pushed down my throat. I am going to write to the Democratic Party, Ed Rendell and anyone else I can think of to express my views. If any of my same opinion are here....please write, too!!

You should address at least one of those letters to Harry Reid. http://theclosetconservative.com

This is hilarious. Americans United for Change (which is a union thug group), has just put out a press release: 'Specter decision to support the Employee Free Choice Act.' Ha, ha! I love it

You called that right. A Union Thug Group, sort of like ACCORN. It's hilarious that Senator Reid worked hard to get Specter on his side, adn may be experiencing buyers' remorse already. http://theclosetconservative.com

The only "Thugs" here, are all members of the rethug cabal and their base, who keep demonizing working Americans who demand fair-play. On your next weekend off, or when you're actually paid for overtime you've worked, thank a union member.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:43 AM on 05/04/2009

I'm not demonizing workers sir. I have serious issues with the union leadership. The auto workers are paid at an unsustainable rate, and even paid nearly full pay and benefits when they're laid off. Union pension funds have been getting raided by organized crime for years so frankly you should have some problems with your leadership too. http://theclosetconservative.com

I hate how the republicans and the media demonize the Unions.....you are so right to remind everyone that without unions there would be no weekends, no overtime pay....nothing but sweatshops.....

The unions give in, make concessions while those at the top get bonuses.....my husband works for the state of NJ. Hasn't had a raise and now will have 14 unpaid days....that really hurts. AND now they are talking about layoffs, too!! If their contracts can be broken, why do the big shots in the banks have immunity when it was THEIR choices that helped force this economic crisis down our throats!!

there is no such press release.

why the lie?

Uvymopka and theclosetconservative2? Do your really belive all the lies told to you in the GOP talking points which you appear to memorize every day (possibly receive the FAX daily along with the payment to post these lies on progressive web sites), or are you just another republican comedian practicing your stand up routine?

Don't we already have enough reactionary old geezers in the senate? I hope the President doesn't support him in the race and would love to see Joe lieberman turfed out in favour of a real democrat as well.

Legally, ones party affiliation is described as "a state of mind." Using that standard, does anyone really think that Ar is a democrat?

Exactly! I don't get the enthusiasm for Specter from Rendell and even our President who I love. I don't get it. Specter will not support anything we want, so why do we need him??
I want a real choice in the PA Democratic primary.......I want another Democratic Senator from our state, not another Liebermann!!

Does anyone really Obama said he would campaign and raise money for Spector, but as far as I can tell, Obama did not say he would do this during the primaries. Um. I wonder if Obama once again is smarter than the rest of us. If Spector doesn't play ball, there will be another democratic candidate.

I have YET to see one time where Obama was "smarter than the rest of us."

He is a Chicago politicain who has gotten away with things, this is true. But that doesn't make him "smarter", just slyer.

i'm independen but tend to suppor democrats especially after the bush era but I do hope that this time obama and his administration do not get their way to get senator specter re-elected in PA. i really hope that the people of PA do not get manipulated by politics coming from the WH to keep this man on his seat. he should lose big time to teach everyone that people are smarter now and better informed and this political moves do not work on us anymore.

If arlen fails to support President Obama on healthcare reform, or especially if he votes to block the vote, I'm sure our President will reconsider supporting specter.

he should NEVER have involved himself in a open primary.

it was stupid.

Dear Arlen, we don't want you! Stay a Republican and continue your 18th century idealogies. You're useless and worn out and if the Repubs don't want you, why should the Democrats?

See? You fail to understand. The Republicans don't want him either. Senator Specter is loyal to no one but himself. He proved that years ago when he changed from Dem to Rep. He proved it again by doing the reverse. He is facing a very tough battle for re-election as a Republican so he runs from that fight in an effort for a better position as a Democrat for re-election. Specter is out for no one but himself. Maybe he should just be an independent and caucus with himself.

this isnt about whether Speter should lose a Dem primary, its about the Obama WH clearing the field so you wont have a choice.

Thats the key to the Specter problem. From what Ive seen here, very few understand that Obamas pledge to Specter is the big problem here.

Everyone says there hould be a dem challenger to Specter. That wont happen unless Dems kick up a fuss and aim it at the Obama WH.

Joe is dying to run, everyone hasknown since 2006 that its always been the plan to run against Specter.

But no dem can buck a governor, the DNC ,the WH and a President.

Rendell we can handle Obama e cant.

Simply, if obama really raises money and does events for Specter, Joe can't and wont run.

We can easily beat Specter in the primary, but we can never beat Obama and the pressure of a WH endorsement.

if Obama publicly raises money and campaigns for Specter - no Democrat can run a real race. No way, no how.

We are ready to elect a great new Dem from PA. (Sestak has already raised $4 mill for this race, which is more than Specter) The question is will the Obama WH let us do this.

There is no way any vable Dem can run if Obama backs Specter.

If you care about electing a great Dem from PA, tell them at whitehouse.gov that you want an Open Primary and for the President to stay neutral.

The President did not and cannot "clear the field for Specter,.,. He did say he would campaign for him. So your remarks are not based in facts.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:34 AM on 05/04/2009

Presidents NEVER get involved in open primaries .

This is because their power to punish and reward will unfairly make it impossible for any of the political/fundraising / local office holder community to back another choice.

The risk and burden is too heavy.

Ive never hard of a President doing this before EVER.

These are the facts.

Well, now you no how we conservatives felt about Arlen and many of the postions he took. The democrats in their eagerness to attain a 60 seat majority have taken in a guy who cannot be counted upon to vote with the majority all the time. He's your problem now. What wonderful irony.
