I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Democrats eager to see what kind of Senator Arlen Specter would be now that he has left the Republican Party likely weren't counting their blessings after watching his appearance on "Meet the Press" this Sunday.

The Pennsylvanian, while insisting that his switch in party affiliation was driven as much by values as politics, nevertheless came out forcefully against two of progressives' most cherished policies.

On the Employee Free Choice Act, which would allow for easier unionization, Specter strongly suggested -- as he did during the speech announcing his party switch -- that he would support a filibuster of the legislation. "I'm still against that bill," he said. "Democrats are all for it. Republicans are all against it. I'm the critical vote. If I see that there are other issues where I feel a matter of conscience, I will continue a filibuster against legislation."

On a public option for health insurance -- which conservatives claim will end the private market, but most observers say could bring down the costs of coverage for millions of Americans -- Specter said he would be in opposition. "That's what I said and that's what I meant," he added later, when asked if he would vote "no" on public health care.

At several other points, Specter did lay out areas in which he had "diverged materially from the Republican line," including raising the minimum wage, the stimulus package and abortion rights. But he went to great lengths to insist that he did not, as reported, tell Democratic leadership or the White House that he would be a loyal party member.

"I did not say," he told host David Gregory, "I would be a loyal Democrat. I did not say that."

Perhaps the strongest evidence of where Specter's sentiments currently lie came when he lamented the fact that, because the GOP lacked a Senate majority from 2006 through 2008, "34 Republican judges" were "left on the table unconfirmed."

"The [conservative] Club for Growth has undertaken campaigns to defeat moderate Republicans in the primaries knowing that they would lose in the general election. Take one case that was slightly different on procedure and that was Linc[oln] Chafee. The Club for Growth beat Linc Chafee, made him spend his money on the primary," Specter explained. "Had Linc Chaffee been elected in 2006, the Republican Party would have controlled the Senate in 2007 and 2008 and would have confirmed 34 Republican judges which were left on the table unconfirmed. I think that my colleague senator Olympia Snowe had it right in her New York Times op-ed piece, that you have to have a big tent."

“Democrats eager to see what kind of Senator Arlen Specter would be now that he has left the Republican Party likely weren't counting their blessings after watching his appearance on "Meet the Press" this Sunday.”>>>>>>>>>>>>I am one Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) Democrat who wasn’t counting any blessings before Specter’s MTP appearance! I’m a loyal Democrat but I won’t vote for Arlen Specter! What is my Party thinking - OR NOT?!

Pennsylvania doesn’t have an open Primary system so many Democrats might go back and register Republican to vote for the well liked Ridge in the Primary race against Pat Toomey. If Ridge wins the Republican primary and stays classy and away from the Club for Growth nuts; it will be difficult for Specter to beat him in a general election.

Although, Joe Sestak won’t have any party backing and it will be difficult for him to win a Primary. But if he runs; he’ll get my vote.

His switch only gives him the ability to win a primary, he's toast in the general election, especially if Tom Ridge runs.

You are exactly right...Tom Ridge will crush him and most other Democrats. I think if Ridge runs, Rendell should run...it's our only chance.

Why is everyone complaining? The Democratic Party wanted Sen. Specter and worked to get him. Maj. Ldr. Reid allowed him to keep his seniority and promised him a chairmanship. Then, Pres. Obama promised to campaign for him in the next election. You now will have the magic 60 when Sen. Elec. Franken is seated. You have it all. Why are you bitching.

It's called critical thinking , not bitching....

We don't have to accept everything on its face value - something is up, and we have the right to monitor the situation...

" ... -something is up, and we have the right to monitor the situation..."

Don't you trust Pres. Obama and the Democratic Leadership?
And, of course you have the right to monitor things. The general tenor of this topic appeares to be more of a bitching session. than an investigative action - it's probably just me.

Off Topic, not snarky, pure question - Are you the Dr. Wood of guitar fame?

Not everyone was thrilled with the switch. And, unlike Republicans, Democrats don't feel the need to march in lock-step with their leadership when we feel the leadership is wrong, even when it's Obama! You republicans, obviously, will back your elected officials even when they are patently WRONG, so why are you bitching?

I'm not bitching. For me, it's a ROTFLMAO moment.

the magic 60 is an illusion.

plus we Pa Dems want the right to select our own Senator.

I totally agree with you on both statements. I think the Democratic Leadership in the quest for the former, trampled your right to the latter.

Nor can president Obama promise Specter he will retain his senate seat in 2010 if he doesn't step in line behind his agendas .

Just had a thought, and if someone else has posted it - I appologize... but, how about if there is a deal in place that he "retires" before any major votes thus giving Gov. Rendell cover for nominating a a Dem. Seantor replacement???

I know it sounds odd, but what if?? How about if he knows he will never vote on these issues..... things to make u go hmmmmm

It sounds like a brilliant idea, but health care is supposed to go up for a vote this year. However, I do believe there is plan in place for his stay to be short-lived. And if it's anything close to what you are suggesting, I think most Democrats will be grateful for the favor, maybe, LOL!

The whole point of belonging to a political party is because, on the whole, one supports the party platform.

Calling oneself a 'loyal democrat' has nothing to do with voting yea on every dem bill proposed, but it does have everything to do with supporting bringing dem platform proposals to an up or down vote.

A dark, ominous Spectre hangs over the Democratic party, or is it Specter one can't tell the difference. I believe that his health has clouded his mind and his rationality in matters political and economic suffer as a result. Gen MacArthur said "old soldiers never die, they just fade away". It could be said of old politicians as well.

It's just too bad how much damage the politicians can do to other people while they're fading.

Well then Sen. Spector, it will not matter who campaigns for you, even the President, you will be voted out of office for someone who will be a loyal Democrat, especially on such important core issues.

You have your blue dog Democrats. Arlen Specter is more of your old-dog-can't-learn-new-tricks Democrat.

This is not like quitting smoking. Anyone who backstopped Richard Nixon can put a dress on and wear the trendy bling, but that doesn't make him Paris Hilton.

Wow, what a jerk. I hope a real democrat with actual values runs him off in the next democratic primary. Republicans are clueless. They think the party name is the only reason democrats are winning. Voters aren't as stupid as they used to be and his record is going to deter progressives from voting for him.

His ideas are stupid, no matter what party he's affiliated with.

He should be paid back by us, the voters, who vote him out of office come re-election time. And I don't care if the new person is a Republican, after 4 years that person will be gone again, too.
We need to get away from them getting too comfortable in their positions. They change parties to further their career, but they don't change.

Loyal Democrat? Hah! I don't know how he can say he is a Democrat at all. He's no better than ...than...Ben Nelson!! And that's nothing to tear your shirt about. Arlen Specter will be problematic for the Dems, no matter what he does, both in advancing the agenda, and throwing a monkey wrench in the next election. I really wish Obama had said, "thanks, but no thanks." It makes me wonder exactly how committed the administration is to workers and working class citizens in this country.

In that case Senator Specter, since your loyalities are less than zero, you should have remained a Republican. I doubt very seriously if President Obama needs another faux democrat in his cabinet.

When Republicans threw their support behind Joe Lieberman against Ned Lamont, they knew what they were getting; a liberal Democrat who was nearly as far to the right on national defense as any Republican. The Democrats got Senator Specter on their side only to experience the types of deviations from him on a couple of sacred cows of Obama's program like the Employee No-Choice Act.. The Democrats have all but assured their success in stealing the Minnesota Senate race, only to inherit the one Republican Senator that Republicans don't want. Good riddance Senator Specter. We may lose with Pat Toomey, but it's still a battle worth fighting. http://theclosetconservative.com
