I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Democrats eager to see what kind of Senator Arlen Specter would be now that he has left the Republican Party likely weren't counting their blessings after watching his appearance on "Meet the Press" this Sunday.

The Pennsylvanian, while insisting that his switch in party affiliation was driven as much by values as politics, nevertheless came out forcefully against two of progressives' most cherished policies.

On the Employee Free Choice Act, which would allow for easier unionization, Specter strongly suggested -- as he did during the speech announcing his party switch -- that he would support a filibuster of the legislation. "I'm still against that bill," he said. "Democrats are all for it. Republicans are all against it. I'm the critical vote. If I see that there are other issues where I feel a matter of conscience, I will continue a filibuster against legislation."

On a public option for health insurance -- which conservatives claim will end the private market, but most observers say could bring down the costs of coverage for millions of Americans -- Specter said he would be in opposition. "That's what I said and that's what I meant," he added later, when asked if he would vote "no" on public health care.

At several other points, Specter did lay out areas in which he had "diverged materially from the Republican line," including raising the minimum wage, the stimulus package and abortion rights. But he went to great lengths to insist that he did not, as reported, tell Democratic leadership or the White House that he would be a loyal party member.

"I did not say," he told host David Gregory, "I would be a loyal Democrat. I did not say that."

Perhaps the strongest evidence of where Specter's sentiments currently lie came when he lamented the fact that, because the GOP lacked a Senate majority from 2006 through 2008, "34 Republican judges" were "left on the table unconfirmed."

"The [conservative] Club for Growth has undertaken campaigns to defeat moderate Republicans in the primaries knowing that they would lose in the general election. Take one case that was slightly different on procedure and that was Linc[oln] Chafee. The Club for Growth beat Linc Chafee, made him spend his money on the primary," Specter explained. "Had Linc Chaffee been elected in 2006, the Republican Party would have controlled the Senate in 2007 and 2008 and would have confirmed 34 Republican judges which were left on the table unconfirmed. I think that my colleague senator Olympia Snowe had it right in her New York Times op-ed piece, that you have to have a big tent."

I never suffered a moment's delusion that Specter would be anything other than a self-serving opportunist. His very statement "I never said I would be a loyal democrat", is the very reason why he should have become an Independent -- if in fact he was acting on principle by leaving the republican party. Specter knew he couldn't win as an independent so he chose the path that would serve him best.

Whatever votes he will cast as a "disloyal democrat", he would have cast as a republican. Presumably that's the principle Specter speaks to, but I just fail to see that as principled. The aura of opportunism glows far brighter around him.

Should these Democrats be challenged as well? They don't support the President's agenda.

Evan Bayh (Ind.), Mark Pryor (Ark.), Blanche Lincoln (Ark.), Mary Landrieu (La.), Ben Nelson (Neb.), Jim Webb (Va.), Mark Warner (Va.).

...and should we replace the #! Blue Dog, Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton?

They didn't switch horses in midstream (just to get elected the next go round)

Sincerity counts

Then a lot of politicians need to step down, because I don't know many that are sincere.

BTW, this is not midstream, it is approaching the end of a term...it's unfortunate that politicians are looked down upon for doing what everyone in the workplace does, look for opportunities, seek longevity, and survive in an unforgiving rat race to stay at the top of their profession.

...and if that means switching from coke to pepsi, then so be it.

Joe will run and win. Too many unemployed union workers in Pa for Specter to get away with voting against Free Choice. Stick a fork in him. Joe will run.

The idea that loyalty has anything to do with it is why these parties, especially this two-party system, is not something codified in the Constitution, in so far as we recognize them today. It is a hindrance, this idea of party loyalty. It should be people, not Dems or Reps. Of course, this should go without saying. But the idea of a two-party system is like ending a race a couple of feet before the end, there will still be one winner, and it should be the best winner. Of course in this metaphoric race, only two runners have a chance, based on how flashy and good their running shoes are. The best no longer wins and that is a problem.

Folks! This is about the Obama WH clearing the field so you wont even have a primary or a chancee to even decide.

Obama's pledge to Specter is the big problem in presenting a challenge to Specter.

Everyone says there should be a Dem challenger, but understand this, that wont even happen unless Dems kick up a fuss and aim it at the Obama WH.

Simply, if Obama really raises money and does events for Specter, Joe can't and wont run.

We can easily beat Specter in the primary, but we can never beat Obama and the pressure of a WH endorsement. No way, no how.

We are ready to elect a great new Dem from PA. (Sestak has already raised $4 mill for this race, which is more than Specter) The question is will the Obama WH let us do this.

There is no way any viable Dem can run if Obama backs Specter.

If you care about electing a great new Dem from PA, tell them at whitehouse.gov that you want an Open Primary and for the President to stay neutral..

I remember thinking the same thing when every Democrat in PA threw their full support behind the Clinton machine except Bob Casey. I was disillusioned with PA politics then, because no one gave President Obama a chance. He wasn't even considered, all across the state it was Hillary or nothing.

This reminds me of that.

Do you really think Obama welcomed Specter without some promise from him in return? Let's just wait and see....

This should come as no surprise. He is still a Republican tried and true. He has changed parties hoping to be re-elected. He's attempting to save his political career but is fooling no one. He should say "Bye-bye" now for he is done.

Sure, he'll be a Democrat, but the super-rich are still too poor for Arlen Specter's taste. It's a matter of "conscience" to him.

Specter OBVIOUSLY is lacking in ethics. I, too, will send money to any Dem who runs against him in the Primary. We need a REAL democrat in office, not fake ones just trying to make politics a lifetime gravy train!

Then there needs to be an independent effort. Joe Sestak seems like a viable candidate. I don't live in Pennsylvania but will contribute to an alternative to Specter.
