I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Democrats eager to see what kind of Senator Arlen Specter would be now that he has left the Republican Party likely weren't counting their blessings after watching his appearance on "Meet the Press" this Sunday.

The Pennsylvanian, while insisting that his switch in party affiliation was driven as much by values as politics, nevertheless came out forcefully against two of progressives' most cherished policies.

On the Employee Free Choice Act, which would allow for easier unionization, Specter strongly suggested -- as he did during the speech announcing his party switch -- that he would support a filibuster of the legislation. "I'm still against that bill," he said. "Democrats are all for it. Republicans are all against it. I'm the critical vote. If I see that there are other issues where I feel a matter of conscience, I will continue a filibuster against legislation."

On a public option for health insurance -- which conservatives claim will end the private market, but most observers say could bring down the costs of coverage for millions of Americans -- Specter said he would be in opposition. "That's what I said and that's what I meant," he added later, when asked if he would vote "no" on public health care.

At several other points, Specter did lay out areas in which he had "diverged materially from the Republican line," including raising the minimum wage, the stimulus package and abortion rights. But he went to great lengths to insist that he did not, as reported, tell Democratic leadership or the White House that he would be a loyal party member.

"I did not say," he told host David Gregory, "I would be a loyal Democrat. I did not say that."

Perhaps the strongest evidence of where Specter's sentiments currently lie came when he lamented the fact that, because the GOP lacked a Senate majority from 2006 through 2008, "34 Republican judges" were "left on the table unconfirmed."

"The [conservative] Club for Growth has undertaken campaigns to defeat moderate Republicans in the primaries knowing that they would lose in the general election. Take one case that was slightly different on procedure and that was Linc[oln] Chafee. The Club for Growth beat Linc Chafee, made him spend his money on the primary," Specter explained. "Had Linc Chaffee been elected in 2006, the Republican Party would have controlled the Senate in 2007 and 2008 and would have confirmed 34 Republican judges which were left on the table unconfirmed. I think that my colleague senator Olympia Snowe had it right in her New York Times op-ed piece, that you have to have a big tent."

Arlen Specter deserves to be put out to pasture with the other republican rejects

Do you get paid to push for Sestak? Why not Alyson Schwartz?

Could this actually be an independent thinker?

If so he's a goner!

Has Specter even been loyal to anyone but himself?

First, Democrats are not in lock step with each other about what they vote for, that would be another political group (no, I wasn't thinking of fascists).

Second, we never promised you that you would win the primaries. It seems to me that your state Democratic party can and has done better. Your big sales appeal is instant committee power, which your state was getting ready to lose to get rid of you. I expect you to lose the primaries and then turn around and return to the Republican party.

For the record, all politicians are opportunists, ALL OF THEM, including our amazing President...SO WHAT? People can either let sh*t happen to them, or they can make sh*t happen. I have no problem with Specter making this move, it doesn't mean I'll vote for him. I'll have to wait and see who the candidates are as the election draws near. Tom Ridge may be the Republican candidate, and he will gain a lot of support.

I heard this guy on Meet the Press.
Funny how he is 100% in favour of taking care of his own royal a-z-z...
How's HIS healthcare???
Gee...he'll even switch parties to make sure he's kept cozy and comfortable.
He is the exact problem with Washington...slow...behind-the-times...old ideas!
I hope he gets replaced...
And I don't care who does it because Specter is useless to Americans.

I think at his advanced age, Specter probably should retire at the end of his term. If elected, he will be 86 at the end of his next term and has had major helath issues over the past five years. I agree that the Republicans pushed him out of the party by forcing a tough primary against a right winger.

As we all know the primary voter in both parties are the hardliner base. Specter would prbably have lost since he cannot raise funds like he used to. I am concerned that the Dems gave up too much to get Specter to join the caucus especially since he can't be counted on for the major policy issues that will be up during the year including EFCA, Health Care, Energy, Supreme Court justice nominees.

We will probably never know what was said behind close doors, but I see no reason that we as Dems should sit idly by and let Specter run unopposed in the primary. We have a very strong slate of potential Senators who can lead PA for decades including Sestak and Murphy. This back room dealing is one of many reasons I would never enter politics, that and my weed farm (just kidding), but not about dirty politics.

"I did not say," he told host David Gregory, "I would be a loyal Democrat. I did not say that."

Of course not and who would expect this waffling old man to be a loyal anything. His past speaks for itself. His past votes speak for themselves. Why are the democrats so thrilled to get this opportunity to garner an opportunist? He will join the group of Bludog Dems who sabotage every measure in the interests of working America, or should I say jobless America masquerading as Democrats when they are right-wingers, true and blue.
One thing they all have in common - they will do ANYTHING to keep their seats and all the goodies that go with them. The Constitution, health care, poverty - come off it, let's get serious. They know where the money comes from!

The GOP (& the corporate masters who control Obama&theDemocrats) will get who they want: Arlen Specter's defection, along with Rule IV of the Senate Judiciary Committee guaranteed it. Here's how and why:

Obama's nominee first goes to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Every Democrat on the committee could vote to send the nominee's name to the floor of the Senate for an up-or-down vote, but if the nominee doesn't get at least one vote from the Republicans, the nomination never gets out of committee.

Rule IV: BRINGING A MATTER TO A VOTE

The Chairman shall entertain a non-debatable motion to bring a matter before the Committee to a vote. If there is objection to bring the matter to a vote without further debate, a roll call vote of the Committee shall be taken, and debate shall be terminated if the motion to bring the matter to a vote without further debate passes with ten votes in the affirmative, one of which must be cast by the minority.

http://judiciary.senate.gov/about/committee-rules.cfm

Specter was the most moderate Republican on the committee. The remaining Republicans on the committee are Orrin Hatch, Chuck Grassley, Jon Kyl, Jeff Sessions, Lindsey Graham, John Cornyn, & Tom Coburn.

How extraordinary that the day before David Souter announces he's leaving, Specter switches parties.

The fix is in and the next justice to be named to the US Supreme Court is not going to be a liberal. Or anyone close.

I predict obama will nominate Sarah Palin for the Supreme Court and then he wont have to run against her in 2012.

Don't underestimate the dems. Spectre is being used . The dems need some important bills that need passing and they need all the support. Once healthcare, immigration etc are passed, spectre will be dumped. You wait and see.

I think you've got it backwards.

Specter is using the Democratic Party for his own selfish ends.

Fortunately, it seems that the voters are picking up on that situation far ahead of the pols in DC.
