It's that time of year when garden centers are full, and you just can't seem to squeeze enough hours out of the day to get your yard done. With budgets tightening, many folks are considering growing food instead of just pretty flowers. But fear not - just because a plant is edible, it doesn't have to be ugly. Some people in our neighbourhood already have a good start on this. At one house the arbour over the front sidewalk is used for scarlet runner beans instead of climbing roses or ivy. Another house had beans and peas running up the chainlink fence. Another has parsley and other herbs to set off the flowers on the front border. My favourite, though, was the border along the front walk and driveway planted to zucchini and cucumbers.

I've got herbs in the flower garden and a raspberry patch and apple tree in the back yard, plus a saskatoon bush which has failed to thrive for some reason.
