Chelsea Green:

You've heard the rumors that cell phones cause cancer. You've seen those folks on the street holding their cell phones away from their head as though their phone's cancer is contagious. But where did these rumors get started? Are they based in any fact? If there is truth to the myth, will electromagnetic fields be the next battle in the war on pollution? Will we be talking about electro-friendly devices in the future the way we talk about carbon-friendly products now?

The dizziness after using cellphone after long conversation might speaks about how the radiation affectting our brain.

Or it will tell you something about the quality of your conversation.

There is, by the way, an easy fix... if you are afraid of the EM radiation. it's called a wired head set. $4.99 at Walmart.

:-)

I am wary about this, however, I think it must be said that older cell phones - especially those huge ones in use in the beginning - likely did a much poorer job of shielding the user. I talked to a company that sells EM measuring devices, and they told me that they're measuring greatly reduced radiation with the modern ones. Any risks should be studied, but it will be hard keep the cell phone companies and a government that protects industry first and foremost from being obstructionist if anything is found (notice that environmental and animal activists are ridiculously called the "number one" domestic "terrorist" threat by government - it's because they pose a threat to industry and nothing more - government is hand in hand with industry).

Tidbits from the last update to the Telecommunications Act. Sponsored by Joe Lieberman

The act bans the FDA and the National Institute of Health from studying or regulating the health effects of cell phone use.

The law also bans all health related law suits against wireless companies. The ban on law suits is a rewrite of (they added a few lines) an old law that prevented law suits if a utility pole fell on someone.

The wireless companies must study health effects but they are not required to define their studies ahead of time or publish results they don't like. This is the same research tactic that the tobacco companies used for half a century. The IEEE is responsible for review of all studies .... that's right , electrical engineers.

PS. Have you noticed all those new towers in your neighborhood ... here is the reason ... more towers means less power required from your head set. Wireless companies know they have a big problem down the road and health issues from tower radiation are much harder to prove.

I haven't heard rumors but I have seen reports on tv and on NPR.
I have to assume that the threat is real...microwave radiation just like your microwave
in your kitchen.

I use mine sparingly.

Even if you aren't concerned, everyone should be concerned with ..

IDIOTS WHO DRIVE WHILE TALKING ON THEIR CELL PHONES....

PRETTY SOON WE WILL BE RECORDING DEATHS FROM THIS IDIOCY.

Ms. Green, if you cite scientific evidence, please cite it properly: author, journal, publication date, page number. The works. Why do journalists and bloggers still think they can get away with lower standards than ordinary high school students?

Because they don't have PhD or even B.S., EE or J.D training, typically, I think. Even an MBA would help with their credibility in writing if they learned something while there about what's defensible work.
