Mine That Bird was proclaimed ready for the Preakness on Monday after a spirited early morning jog, while his trainer remained groggy from two nights of little sleep after a startling Kentucky Derby victory.

"The horse will be the judge, but as good as he looked this morning, we plan on being at the Preakness," Bennie Woolley Jr. said.

Although Woolley has tried to make sure the horse's routine has remained normal since the 50-1 shot's win Saturday under Calvin Borel, it has been a far from normal period for the trainer in the black cowboy hat.

Woolley estimates he has totaled five hours of sleep in two nights. Every time he has tried to doze off, there seemed to be another interview request, visitors at the barn or time for Mine That Bird to be walked or fed.

Woolley said the horse will remain at Churchill Downs in Louisville at least until May 12 before shipping to Baltimore. He jogged a mile at Churchill on Monday morning and will have light jogs each of the next two days.

Woolley said there are no plans for the horse to have a full workout before the Preakness.

"I've never been to Baltimore, but it looks like I won't be able to say that in a few days," he said.

A Preakness trip wasn't looking quite as likely on Sunday. Woolley said then there's "no obligation" to go to the Preakness and added: "You've got to do what's best for the horse and the horse has got to come first."

Woolley said he still feels no obligation but acknowledged horse racing can always use a shot at the Triple Crown _ something not accomplished since Affirmed in 1978. Should he win the Preakness, Mine That Bird must also take the June 6 Belmont to do that.

"The horse came back and he's bouncing _ feels good, doing good," Woolley said. "This Triple Crown thing is good for racing. If you don't have the Kentucky Derby winner, there's no Triple Crown."

Borel expressed confidence this could be the horse to do it, long shot or not. Mine That Bird won the Derby by 6 3/4-lengths _ the largest since Assault in 1946. Borel said he'll be more than happy to take a shot at history.

"He's plenty of horse," Borel said.

Co-owner Leonard Blach, a veterinarian, said he observed nothing in the horse Monday that would keep him out of the second leg in two weeks.

"We never ruled the Preakness out," Blach said. "This horse had to let us know. We had to make sure he's doing good. We're not going to do anything to hurt this horse and this horse has to tell us he's all right. We got the best vets and trainer, and I know a few things about horses. The way he tracked today, looks like he's going."

The last Derby winner to skip the Preakness was an injured Grindstone _ Mine That Bird's grandsire _ in 1996. The last healthy Derby winner to miss it was Spend A Buck in 1985.

Other Derby horses expected to take on Mine That Bird in Baltimore are fourth-place finisher Papa Clem and possibly runner up Pioneerof the Nile, third-place Musket Man, Join in the Dance (seventh) and General Quarters (10th).

David Fawkes, trainer for Delta Jackpot winner Big Drama, said he also would be joining Mine That Bird at Pimlico. Withers winner Mr. Fantasy, Take the Points and Miner's Escape also are possible.

"We are ready to roll," Fawkes said. "He is the kind of horse where you can put him anywhere you want. He can sit off the lead and he has a huge turn of foot. When you push the gas pedal, he goes."

Woolley was surprised by Mine That Bird's Derby victory, and he says he doesn't expect him to be the top choice for the Preakness either, considering the field.

"He's not going to just jump up and be the favorite off one win," Woolley said. "But I'll bet he's not 50-1."

The Preakness is a different race altogether, which calls for speed. The Belmont better suits his strengths.

I have this intuition that says that something is wrong here. I watched that horse come from the rear of the pack, to win by lengths. I would hope that no one gave him steroids or other meds. I am just thankful no horse got injured or killed this year. I am still furious at the number of horses allowed in the race. When there's that many, there is a good chance someone will get hurt.

Ah, come on. The favorite horse rarely wins the Kentucky Derby because of the size of the field. (And I agree that it should be smaller.) Also, the track was sloppy, the favorite slipped coming out of the gate and Calvin Borel rode a perfect race.

I'll bet the owner is kicking himself for having the horse gelded. What if he wins the Triple Crown? What will they do, clone him?

They can't clone him, but his sire and dam are still alive and breeding.

I loved the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. Seems like a decent enough sport. There is no real repair for a horses broken leg.

Rethugs aren't the only ones rewriting history. Unbridled won the Derby by more than 6 1/2 lenths.

Not bad for a $400,000 horse (and a$9,500 yearling)-beat the pants off of a $20 million-dollar horse.

Let's hope the "Prince" has more money than sense and enters the Preakness, so Mine That Bird can spank him again!

I'm sorry but I can't help thinking that something is up here. The bag-man in the biggest and most wide spread bribery scandal in Alaskan history winds up getting off scot -free because his father who supplied the cash turns states evidence and as part of the deal for his testimony against the Senator involved in the scandal gets a free pass for his son. Without this little bit of legal maneuvering the son, Michael Allen, would have been out of horse racing and not allowed to participate at any level. Now we have a horse who hasn't won a race in a year coming from behind to take one of the biggest races in the sport at 53 to 1 by nearly 6 lengths. Not any possibility that this was a fix is there--NONE!!! Not with his reputation and that of his father. They would never fix anything!!!

That's my opinion also. I hope they check out that horse before the Preakness. I don't want to see him break down and have to be destroyed. Something just isn't right.

Yeah, right. To fix the Kentucky Derby, you'd have to bribe at least five jockeys to risk their careers and throw the race. Considering that jockeys win a percentage of the purse if their horse runs in the money, bribing a few would cost a pretty penny with no guarantee that your horse would win because there are fourteen other jockeys trying to win. Of course, this might be worth it if the horse was a stallion with a career as a stud in his future, but Mind That Bird is a gelding. He's never going to be worth more than he is now. Besides, it's not like this horse is a slouch. To qualify for the Kentucky Derby, a colt must be one of the three-year olds who've earned the most money in graded stakes.

Apologies to all you horse racing aficionados out there, but I need to lodge a brief rant here. "Mine That Bird" is not a name for a living animal. It's not even a particularly good name for a boat.

Now, I'm not a PETA person. I eat meat. But there is something that just rubs me wrong about horse racing. This is something about horse racing that really bugs me. The names speak volumes about the way the owners view the horses - frankly, as extensions of their own ego, artifices of flesh who exist only to win. Oh I know, you don't know the racing world, the owners love their horses. Uhhuh. Right up until the moment they break their legs and get put down.

He was named after his parents, Birdstone and Mining My Own (daughter of Smart Strike and granddaughter of Mr. Prospector).

Run a few races, then retire to stud. What a crappy life!

No stud action for this horse, he's a gelding. Whoever lopped off his cahones should be put out to pasture.

And his grandsire was Grindstone, another Kentucky Derby winner.
