Science Teacher

You're young, you're impressionable, you need guidance and you hate science class. Where do you turn? Geoff Moore and the Distance, the Christian Rock band that gave us such hit albums as "A Friend Like U" and "Ev-O-Lu-Tion." Geoff loves the lord and hates evolution and made a rock video many years ago to spread the gospel of gospels. It's pretty awesome, what with the 90s "special" effects and anti-science rhetoric.

The video starts with a biology teacher saying, "Darwin first did the imminent service of arousing attention to the probability of all change in organic, as well as in the inorganic world, being the result of law, and not of miraculous interposition." Moron. (We see he is a moron cause of his annoying voice and lack of hotness.) It follows a young woman in the class and her magical textbook that holds singing Christians. They tell her that, "It takes a lot of faith to say we're accidents of nature, but I believe we are the work of a loving Creator." (Via Videogum)

The music stinks...

Why does "Christian" music have to suck so bad almost all the time? Amy Grant was OK and Rebecca St. James is tolerable, but just about every other track laid down by a "Christian" band sucks. You'd think
that God could have given these people that want to "spread his message" at least the same amount of talent that he gave a monkey, wouldn't you?

Seawind was pretty good, if you're into pop/jazz fusion with an occasional burst of proselytizin'.

I was a big fan of the Imperials, but am sorry to see that my two favorite albums are decried on their website as being too hard rock, and off message (This Year's Model & Free The Fire).

I saw Geoff Moore in the early 90s, and really enjoyed his show. He didn't do this song, I don't think it was a big one for him, but singers and groups you enjoy can do songs you don't like or agree with. Seems to me someone spent a lot of time digging this one up.

And Christian music is just like any other, there's good and there's bad. If you judge purely on musical content, I think you could find plenty that you would like. I quit listening to Christian radio because of the content between the songs, which about 15 years ago, started getting way over the top and insulting to left leaning Christians like myself.

Fundamentalists' fierce opposition to evolution - an indispensable aspect of modern biology - appears to be making them increasingly dependent on non-Fundamentalists, including Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and Atheist physicians, for their medical care. http://chronicle.uchicago.edu/050714/doctorsfaith.shtml.
Also, consider this: Is Fundamentalist opposition to evolution a factor in the disturbing decline in health and life expectancy in the so-called "Bible Belt" areas of the United States since the 1980's? http://longevity.about.com/od/longevitystatsandnumbers/a/le_declines.htm

Health problems in the Bible Belt are mainly due to obesity.

It is encouraging to read that adults are turning away from religion. Perhaps they simply grew tired of being mis-informed?

This video doesn't work to prove any point for or against evolution. People who want to debunk evolution should probably have some grasp of its concepts before they go attempting that feat. When I have to actually work to refute an anti-evolutionary claim, that's when I know that those people are actually thinking before running off at the mouth.

People who cannot reconcile their faith with evolution should at least know what they're talking about. Otherwise you end up with senseless drivel. Before an evolutionary debate sparks on this page, I would like to stress that it be one of thoughtfulness, not of pettiness.

"People who cannot reconcile their faith with evolution should at least know what they're talking about." This works both ways.

So... people that talk about science should have an endless knowledge of Christianity?

OK, next time I'm stuck on a problem at work I won't look at scientific evidence, I'll just read some irrelevant nonsense written thousands of years ago. I'm sure that'll help. Just be ready for the fallout when a nuclear waste vitrification plant is woven from reeds I found by the river.

Who's to say that there isn't room for both? Einstein stated in his book ' Out of my later years' that " Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind. " .

There ISN'T room for both. If you approach things in a logical and reasonable manner, then there is no need for religion. Besides, Einstein said a lot of other things that were much more opposed to religion, such as, "...the idea of a Being who interferes with the sequence of events in the world is absolutely impossible."
