E-waste is the e-worst.

Proper disposal of old computers, TVs, iPods and the rest is really important in preventing nasty toxins from leaching into the earth here and in other countries.

So here's a great idea: when you replace an old laptop, find a new use for it. LAPTOP magazine suggests making minor changes to it so that it can be your new media center, playing DVDs and online videos (like from hulu or Netflix).

The market made it in such a way much easier and cheaper to buy new gadget, rather than recycle it.

To the couple of naysayers, the purpose wasn't to "upgrade" the laptop. It was to find a purpose for the laptop so it wouldn't find its way in to a garbage dump. This is the "green section." They did some minor upgrades to give it better performance, but 99 for 320GB HD is a hell of a lot better than 250 for 120gb ipod. I did somthing similar to my wifes laptop, and hooked it up to the LCD in the bedroom. It's fantastic, we use it to watch netflix all the time.

Don't worry, I won't trash my laptop -- I'll give it to my nephew to use. He's only 11 years ago. How's that for recycling? :-)

Please recycle that Dell Steve :)
Get a laptop with NTSC outputs on it and you can watch World TV
with 2,000 channels a fast cable connection or fiber is needed.

I was sold on the idea until they showed it costs over $300 to upgrade the laptop. Doesn't that defeat the purpose --- my old Dell laptop only has 196 mb RAM, so in the trash it goes.

But it doesn't have to cost over $300. If you don't want the tiny wireless keyboard and can live with a full size wireless keyboard, you save about $130. If you have your router near the TV and don't need to upgrade the Wi-Fi card, that saves about $20. There are lots of ways to cut cost on this project; we just showed what you could do.

Your mileage and cost will vary depending on what type of notebook you are upgrading.and what parts you feel like you need.

So they buy new memory, a new hard disk, an a new keyboard and still wind up with a video card that 'well we'll just have to live with it' and other components designed for light weight rather than driving a video display

Salvage sell the VAIO and then get an ITX Motherboard with Atom Processor for around 65 dollars online. Then for the price of the laptop hard disk and memory you could get a terrabyte SATA2 drive and two gigs of PC6400 memory and a better video processor. Add a budget DVD player and a budget ITX case and you are way ahead of a repurposed laptop.
