Dad Computers

I'm pretty sure everyone under 35 will be able to relate to the first third of this video...then it gets kind of weird.

If your dad is anything like my dad he calls you several times a day asking you vague questions (he doesn't know the terminology to be more specific) about some vague computer problem/issue. Usually, it wasn't a problem to begin with, just a simple misunderstanding, but then he hit the enter button fifteen times hard or clicked on every icon available, or opened three hundred web browsers in frustration and made things worse and now you have to talk him through restarting the computer and doing a few other simple things that will take over an hour because he doesn't know what 'restart' means nor 'right click,' 'icon,' 'Microsoft,' 'Apple key,' or 'num lock.'

I think it's cute the way my father refers to everything on a computer as -- "the program."

It's so refreshing to see that ageism is still an acceptable prejudice.

Yes, I'm in my 40's, and do from time to time ask my teenage son about computer problems I'm having. But, guess what? So does every other teenage friend he has. He's always telling us about kids at school, sometimes even computer teachers!, asking him to help him out. He'll get calls at night from friends and be on the phone for hours talking them through problems.

I look forward to the day when I'm a grandfather, and see all the grandkids writing about how stupid their parents are.

My FAV is when someone asks me where is the "any" key? As in "I keep getting this message that says ''to continue, hit any key. I have looked and looked and maybe my keyboard is old cuz I can't seem to find the 'any key'' on it anywhere!"

Sounds like whoever wrote this uses Windows. Perhaps they should be asking someone *older* about how to use a computer. An old Unix geek, or a modern GNU/Linux geek could teach them a lot and then they wouldn't teach their poor fathers to use crappy proprietary operating systems and software.

nope it doesn't matter what operating system people use, our parents still won't get it.

& in the video there's clearly a mac in the background.

Hey... watch it...!

I'm 60 - and female. And I build computers, teach a variety of apps - and happen to dual boot Linux and Win - and I'd take a bet when I was on an Atari and C64 playing Elite you weren't even in diapers yet!

*NIX systems are for geeks and hackers, not for neophytes. i use linux CLI-based systems at work, and appreciate their utility (sed, grep, awk, vi etc etc) and stability, but for most people, windows or mac are much easier to use.
