Sen. Chris Dodd took some noticeably hard shots at the White House in a recent interview with Connecticut bloggers, ridiculing the Obama officials who decided to release documents showing the Bush administration authorized torture without having the political will to follow up with an investigation or prosecution.

"I don't know who the genius was in the room that night when they were discussing this," the Connecticut Democrat said of the four torture documents declassified by the Obama White House. "But if you are going to make the decision to release the documents, I presume every one of us here would the have a follow up question, which is: Well, what are you going to do about it? And if the answer is nothing, we are just going to release the documents.... Some of us in the room would say, 'Well wait a minute, you have a problem. If you are going to release them then you are going to have to answer the next question, what are you going to do with them?'"

Dodd said that he definitively believed waterboarding to be torture and added that if "people did do something illegal it ought to be pursued." He did not have a preferred avenue for pursuing investigations into the matter, though spoke somewhat favorably of Sen. Patrick Leahy's proposal for an independent body to handle the matter.

But it was his comments aimed at the president that were the most biting. Though Obama noted that his hands were tied when it came to the document release -- his White House had to comply with a Freedom of Information Act request from the ACLU -- the fact that the president remains un-eager to pursue potential illegal activity struck Dodd as antithetical to basic American principles.

"I know people don't want to go back, because it is uncomfortable. The president has said I want to look forward," he said. "You know my father was a prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials. They were not a popular idea.... Nuremberg became a symbol of who we were. Even these thugs got a lawyer, even these thugs got a trial despite their acts. And so we became a symbol of jurisprudence and the rule of law."

"Not to prosecute people or pursue them when these acts occur is, in a sense, to invite them again," Dodd concluded.

The remarks of the Connecticut Democrat, who finds himself in a tough reelection contest heading into 2010, undoubtedly appealed to the group of progressive bloggers whom he was addressing. Whether former Vice President Dick Cheney would be caught in the center of an investigation, Dodd replied: "You gotta go where you gotta go."

Torture prosecution requires the appointment of a Special Prosecutor to control the granting of immunity to witnesses by any Congressional Commission. We need to root out the truth but We Also Must Have Prosecution, or it will all hap[pen again in our lifetimes.

Plain and Simple, Senator Dodd was not involved some payoff/blackmail that the rest were so he can go asking for a full and independent investigation.

Don't underestimate Cheney and Rove

Its not like the current administration doesn't want to; they did release the documents without blacking out entire pages. There is more to the equation than we know, as always.

The oppressors shall once again be rewarded. John Yoo shall see some sweet TARP, Bybee continues to hold his position.

Do the math

I'm sorry. Why are we leaving it up to the White House to decide whether to put these men on trial or not? This issue should be brought to the Supreme Court. This is a federal matter and if Americans really want to see how biased or how compassionate the court is, then it should be brought before them. Enough with the politics. Let the judicial branch do what it does, deciphering the law, and let the executive branch worry about other things. These torture memos are the last things that Obama needs to be dealing with.

This the justice department's area and Obama has said he is leaving it up to them. Doesn't Dodd have some bills to gut somewhere instead of expecting others to do his job?

Nice job, Dodd. Investigating Bush is not a policy you consider after you check the polls. Going after him is a matter of principles and laws, not to mention it would not be the worst idea ensuring the crap Bush pulled never happens again. But more so, if Obama reasonably believes something illegal has occurred, isn't he obligated to investigate just by virtue of his general job description and the Geneva Convention? Or maybe just by virtue of common sense and conscience?

Obama is going to look ridiculous if he does nothing and if nations like Spain come after us anyway. I hope they do. I didn't vote for Obama assuming he would disregard such a blatant issue. It doesn't take a genius to be concerned about the possibility of broken laws, a discarded constitution, and war crimes.

Simple and true.

"Not to prosecute people or pursue them when these acts occur is, in a sense, to invite them again," Dodd concluded.

If you are against the investigation you are for the use of torture.

It is for the legislative branch to bring charges against the executive branch. Dodd is flogg ing some kind of campaign political advantage. That's all.

The legislative branch DOES bring charges against the executive branch.....that's what impeachment is all about. It does not necessarily mean it's done for political advantage in this case. Wrong is wrong.

Well, we can't impeach Bush now. We should have never let him take office in the first place, but we did. And looked what has happened. He squandered us. He squandered our United States.

Hey, Dodd...it was a real act of genius to lie about your invovlement in the bonus provisions in the porkulous bill. Lame attempt to redirect focus on your blatant dishonesty. "Change we can believe in!"

Yeah - we should just leave the past behind us. Instead, we should redirect our focus to more important matters, like prosecuting democrats for "dishonesty".

no matter what, no high elected official will even see a day in court personally charged over this......even if it gets close the force exerted on mrbo to pardon will be amazing

Can anyone tell me when any President had to deal with prosecuting anyone? It's just not in the job description. It would be a gross swing in the checks and balance system in America. That is why we have a Justice Dept. and a Congress. How can we condemn the Bush administration for politicizing the DOJ then demand that Obama force them to prosecute immediately? If Congress and Holder do what they are supposed to then those who ordered crimes will be held to account. If not then our system will have failed us.

The President is the leader of the executive branch which is responsible for the enforcement of our laws. If you actually read the "job description" (the Constitution), Article II, Section 1, Clause 1 states that "[the] Executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America." The "Executive Power" is generally understood to mean the enforcement of "the law as written by the legislature and interpreted by the judicial system." : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Executive_(government)

While the President does not act as a trial prosecutor, he is responsible for prosecution of federal crimes (which is why the busheviks were able to "get away with murder"). It would be irresponsible and unfair for him to come down on one side or the other before the trial takes place. But it would be equally irresponsible for him to suggest that these alleged crimes should not be prosecuted.

it surprises me the lack of understanding people have about how our system is supposed to work. I agree with you, Captain. Its the chief Law enforcement officer who should have these folks arrested. seeing as they have admitted to the crimes. Then let DOJ do it's job.

Don't believe Dodd!
We need to prosecute all those involved
and while we're at it, investigate Dodd,
his deals and his cronies.

True, but..i have found that when these people are embattled, like Dodd, or during election time is the ONLY time they tell the truth. When they dish dirt on each other. The praise is all meaningless rubbish. Notice Dodd took on the Credit Card companies and "got tough" after we caught him lying about the AIG bonus.

He is probably talking about Rahm would be my guess. Managing illusions.

I just hope we can investigate Chris Dodd's sweatheart deals with the banking industry that includes the documents on the illegal conflict of interest there. Maybe while we are at it we can investigate Murtha's no bid routing of defense money to his Nephew or Charlie Rangle's failure to pay taxes.
