I Like ItI Don’t Like It

The New York Times is raising its newsstand prices for the third time in less than two years as a severe advertising slump forces readers to shoulder more of the costs of producing newspapers.

With the latest changes announced Tuesday, individual copies of The New York Times on Mondays through Saturdays will have doubled to $2 since July 2007.

The upcoming increase, effective June 1, will boost the Times' weekday price by 50 cents, or 33 percent, from the current price of $1.50. The Times, which has the third-highest U.S. circulation on weekdays, increased the weekday price by 25 cents during each of the previous two summers.

The New York Times also is raising the price for its Sunday edition, which is the nation's top-selling newspaper on that day. Sunday's national and Northeast editions will cost $6, an increase of $1. In the New York area, it will cost $5, also a dollar more.

Home delivery rates aren't changing for now. That means most of the Times' readers won't be affected by the June 1 increases because home delivery accounts for nearly two-thirds of the newspaper's weekday circulation and more than 70 percent of the Sunday circulation.

But the Times isn't ruling out an increase later this year, newspaper spokeswoman Diane McNulty said. The Times had raised its home delivery prices around the same time it increased newsstand prices in 2007 and 2008.

Raising the prices of newspapers is risky because it threatens to drive away readers, particularly as the Times and most other newspapers give away their stories on the Internet. The recession also has made many consumers more frugal.

But many newspapers have shown willingness to see circulation fall as long as they keep the readers most coveted by advertisers.

Among other things, the Times and other newspapers have been cutting back on discounted and third-party sales. The thinking is that readers willing to pay higher prices could end up being more valuable to advertisers because they are presumably more affluent and more engaged with newspapers.

The average sales of 395 daily U.S. newspapers, including the Times, tracked by the Audit Bureau of Circulations fell 7.1 percent from last year during the six months ending in March, the biggest decline on record.

The New York Times' weekday circulation averaged 1.04 million during the six months ending in March, a drop of more than 3 percent from last year. Before the 2007 price increase, the Times' weekday circulation stood at 1.12 million.

Although many factors are behind the circulation drop, both USA Today, the nation's largest weekday newspaper, and The New York Post have blamed higher prices for recent declines in their circulation.

Despite the erosion, the circulation revenue of the Times and other newspapers is still higher that a year ago because the remaining readers are paying more. Higher prices helped lift the first-quarter circulation revenue at The New York Times Co. and McClatchy Co., which owns The Miami Herald and 29 other daily newspapers.

The flurry of price increases underscores just how much the shifting financial landscape has shaken newspaper publishers.

For decades, newspapers were able to rely on steady increases in their ad revenue to cover most of the cost for gathering the news, printing the information and then distributing the copies. A reliable flow of advertising is one reason the Times was able to go from 1999 to 2007 with just one increase in the cover price of its weekday edition.

But ad revenue has been crumbling throughout the newspaper industry for the past three years, forcing newspapers to lay off workers, reduce wages and look for new ways to make money.

So far the revenue gains from higher prices haven't been nearly enough to overcome the advertising drought.

The New York Times Co., which also owns The Boston Globe and 16 other daily newspapers besides its flagship publication, lost $74 million during the first three months of the year as its ad revenue plunged 27 percent from last year. Circulation revenue edged up by 1 percent.

With its newspaper prices rising and ad sales sagging, circulation accounted for 38 percent of the Times Co.'s first-quarter revenue. Most newspaper publishers still rely more heavily on advertising.

The advertising downturn has sent seven publishers with daily newspapers into bankruptcy protection since December and triggered the closure of the Rocky Mountain News in Denver.

The beginning of the end of the "Majors" in print media. The NYT will not make it.

The Sunday NYT is one of the great pleasures in life. There's nothing like sleeping in on Sundays and then reading the paper in bed with a steaming cup of coffee. The Sunday book review is superb and the best in the country; the magazine is phenomenal; and, the opinion pages on Sunday are amazing: Dowd, Friedman, Kristof, Rich all together.

That said - price increases are not sustainable. They really need to figure out a way to price their online content appropriately. They have a lot of high-quality material which they currently giving away for free.

Actually, there are lots of things better than sleeping in on Sundays and reading the paper in bed with steaming cup of coffee ( pardon the cliches).

And I don't have to pay $6 to make it possible.

This past Sunday we were in Austin. Got up at 7, joined a large number of people on the running paths as we strolled over to Jo's for coffee, again joining a long line. Paid less than $4 for the coffee, walked back out into the fresh air, found a bench overlooking the river. Turned on my iPhone, read the headlines at HuffPo, turned it off.
Now, when the NYT or the Austin Statesman can duplicate that ambiance, they may be on their way to economic recovery.

I agree with you about the need for them to price the online content properly. It makes no sense to just give it away.

The mainstream news, and newspapers, have turned so bias that no one reads them anywhere. The CEO of GE was questioned about that Garalfalo girl(I don't know if her name is spelled right)I Have only seen her once, about her Racist remarks about TEA PARTIES.He could do nothing because he is in bed with Obama to pass CAP and TRADE legislation, and must of sold out the news for only positive Obama stories. Now I see why no one watches MSNBC

A while ago the Times charged for premium online content and I was happy to pay to get it. The advertising revenue model proved to be a better source of revenue, so they stopped charging and gave me a refund. But the stuff they advertise is mostly very high end and has little interest for me. If they included their print ads in the online version I would certainly shop them. Now all the Times has to do is figure a way to make a premium from the adds I respond to. Shouldn't be too hard. And while they're at it they can save some trees.

Why are people so willing to accustom themselves to $4 a gallon gas (20 gals at a time) to get their lard asses to a bar, but are loathe to spend the money, say once a week, for a Sunday paper that gives them the world. Understand my use of hyperbolics here, and don't lambaste me for being such.

My point is that these papers are important. The Times; The Intelligencer; The Globe; etc., etc., etc..
Why are people in this country so myopic. Maybe we should help support these papers, and help them bridge the gap to where they come out the other side, whole.

Just sayin'!!

These papers used to be important but the fact remains they are behind the technological curve. I'm sure there were plenty of vellum manufacturers who gnashed their teeth when paper made an appearance.

Those media outlets that adapt will survive. Those that don't deserve to fail. That's capitalism, red in tooth and claw.

Three cheers for everyone who is "behind the technological curve." Technology is responsible for the dumbing down of American society. It will be decades before the Internet develops the ethics, responsibility and professionalism of today's newspapers. By then we will be in the Dark Ages, but with laptops.

I hardly call it "giving us the world". Yes, it is a good newspaper, but I'm not sure any newspaper in this world is worth close to $80 a month (close to $1,000 a year!) I bet even well-off upper east side New Yorkers would agree with that!

Yes, but I find a replacement for cheaper (esp. for the Times toilet paper is cheaper than newspaper)
I am constantly being bombarded by "the world" via the media through televison, internet, or radio, and its enough, honestly.

$6.00 , , , , because $5.00 doesn't pay the bills in NYC.

This is going to backfire. The idea that prices should be raised to make up for lost revenue during a recession only works for necessities...if people have to choose between todays pig flu rantings and a sandwich...

I haven't bought the Times since they jacked it up to over a dollar daily...I remember my Mom, living in Indiana, yelling at me for buying the Sunday national edition when it was 4 bucks:

"Why do you need to spend that for something you can read online? Don't waste your money..."

That was 5 years ago...you GO, Ma!!

These increases are not enough for their long term survival.

The NYT also has to address how to "price" their content on the Internet because this latest increase will merely drive more to reading the newspaper on line.

They may well be the only national paper to drive this change. To avoid dealing with pricing their content merely delays their demise. Sadly.

I pay for internet access. I pay for access to decent television product (meh.) I would pay for internet access to news articles, properly researched and written by quality writers.

Did you ever offer me that option? In a timely manner? No. Maybe it's time to get off your keisters and start figuring out where to pick up revenue. Legitimately.

Lower the prices of the print edition, it will be read by people who can't afford a PC. Print fewer, add lots of coupons. Maybe look into providing a "print as you go" service -- it's called technology, right?

Otherwise, find a way to live in today's world. Better note that lots of people aren't paying for cable these days -- entertainment we can find anywhere.

I won't miss the newspapers after they are gone. I would pay for a PDF subscription to read on my laptop or desktop, but static content is also an outdated medium. All those reporters out there have a chance to start their own site and offer content - hard hitting non biased information that they were unable to do under the control of the newspaper entities.

The paper age of news is a dying species, adapt or die...
