VATICAN CITY — Reviewers at the Vatican's newspaper have passed judgment on "Angels & Demons," finding the religious thriller commercial and inaccurate, but concluding it is "harmless" entertainment and not a danger to the church.

L'Osservatore Romano ran a review and an editorial in Wednesday's edition, critiquing the movie based on the Dan Brown best-selling novel of the same name.

"Angels & Demons" had its world premiere Monday in Rome, after director Ron Howard charged that the Vatican interfered with getting film permits to shoot scenes in the city _ a contention the Vatican said was a publicity stunt.

The newspaper wrote that the movie was "a gigantic and smart commercial operation" filled with "stereotyped characters." The paper suggested moviegoers could make a game out of finding the many historical inaccuracies in the plot.

However, L'Osservatore praised Howard's "dynamic direction" and the "magnificent" reconstruction of locations like St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. Much of the film was shot on sets that painstakingly recreated church landmarks.

The film offers "more than two hours of harmless entertainment, which hardly affects the genius and mystery of Christianity," L'Osservatore's reviewer wrote. It's "a videogame that first of all sparks curiosity and is also, maybe, a bit of fun."

"Angels & Demons" features Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon of "The Da Vinci Code" fame, played by Tom Hanks. In the film, the Vatican turns to Langdon after an ancient secret brotherhood called the Illuminati kidnap four cardinals considered front-runners to be the next pope, and threaten to kill one an hour and then explode a bomb at the Vatican.

On Sunday, Howard said the Vatican had interfered with his efforts to get permits to shoot some scenes. A Vatican spokesman said the statement was designed purely to drum up publicity for the film.

Top church officials strongly objected to "The Da Vinci Code" because it was based on the idea that Jesus married and fathered children and depicted the conservative Catholic movement, Opus Dei, as a murderous cult.

"The theme is always the same in both novels: a sect versus the church, even though the parts of the good and the bad are distributed differently," L'Osservatore wrote Wednesday. "This time, with 'Angels & Demons,' the church is on the side of the good guys."

The editorial said the novels presented the church's positions in a "simplistic and partial" way. It said the success of Brown's works should push the church to rethink the way it uses the media to present its message.

Well halabalou. The church deems this movie harmless and NOT a threat to the church.

No ringing bells alerting an editor that a scene or movie needs to be cut.

The church is still in the business of censorship gotta keep the wool pulled over the eyes of that flock of sheep don' cha know.

The only real anger that should exist here is from the real writers of our day that watch Dan Brown find success

So you are arguing with his success, both as a writer and a moneymaker?
I never read a book by nystateofmind, so I can't compare. I liked Dan Brown's books and am looking forward to his next.

Wow, you can say that again. I haven't read Angels and Demons, but the Da Vinci Code was utter crap, even for a "beach book"! Oh, well. He's not the only hack who's raking in the dough.

It's the 21st Century already. The church could do worse than to hire Father Ted and Father Dougal lookalikes to stand out front with their picket signs; "Careful Now" and "Down With This Sort of Thing". But that would require a sense of humor. "Dogma" was the best advertisement for what faith SHOULD be and they never realized it because they never watched it.

The only thing that is a danger to religion is rational thought.

fortunately for religion that seems to be in short supply, along with common sense

Sounds like the Vatican's PR department is getting more canny. This strikes just the right tone to prevent any controversy.

yup.

the church knows controversy stirs up interest. so if no fire storm, people will forget about the movie and watch Star Trek or X-men Origins Wolverine instead.

I thought the 1st movie davachi code was boring so no interest in 2nd.

i bet the producers are angry at vatican for this. they want more profit

Nothing as charmingly ironic as a church complaining about historical fact.

Your point is well taken, but even you must understand that regardless of your personal opinion, The Church does, in fact, enjoy a rich, complicated, and well documented history.

I have no interest in altering your beliefs, but it is [not so] "charmingly ironic" that atheists are so hell bent (my little pun) on debunking the beliefs of others.

An honest atheist would live and let live (and perhaps mind his business)

You forget, atheism is practically a religion. So really, atheists like those whom you describe are no different than the fundamentalists they try to lump all religious people in with.

As an Atheist I agree with you EvasDaddy, but I think most of us are exactly as you say we should be. It's just everybody looking at us like we're mental and proceeding to preach and hound and bother us because there must be something wrong with us and we absolutely must not have morals or something.

I just had Mormons come to my door at 9:30am on Saturday to try and preach to me. I invited them in, offered some tea, and then proceeded to explain I'm an atheist and chastise them for that behavior.

I think you'll find that except for a few, most offensive atheists are being retaliatory. However I will be the first to admit that myself and the rest of the brights in my local community are like that, maybe we're the only ones. Atheists around me (and we are few in Texas) tend to mind our own business until we get mistreated. *shrugs*

For those who have doubt about the Vatican's early preemptive stand on the movie.

Much, if not all, of this film was done using this camera, by the way. Indie filmmakers: ready yourselves for the New World.

And regarding the Vatican comments about the movie's veracity, we can conclude that the bible isn't. No?
I'm just asking. . . .

What a relief! I feel better now. The Vatican A.K.A. The house of the disconnected, did approve the movie, after - preemptively - being caught, lashing out at it, just in case it would be critical to its untouchable image.
Now we are waiting for the American pantomime: The Rt Rev Malcolm McMahon. He has already stated that the movie, which he hasn't seen yet, could exacerbate anti-Catholic sentiment.
Those people have made themselves - as declared Christians - Godly, untouchable, and shield, to any kind of critic.
They can harbor pedophiles, rest on a past of war and desolation, and remain an exception to Justice. They answer not to us but to God . . .
What a blank check!
P.S. do not listen to them . . . make up your own mind

Seems the Vatican and the Republican party have a lot in common. Start screaming about something you've never seen as being wrong, and then when you finally get to it, well, it's not so bad after all.
