This undated photo provided by the Rudy Garza Funeral Home and taken by Ultrashots studio shows Judy Trunnell. Texas health officials on Tuesday May 5, 2009 announced the first death of a U.S. resident with swine flu, and said Trunnell was a 33-year-old schoolteacher who had recently given birth to a healthy baby. Health officials stopped short of saying that swine flu caused the woman's death. HARLINGEN, Texas — This week should have been a joyous time for Judy Trunnell, a 33-year-old teacher who had just given birth to a healthy baby girl. But the friends and relatives whose cars lined the quiet street in front of her home in a quiet subdivision Tuesday instead were mourning her, the first American citizen with swine flu to die.

Trunnell died after being hospitalized for two weeks. She slipped into a coma, and her baby was delivered by Cesarean section, said a cousin, Mario Zamora.

"She was just a beautiful person, warm at heart. She worked with disabled children as a teacher," Zamora told WMAR-TV in Baltimore. "Those that knew her will always remember her."

Texas health officials stopped short of saying that swine flu caused Trunnell's death. State health department spokeswoman Carrie Williams said the teacher had "chronic underlying health conditions" but wouldn't give any details.

Pregnant women should not be alarmed, state health department spokesman Doug McBride said Wednesday.

"There are a number of health conditions that put people in a higher risk group where they are more likely to develop serious complications should they get any type of influenza," McBride said. "Pregnancy is not a chronic condition."

Trunnell died early Tuesday after being hospitalized since April 19, said Leonel Lopez, Cameron County epidemiologist. She was extremely ill when she was hospitalized, said Dr. Joseph McCormick, regional dean of the University of Texas School of Public Health's Brownsville campus.

Trunnell taught in the Mercedes Independent School District about 15 miles west of her hometown of Harlingen, a city of about 63,000 near the U.S.-Mexico border.

Mercedes school Superintendent Walter Watson said he was told early Tuesday that Trunnell died after being taken off life support.

"It brings tears to my eyes to my eyes to know she won't be with our children or hers," he said.

"You just don't replace people like that," Watson said.

When students were told Tuesday that Trunnell would not be coming back, some of the older students had questions, said Travis Elementary Principal Pearl Guerrero. Some wanted to know about her baby. Others wanted to know about her 4-year-old daughter whom some had met.

"She was a young lady who had everything to live for," Guerrero said. "She was excited to have a new baby. She had so many things to look forward to and now she's gone."

Trunnell was first seen by a physician April 14. Doctors knew she had flu but did not know what kind, Lopez said. The area is undergoing a Type A influenza epidemic and swine flu is one variety of that, he said. She was confirmed to have swine flu shortly before she died, he said.

U.S. health officials on Tuesday withdrew their recommendation that schools with suspected swine flu cases shut down for two weeks. Mercedes school district officials said the district would close its schools until Monday.

The only other swine flu death in the U.S. was that of a Mexico City toddler who also had other health problems and had been visiting relatives in Brownsville, near Harlingen. He died last week at a Houston children's hospital.

There have been 29 other confirmed swine flu deaths, all in Mexico. Hundreds of cases of the disease have been confirmed in several countries, but mostly in Mexico and the U.S.

Well, seems like people with weak immune systems are more prone to get "SICK". Who woulda thunk?
Besides that fact, I am sorry to her family....

I just want to know if the national media is going to have any remorse whatsoever for another round of scare-tactic, sensationalized, hysterics reporting. World health organizations and presidential administrations, while they didn't do a very good job of educating the public right off the bat, at least have an excuse for making us a little paranoid. Their reputations are on the line and better for them to err on the side of caution.

But what's media's excuse for the 24-hour schizo-flu coverage? There's been one unvaccinated toddler and a woman with 'underlying medical conditions' who's died from H1N1 but by their coverage you would've thought it was Captain Tripps from 'The Stand' and we should all panic and go loot stuff. You'd think that when schools started closing, graduation ceremonies postponed, vacations cancelled, people avoiding subways and airplanes like the plague and Egypt saying it was going to kill every pig in the country, they might've taken a step back and said 'Whoa, maybe it's not that bad.'

They're still calling it swine flu even though the WHO has said there's no definitive proof it's transferred from pigs to humans. So go eat a ham sandwich, put down the gasmask and stop builiding that underground shelter. Because it turns out it's just more BS from our journalism community whose gotten to the point where everything they say you have to take with a grain of salt and go get the real story for yourself.

The media frenzy was very useful for forcing the issue of prosecuting the three Bush administration torture lawyers (one now a federal judge) out of the news limelight. Virstaysh? Comprendo? Understand?

As far as I know noone's been prosecuted at all. There's been talk about impeaching Bybee from his judgeship but so far that's just talk. And I think Pelosi would be wise to be careful about what she's doing because not only she, but the Senate intelligence committee which had many popular democrat senators on it, got the same memos and briefings on 'enhanced interrogation techniques' that the white house did. I have a feeling the far left wing would cool off the jailhouse talk if Pelosi, Diane Feinstein, etc. were on the prosecutor's slab right next to Dick Cheney.

In a perfect world they'd all be in jail but that's neither here nor there. My point was responsible journalism and this further punctuates my point seeing as how there's so much biased journalism now you never get the whole story.

The woman has relatives with Hispanic surnames. Obviously she had contact
with Mexicans and/or went to Mexico recently in order to have contracted this
flu.

If i were pregnant and in poor health and had read any news reports, I would have
enough sense not to consort with ANY people possibly carrying the disease from
its source in Mexico.

Early death is sad, but dopey is lethal.

And i am a teacher (of German and French to, of course, the brightest students).
Nature is a harsh mistress, and culling is part of that process.

A beautiful, productive member of our country dies and you toss it off to "culling" and dopey behavior? Your compassion is beyond pathetic.

It's too bad you didn't take time to read the article because she had already sought medical treatment on April 14th, just before we were aware of a possible pandemic.

What is the point of your teaching German and French to only "the brightest" students have to do with this woman's loss of life? How much more narcissistic can you get?

Rest in peace Judy Trunnell.

Wow, what a winning attitude. By chance are you a Republican?

My condolences to Judy's family. How sad for her little baby having to grow up without a mom.

ITS SAD BUT THAT'S THE POINT! She joined the ranks of how many people die from a black widow spider bite, how sad. I cannot stand the words "swine" and "flu" together as much as the phrase "Y2K". Please stop this madness in media!

They are saying this flu is MILD...yeah right. That's why my kids are not going back to school-they are out the middle of May. My son has asthma and my daughter has diabetes. I'm not taking a risk.

Life is always hanging in limbo. One day we are here and the next we are gone. This is unfortunate. I hope her child is able to strive on and survive this horrible place with out his/her mom. But this is life only the strong will survive. Much grace/peace to this new arrival as it has been handed a crazy hand hope he/she can chage the deck they were dealt.

Sometimes the coincidence of photo placement is just...awful.

There on the right of this page you have this beautiful young lady - a do-gooder - who dies without fulfilling the future she should have had.

Right above Bernie Madoff, who stole the futures of so many.

Sad for some, and the greed of other people hoping for unrealistic returns on statistically improbably investments? I chuckle.

-Way to keep the fear level high and rising by refusing to provide the public with facts.

Seems like some bureaucrats never quite grasp "transparency". This is information that transcends Ms Trunnell's privacy rights. Others may have similar situations and need to take extra precautions. It is very sad that she died from this. We need now to think of the living.

Perhaps it is because she wasn't confirmed to have the H1N1 virus. In that case, her death, her illness is her and her family's business and not yours.
