Dan Rather Dresses Up For "Daily Show" Sketch Mocking Media On Obama Burger (VIDEO)

Dan Rather joined Jon Stewart in mocking the media's coverage of President Obama and Vice President Biden's trip to Ray's Hell Burger Tuesday by dressing up as a 1973 newsman and creating a fake report of a Nixon/Kissinger burrito run.

"I'm standing outside Washington, DC's Cancun Mexican restaurant," Rather said, dressed in a wig. "Inside, President Nixon and Secretary of State Kissinger are enjoying some traditional Mexican entrees. I'm told the President ordered Mexicana Madness — that's a spicy chicken burrito — while Dr. Kissinger opted for a fish taco (lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, onions, and copious amounts of a substance known to locals as 'guacamole')."

Rather continued, reporting that Nixon and Kissinger got separate checks — "they're going Dutch on this!" — and joking that Nixon said he doesn't make his own burritos because, "I am not a cook."

Dan got thrown under the bus on that whole thing about Dubya's military service, which was too bad.

Yeah, Dubbya's military service was much more of a joke than anything Rather did to uncover it. The network totally threw Dan under the bus on that one.

Rather than a skit on Dan Rather covering Nixon, Stewart should have shown the cojones to mock himself, as, just the night before, he was himself obsessing over the manner in which Obama ordered the burger (he was too slow, according to Stewart). All this makes ya want to throw out your tv.

I saw that last night. His comic timing was exquisite. Maybe a new career is opening up as a faux reporter lost in a time warp.

I'll always remember watching the news about Hurricane Carla and Dan Rather reporting in the midst of it. He was the first reporter to report directly from the location of a hurricane. Pretty exciting stuff to watch in 1963, when tv was still in its early years. Here are some Ratherisms to enjoy:

That was the event that got him noticed. He wrote about it in "The Camera Never Blinks." The other big first was that he had the brilliant idea of pointing a camera at the radar screen. It was the first time the public saw the now-familiar image of an approaching storm on radar. He got the network job at CBS, then happened to be their man on the scene in Dallas that November when JFK was shot. He was the first to go on air with the president's death. He had a chance at getting the Zapruder film for CBS, but Life magazine bought it before he got clearance from the network. Anyway, read the book, it's a great story of, IMHO, TV's greatest reporter.
