What's Your Reaction?
Obama Hannty

[Good Lord, this has become a full-blown "thing" now. Please see utterly deranged updates, below.]

Oh hi, everyone! Are we still doing that election year thing, where if a politician consumes anything other than box wine, Busch, and self-killed moose meat, it means they are elitist? Apparently, this is the case, and so, the national nightmare for arugula -- which would probably be better off if it were referred to as "rocket" like the Brits do -- continues.

As you know, President Obama and Vice President Biden made a historic trip to an Arlington, VA hamburger joint, to celebrate the "stress tests" or something, bringing the entire press corps in tow. Well, it took all of Sean Hannity's brain power to come up with a joke about it, but he finally decided to make fun of the fact that Obama wanted a "spicy" or "Dijon" mustard on his cheeseburger, just like the undead Nikita Khruschev prefers.

[WATCH.]

Of course, I could harp on the fact that Grey Poupon is actually a pretty inexpensive condiment, a bottle of which I have right now in my palatial 800-square-foot apartment manor, but that's really beside the point. If you really want to dig down into the elitism of the outing, consider this - as Washingtonian points out, at Ray's Hell Burgers, "You can order the patties simply grilled, with a chipotle-spiked 'diablo' marinade, blackened Cajun-style, or au poivre with a black-peppercorn crust." Fancy! And if Obama had really wanted to strut his elite tastes, he could have opted to add any number of artisanal cheeses, like Dutch mustard seed Gouda, Queen Anne Stilton, or a cave-aged Amish cheddar. See! If Hannity had done some research, he could have really unleashed an epic, idiot barrage over fancy foodstuffs.

Of course, the burgers start at $7, because restauranteur Michael Landrum seems to think that quality food should be made affordable. Enjoying the burgers are well within reach of multimillionaire infotainer toffs like Sean Hannity. Anyway, Dijon mustard: normal people eat it, you can get it at fracking Au Bon Pain, for Pete's sake, so, enough. Okay? Enough. And thus endeth Eat The Press' brief foray into Zagats' territory.

UPDATES:

Here's Mark Steyn, subbing for Rush Limbaugh, saying, "John Kerry couldn't get away with that stuff but he makes it seem like just like a regular thing to do." Awesome, Mark! A John Kerry joke! Wow. Tell us more about your exciting trip back in time to the magical world of 2004!

And here's Laura Ingraham, wondering, "What kind of man orders a cheeseburger without ketchup, but Dijon mustard?"

What kind of man orders a cheeseburger without ketchup? Uhm, how about a FULL GROWN ONE? Ketchup, and it's cousin "catsup," doesn't come near my food, because I am no longer a small child. And Media Monitor Phillip G. adds the following insight into ketchup:

It's a Chicago thing. Ketchup (in particular on hot dogs) is a serious faux pas.

Philip points out this admonition from the good people at the Vienna Beef hotdog company, who warn: "If you ask for ketchup, you'd better be under the age of twelve." (I sort of think this coddles eleven year-olds.)

I'm sure the President spends an inordinate amount of time wishing he could be a "man of the people" like Sean Hannity. I know I do.

...and, alas, here we are, from coast to coast...and on blogs such as this one, talking about "mustard" so, mission accomplished Sean.

The mustard issue, and how it became an issue at all is a metaphor, I suppose, for how a discussion of the pros and cons or the virtue vs. the vice of t*orture begins in the first place. The subject of how America could ever have gotten to the point where suddenly t*orture is actually being given a platform in such a way, was discussed by Naomi Klein and Matt Taibi the other night on Bill Maher's show. Up until the last few years, t*orture was...well, t*orture. No further explanation was needed. Now, here in these modern times, wherever you turn, it's become such a daily part of the vernacular and discussion that it's been given credence...a life of its own. A generation ago, discussion of such a topic as t*orture was unthinkable because it was what it was and considered such by the consensus. Now, it seems, the consensus wants to think of it as something worth discussing. I wonder how much lower we can go as a society. I'd be curious to see if we can go any lower than rock bottom before I'm d*ead and gone. Because "rock bottom", in my estimation, is when we begin discussing t*orture as if there should be any discussion at all. Once again, mission accomplished Sean.

Not sure if anyone caught Matt Taibi on Bill Maher the other night but he, without specifically mentioning Sean Hannity, et al., did a pretty decent job of articulating his frustration (thruout the show) of how America has dropped about as low as it can go (and in my estimation, to the point of no return) when it gets to the point that it allows such an issue as that of Sean Hannity (mustard on the hamburger thing) to get into the mainstream of news and daily discourse. In a broader sense, just the mere fact that here in the 21st century we've, collectively, allowed a "news" organization (Fox) to exist, and to prosper no less, by giving it viewership, and thus the continued "light of day" tells me that Americans simply are no longer able to (if they ever were to begin with) contextualize what is and isn't worthy of news and discourse. I imagine that 40 years ago, the likes of Sean Hannity would have been relegated to cable access where, back in the 70's, the "n*uts" found refuge. Now, here he is about as mainstream as one can. So, the moral of this story is, if we keep feeding the beast, the beast will continue to eat...and will continue to grow. As Pogo said to Porky in 1971, "YEP, SON, WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY AND HE IS US. "

Get a life. Is there nothing else they can talk about. Talk about the dumbing down of the public...I get it. You must lack culture, have the IQ of an amoeba and have a 500 word vocabulary to be considered common folk. Now that IS carry! Being intellectually astute is just NOT cool by Hannities standards.

I watched that clip and I recall the Pres. asking for mustard. But, he didn't specify what type. I'm pretty sure simply asked for mustard.

What's wrong with these Pucktards?!?!

maybe Obama puts mustard on his burger because ketchup is full of High Fructose Corn Syrup.
Some of us care what we put in our bodies but Hanity wouldn't understand that because he is a
Fat $h!t.

I agree with you...
When Obama won the election, Coca-Cola hastily announced that they were going to develop soft drinks with stevia!! ...this is an unheralded WOW moment that fell way below the media radar....

Some think that the High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) lawsuits will rival the Tobacco litigation...
It might even be a great idea to fund some of the public health system with the ill gotten gains of the HFCS industry!
A nation can't have a public health system that predictably manufactures sick citizens. by allowing harmful ingredients in its food supply. Not only is the cost unsustainable, but human lives are being destroyed. This is definitely something to pay attention to...

Though given that stevia is banned as unsafe in Europe...

Come on, it's used as *birth control* (by the men) by the indigenous people where it comes from. How does *that* qualify as no health effects?

Don't order Ketchup if you're from Chicago....... They'll look at you funny and give you a tomato. Obama is true to his Chicago roots. Although, Chicagoans tend to prefer yellow mustard to spicy mustard.

Hannity is carrying the Red States idea too far.

Gimme everything except mayo and grilled onions if you've got'em. Yours is however you prefer. That's the democratic way.
