What's Your Reaction?
Obama Hannty

[Good Lord, this has become a full-blown "thing" now. Please see utterly deranged updates, below.]

Oh hi, everyone! Are we still doing that election year thing, where if a politician consumes anything other than box wine, Busch, and self-killed moose meat, it means they are elitist? Apparently, this is the case, and so, the national nightmare for arugula -- which would probably be better off if it were referred to as "rocket" like the Brits do -- continues.

As you know, President Obama and Vice President Biden made a historic trip to an Arlington, VA hamburger joint, to celebrate the "stress tests" or something, bringing the entire press corps in tow. Well, it took all of Sean Hannity's brain power to come up with a joke about it, but he finally decided to make fun of the fact that Obama wanted a "spicy" or "Dijon" mustard on his cheeseburger, just like the undead Nikita Khruschev prefers.

[WATCH.]

Of course, I could harp on the fact that Grey Poupon is actually a pretty inexpensive condiment, a bottle of which I have right now in my palatial 800-square-foot apartment manor, but that's really beside the point. If you really want to dig down into the elitism of the outing, consider this - as Washingtonian points out, at Ray's Hell Burgers, "You can order the patties simply grilled, with a chipotle-spiked 'diablo' marinade, blackened Cajun-style, or au poivre with a black-peppercorn crust." Fancy! And if Obama had really wanted to strut his elite tastes, he could have opted to add any number of artisanal cheeses, like Dutch mustard seed Gouda, Queen Anne Stilton, or a cave-aged Amish cheddar. See! If Hannity had done some research, he could have really unleashed an epic, idiot barrage over fancy foodstuffs.

Of course, the burgers start at $7, because restauranteur Michael Landrum seems to think that quality food should be made affordable. Enjoying the burgers are well within reach of multimillionaire infotainer toffs like Sean Hannity. Anyway, Dijon mustard: normal people eat it, you can get it at fracking Au Bon Pain, for Pete's sake, so, enough. Okay? Enough. And thus endeth Eat The Press' brief foray into Zagats' territory.

UPDATES:

Here's Mark Steyn, subbing for Rush Limbaugh, saying, "John Kerry couldn't get away with that stuff but he makes it seem like just like a regular thing to do." Awesome, Mark! A John Kerry joke! Wow. Tell us more about your exciting trip back in time to the magical world of 2004!

And here's Laura Ingraham, wondering, "What kind of man orders a cheeseburger without ketchup, but Dijon mustard?"

What kind of man orders a cheeseburger without ketchup? Uhm, how about a FULL GROWN ONE? Ketchup, and it's cousin "catsup," doesn't come near my food, because I am no longer a small child. And Media Monitor Phillip G. adds the following insight into ketchup:

It's a Chicago thing. Ketchup (in particular on hot dogs) is a serious faux pas.

Philip points out this admonition from the good people at the Vienna Beef hotdog company, who warn: "If you ask for ketchup, you'd better be under the age of twelve." (I sort of think this coddles eleven year-olds.)

I'll tell you how the rich really eat ketchup, and mustard: while on an office trip at The Breakers, in West Palm Beach, when you order a $25 burger from their restaurant, they give you a tiny little single serve glass ketchup (or mustard) bottle with a regular metal lid. Yeah, that's right, rich folk are too elite to use a communal bottle of ketchup! They prefer the massive waste that goes with tiny individual bottles, glass and metal, and somehow I really doubt they do any recycling........

but for the record, ketchup and mustard are equally available.

Good Sean, you have appealed to the cream (creme?) of the crop of you listening audience. Would the fact that George Bush choked on "pretzels" make him a Nazi sympathizer? The criticism bar is getting lower and lower.....

I voted for Obama and have supported him even throughout the unfortunate and unsettling news that he liked arugula. I love potato pie so my trust in him was reassured at that information and, in fact, became a principal reason why I voted for him and not McCain (and his multiple houses).

This latest news by Hannity, (who clearly must be viewed as our modern equivalent of Ed Murrow) has left me devastated. Our president has put Dijon mustard on his hamburger!!!! This is not only a serious diplomatic faux pas (I cant’ remember how to say it in republican), a culinary (I can’t remember how to say that in republican either) abomination but prima facie (ditto) that this man is not an American and most certainly a socialist. He could have at least put English mustard on the hamburger and left us with an Anglo Saxon ray of hope. I am moving to Canada IMMEDIATELY!! At least Canadians don’t lie about the fact that they aren’t’ real Americans.

The party that gave us KETCHUP as a vegetable now gives us MUSTARD as a political issue. This bunch has gone through the drive-through and they're not coming back now! Bye bye repubs.

fricking stupid thing to cover on both sides. to assume Obama has any resemblance to the normal guy is idiotic.

I wonder if he ate his burger with cutlery or his pinky's out....

Both sides? Are you out of your mind? It's not the lefties who made anything of it. Only the right-wing-lunatic-fringe is so desperate to come up with something - anything to criticize.
They are really running on empty and you can't see it.

You and Hannasty are idiots, who cares what anyone puts on a burger?

My family members all love Obama because he's the most like them than any president in memory. I'm sorry that you think a well-educated smart man bears no resemblance to the normal guy, but in my part of the country, that is normal.

At least he eats burgers like everyone. What will it take to make you happy???

Heh, he could've been vegan like Dennis Kucinich! Then we'd be hearing about him ordering cupcakes that are $2.50 each from Sticky Fingers Bakery (no kidding, they're that expensive, but they're delicious and vegan, and yes Kucinich is one of their customers--they have a signed photo of him over the register).

LOL!! How cow! (sorry ASPCA) I can't even begin to believe that a type of mustard (foreign or domestic) is a topic of the talking heads! Is there any wonder why I gave up watching TV, let alone "the news" more than 15 years ago. Our country is facing its worst social and economic times in the history that most of us can remember and freakin' mustard is the best thing they can find to make news out of??? Fox must be desperate for an Emmy. That would explain their efforts of trying hard to emulate the SNL news team. At least they acknowledge that they're comedy. Fox is just a joke....

I agree with all that post here: irrelevant.

But the people that thought Obama was a "man of the people" during the election were equally manipulated. Obama comes from a wealthy family, he went to a rich prep school, he went to Haaavurd, the dude is anything but a regular Joe.

There's nothing wrong with that. And it is funny how the wacky right wing media tries to portray it as a bad quality.

No righty EVER made fun of William F. Buckley for being an old fuddy-duddy snob. And god knows he never ate regular mustard nor ketchup. Or what about Ben Stein? It seems the conservatives have more stuff shirts than the liberals.

The right-wing media is trying to appeal to the uneducated masses, sort of like the Nazis did. They dig in to those meaningless, yet emotionally filled issues like what one eats on their cheddar burger.

Obama won a scholarship to go to a private school, and Harvard. You don't need money to go to an IVY league grad school, just brains. Read his books, do some research, he was NOT rich.

You have been manipulated.

It's takes smarts to ruin a country!!!

I agree, the conservatives have nothing better to do then look for reasons to not appreciate the man who's trying to turn our country in the right direction. This is utterly ridiculous. IS THIS REALLY WHAT WE'VE COME TO? We're criticizing President Obama over what he puts on his food? I guess we should impeach him if he comes within 10 feet of mayo...

I can't believe how desperate the Republican are for things to knock President Obama for...and mustard is as low as one can go and still manage to sound dumb. I love mustard with or without other goodies on my bugger's and hot dogs. The neo-cons sound like total idiots to everyone except themselves. They need to find new jobs... this can't be news or of any importance.

Folks, this is the reason the GOP is irrelevant. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Now there's a REAL man--Bush clears his own brush AND eats ordinary mustard AND sends 19-year olds into senseless wars. Clearly what Hannity wants in the White House--"all hat and no cattle" as is said in Texas.

Thank goodness Americans chose substance this last election, and (except for the 29% loony-tunes who long for the Bush-days) really don't care what a man puts on his hamburger as long as he has some compassion and excels at his job.

Looks like Mr. Hannity picked the "Freedom of Condiment Choices" off his own "Liberty Tree" .
Put it right in that "Crate of Socialism" without even knowing it.
I believe Shawn gets my vote for best Republican Cartoon Character this week. Well there was Michelle Bachamn and her "orgy and blowing wads"porn talk earlier . It's a tough call with the quantity of stupidity the Repubs provide us with every day..but always a good laugh.
