TEHRAN, Iran — Nine people, including a 30-year-old woman, have been hanged in Iran, state media reported Thursday.

The state-run daily newspaper IRAN said four of the nine including the woman were convicted of murder in separate cases and were hanged Wednesday. The woman was found guilty of killing her husband with a hammer, it said.

Five others convicted of drug trafficking were hanged in the southeastern city of Kerman, some 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) southeast of the capital, Tehran, state radio reported. It did not say when they were hanged.

No other details were immediately known. The nine were only identified by their first names.

Murder, rape, armed robbery, kidnapping and drug trafficking are all punishable with the death penalty under Iran's Islamic penal law. Iran has executed more than 90 people this year according to media reports.

The country does not publish official statistics on executions.

Iran's leaders are criminals themselves. Who knows if these people who were hanged were really criminals? They have 30-minute trials there and in most cases the defendent has no lawyer representing them.

I'm surprised by Japan. All the other countries are Third World countries and many parts of the US are experiencing Third World conditions. .

And? Texas executes mentally disabled people. USA goes creates a fake war of lies and hangs a leader who had nothing to do with 9/11. What's the point?

People say capital punishment doesn't deter crime, but it sure deters the criminal.

You're right. General deterrence has never worked. For instance, pickpocketing was a capital offense several hundred years ago in England, yet pickpocketing was rampant while people watched hangings. Specific deterrence, well, what more can you say (unless a zombie plague breaks out!). While I cheered when people like Ted Bundy 'rode the lightning', I don't imagine the US will keep capital punishment for much longer if current abolitionist trends continue. But if the woes of society worsen, expect more executions. If we turn a corner and things improve, expect less, if not an outright ban.

In Iran they take the slogan "if you can't do the time don't do the crime" seriously.

The death penalty is something America and Iran have in common. Nice.

More - you bad - we good (obedience will be rewarded)

Hanging is visually brutal in my opinion but so is frying someone for an extended period of time.

END capital punishment worldwide.

And in other news, a man in the U.S. faces 85 years in prison for running a medical marijuana clinic. Murder 1 is 20 years.

I don't think America can really criticize countries who use the death penalty since America does the same.

"Since the dea.th penalty was reinstated in 1976, 1,160 convicted murderers have been executed in the United States. (As of May 1, 2009)

Of those executed, 11 were female. (The last was Frances Elaine Newton in Texas on September 14, 2005). Of those executed, 22 were under the age of 18 at the time of the murder. (The last was Scott Allen Hain in Oklahoma on April 3, 2003). Of those executed, 656 (57%) were white and 397 (34%) were black.

Of those executed: 991 (85%) were executed by lethal injection, including 513 of the last 521 executions. 155 were executed by electric chair (The last was James Earl Reed in South Carolina on June 20, 2008). 11 were executed by gas chamber (The last was Walter LeGrand in Arizona on March 3, 1999). 3 were executed by hanging (The last was Billy Bailey in Delaware on January 25, 1996). 2 were executed by firing squad (The last was John Albert Taylor in Utah on January 27, 1996).

Executions were held in 34 different states: 437 (37%) were in Texas and 19 were in Indiana."

What? But Iran is the paradise of the radical left! These news are probably an evil Zionist invention.

The lack of posts to this article tells it all. So much bias against Israel it's ridiculous.

I realize you guys don't do nuance. However, here in the grown-up world there's a range of possible opinions between:

"I think we should bomb them back to the stone age, preferably this afternoon"

and

"I think Iran is paradise"

I never advocated for a military attack against Iran. However, strangely enough, Iran is never mentioned by any Israel critic. I myself belive Israel has responsibility in the conflict, especially in what concerns settlements (this is not the appropriate place to expose my views on that). However, everyone that criticizes Israel fails to mention Iran's active role in the conflict as the main supporter of terrorist groups that have the intention of destroying Israel.
Criticizing Israel while conveniently ignoring Iran's grave negative deeds is what I call double standards.

Paulo,

"again"? BS.
Iran is a good role model for punishemnt of the drug trafficers and murderers. We could learn from them. No wonder U.S. get the honor of being the first in the world for murder and drugs and you are worried about gays?

I love you Mol-ji. You remind me that reactionary patriotism isn't just found in America. The last eight years have been brutal and as we slowly divest ourselves of rabid, mind-numbing chauvinism; somehow it's refreshing to see other examples from other lands. I'd give you a big wet kiss of gratitude, but I infer from your homophobic comments you wouldn't like it (?).
