Wrong gender and WAY too OLD!
You know... not to play Devil's advocate or anything, but if we're trying to break up the "old white male" imbalance by making the Court more representative of the general population, African-Americans make up about 13% of the nation, while Hispanic or Latino stands at 15%. Of course, women make up over half the population, so there should be females sitting in five out of the nine seats. But sure, let's fight over what appearances make for the better SCOTUS-based sitcom, rather than qualifications or anything...
Second? who's the first??
LOL that was my first thought too!
I think competancy would be the biggest factor- regardless of race, sex or sexuality... I hope Obama does not bend to any pressure group. We need the best person to combat Scalia, Roberts and Alito who are a danger to America.
Well it would be only the only black justice on the court if president nominated another black justice because Thomas is just black in pigmentation (what a disgrace). As a black man it would make me proud to see another black person appointed to the supreme court, but I think it is time for a Hispanic or Asian to be appointed to the highest court.
Maybe, THIS time, a competent Black justice will be nominated. That would sure be a change from the last one.
Makes some sense. Justice for people of color would be better assured by by having no black jusitice than by having Clarence Thomas.
Oh yes, you have the wh...ite males like Mark Halperin lobbying for a wh...ite dude.
I guess this is in response to the G..ays "pressuring" the President to pick a g...ay person and the calls from whi..te women during the Democratic primary for the Dems to pick a white woman.
All the groups: Black, Hispanic, Female, Asian, Gay etc. need to STOP pressuring President Obama into picking 'one of their own'. Because if he does pick one of the above then the media will try to portray Obama as being weak and giving in under pressure.
I honestly think that his first pick of Justice will not be African-American because the media would have a field day with that. But when a second or third slot comes up down the line then that would be a good time to add another AA to the Supreme Court.
I do think that this time he will chose a female - probably Hispanic.
Next time an Asian male (Koh)
then an African-American female.
That would really make a diverse court.
It wouldd be good if one was gay or lesbian, too. They have NO representation on the bench (that we know of).
Koh would be a good choice.
Brothers, you can't surely count Clarence?
I hope Obama picks the best he can find...and not worry about pleasing all the interest groups yammering at him. However, an Af Am on the court would be the first justice. Thomas is a stooge planted there to make someone look diverse.
i don't think so. latinos are now the biggest minority group in the U.S. without a latino supreme court justice. there needs to be a latino justice before there is another black one. you have to represent the people of the land.
Too right .....
It is about diversity though. part of your statement "should pick who ever is most qualified for the job" has been used at times to hold minorities back. When picking a Supreme Court justice, race will factor into the equation from a diversity standpoint. How can it not. The Court needs to reflect the diversity that is in America today. Right now there is one woman, one African American(in pigment only) and 7 white men. No hispanics, native americans, asian american on the court.
