RealMoney.com/Yahoo! Finance:

Clearly, News Corp. is going to be a survivor. The publisher of The Wall Street Journal and several other daily papers in the U.S. has some significant advantages. Rupert Murdoch has proven to be adept at managing the assets and capital structure of the company, and I expect him to continue to do so....I think New York Times Co. survives, simply because I cannot imagine a world without the Times. It will not be in its current form, however. ... Gannett is a likely survivor as well. In the long run, its flagship national daily, USA Today is probably going to benefit from the wave of closings we have been seeing. ...Washington Post Co. is going to survive as well. The company has cable and television operations, in addition to the Kaplan Educational division that supports the struggling newspaper.

We need newspapers. But we don't need newspapers who never challenged President Bush's lies about WMDs. We don't need newspapers who covered up for financial corruption and deliberately kept readers in the dark about the housing crisis. We need responsible journalism and that failed before newspapers started to fail.

Nostalgia plays the key role in keeping us from giving up the paper. I love the IDEA of the Sunday paper but more and more I never get time to read it or I've already heard all the news (chiefly from the web or npr). I basically don't cancel because I want to support the local reportage. But it's so wasteful when you think of it; all of this paper and all the hardcore industrial processes that had to get that paper into your hands. The downside to all of this technological progress is the giant wake of dead industries it leaves in its path. And the permanently downsized workers. Yeah, the next couple of years are going to be interesting.

But the sooner we face the inevitable the better. Like the music industry had to, the newspaper industry will have to play with different kinds of subscription schemes and revenue streams. Though I won't miss "Parade" or whatever it is in your town. Feel free to kill that by all means.

I think "National" newspapers like USA Today and WSJ survive in paper form. I guess the New York Times, but I'm not sure that's a lock.

I think what may happen over the next 10 years or so is that most newspapers will only publish on Sundays. I don't know how that model will work to be cost-effective, but I know I rarely buy newspapers during the week anymore, but I love to get the Sunday papers for the coupons, crosswords, other special sections, etc.

And this country needs more people like you. You buy the paper for the coupons.

Why doesn't the DNC subsidize the Times?

The paper did all it could to get Dems elected and shouldn't it get some payback? (Or will they be forced to realize how disloyal libs are?)

They'll survive only for awhile. I for one will not go out running to buy a $6.00 New York Times.

It's unfortunate. This is not a good thing, even if you disagree with their editorial pages. I have little faith in the internet. I perfer a physical record.

No one really reads a paper on the internet. They may read a headline or two and a columnist, but it is way too time consuming to read it online. Too much clicking, downloading, and killing popups.

Funny... those Rupert Murdoch newspapers seem to be doing just fine... along with his networks.

Usually proper-gander outfits go out of business once people recognize it... instead Rupert's mouthpieces are growing. Perhaps the legacy media has been exposed as being less than forthright with it's readers?

tsk tsk tsk... can't do that for long with this new fangled internit thang.

Well thank goodness at least the Tabloids are doing fine.

Where would we be without those sensational Octomom or Batboy or 13-year-old-dad stories??

Or, now " face-transplant lady " - boy, what a relief after the last few weeks of " homely singer-lady" stories.

(Waitiaminit - HuffPo didn't run a Batboy story, did it?)...

So hometown papers will be no more? Thats really not good. Who is going to do the investigations of local issues. Who will be reporting on the local landfill polluting a stream, or the corruption of local officials or coverage of local political races?

Investigative reporters will simply re-invent themselves and find other outlets and continue to do their jobs.

If the newspapers has stuck to the "who what when where how and why" they would be in much better shape. There is an art to writing an objective news story that has been lost in favor or copy that "reads better" or is "more interesting". It's impossible to find an article in a newspaper that is not opinionated or biased.

The walk up to the Iraq War has taught us that there are no news outlets in the USA that can be completely trusted Everybody remembers the Bush Administration leaking an untrue story to NYT and then having Cheney refer to it as fact on MTP. Also it is very clear that most of the news still originates from the wire services, AP, Rueters, BBC.

So unless the newspapers can return to their original mission of presenting the truth to the public, they are doomed.

I agree, and then they never searched out stories themselves but just printed verbatim what some press agent handed to them.

The press should report what is TOLD TO THEM. That's more than enough for the average person who barely has an IQ able to understand it.... 'Investigative journalism' is ipso facto BIASED by the political leanings of the 'journalist' engaging in it, thus it should be AVOIDED....

USA Today is a newspaper? If they didn't get all those contracts with business hotels, they'd be in as deep of doo dah as the rest of them.

USA " Yesterday" Is Useless. I am surprised they lasted this long. By the time you read it in that paper the story has been updated 10 times on the net.

I'm sorry to see USA Today on the list of keepers. It had a big hand in making this country be run by polls.

The New York Times is dead meat. The Sunday Edition may survive but a paper whose only real asset is a piece of a sports team is not going to make it. They need to drastically cut back operations and their online revenue dream is unattainable.

This paper has become one of the most hated publications in the country and has marginalized itself by alienating half the country with its sycophant like coverage of the election and has become the MSNBC of the newspaper industry. Has anyone seen MSNBC's ratings lately? Toilet bowl circling.

Its over. Admit it.

I don't understand where MSNBC went wrong. I mean if you want to know anything about the Republican Party, good or bad--no wait a minute just bad, just tune in from 4 pm in the afternoon until midnight, weekdays.

My wife and I like to play a game with them. We randomly tune in during their shows and see how long it it takes for them to start talking about Rebuplicans, Conservatives, or Fox Employees. It usually takes a matter of seconds and we're back to our regular programs.

National newspapers are good, but it's doesn't cover local news. We all have a stake in local newspapers surviving. Internet lovers don't be trick...local newspapers are too important to lose. Don't say it's content because people read it free online. We all must find a way for local print newspapers to survive.

We can pay in more taxes to then have the government bail them out too. They are too big to fail!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:16 AM on 05/07/2009

Slow to talk, I don't want our taxes to pay for the survival, but those who live in community buy your local newspaper: period.
