BATON ROUGE, La. — Stormy Daniels strode onstage at a downtown Baton Rouge restaurant in a tight black blouse with a plunging neckline and a knee-length skirt in the popular purple of Louisiana State University. She introduced herself with a warning.

"For those of you who don't know who I am," she told the lunch crowd at The Roux House, "I'd suggest that you don't Google that until you get home from work."

She's a Louisiana-born porn star who says she is considering a 2010 run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican David Vitter, whose family-values reputation was marred in 2007 when his name was linked to a Washington prostitution ring.

Daniels, 30, insists she's serious. She's spending her own money on a "listening tour" to hear what people have to say as she considers a possible run, and said she isn't just starting a publicity stunt to promote her work or embarrass Vitter. However, she said she hasn't lived in Louisiana for seven years _ she currently resides in Florida _ and would need to re-establish residency to run.

She sprinkled her presentation Tuesday with the occasional joke ("If you get any closer you're going to have to start tipping me," she told a crowd of reporters and photographers) but she kept the topics serious.

Daniels backs some issues common to many candidates, including bringing troops home sooner from Iraq and replacing the federal income tax with a national sales tax. Others are closer to her professional background, including pushing to remove child pornography from the Internet and keeping minors from viewing adult material.

She doesn't want to take questions about Vitter. "I think it's about time David Vitter started answering David Vitter questions," she said.

Vitter has steadfastly refused to discuss the "serious sin" he confessed to after his phone number was linked to Deborah Palfrey, the so-called "D.C. Madam" who committed suicide as she faced prison time for running a prostitution ring that catered to the powerful. His office declined to comment Wednesday on Daniels' possible candidacy.

Story continues below

Vitter, 48, kept a low profile in the months after his scandal broke but has emerged as a chief critic of government bailouts and President Barack Obama's spending plans _ popular stands in a state that went solidly for Republican John McCain in last year's presidential election.

He also has been aggressively fundraising, amassing $2.5 million in campaign funds for what will be his first re-election attempt since the Palfrey scandal broke. He won the Senate seat for the first time in 2004, spending more than $7 million to defeat four major opponents for the open position.

Noting Vitter's solid conservative stances and his healthy campaign account, Ed Chervenak, a political science professor at the University of New Orleans, doesn't think a Daniels candidacy would do much damage.

"It's probably going to be fairly easy for him to ignore her," he said.

"What it really shows is the lack of any real credible Democratic challenger," he added.

Pollster and political consultant Bernie Pinsonat agreed. But he said a possible Daniels' candidacy could be a distraction if Vitter is challenged in next year's Republican primary.

"Is she a threat to beat him? No. Is she really going to run? I seriously doubt it," Pinsonat said. "But if I had my druthers and I was running the campaign of David Vitter, I would rather she not be there."

Louisiana Secretary of State Jay Dardenne has expressed interest in the GOP primary. Others reportedly considering a run are retired state Supreme Court Justice Chet Traylor, a Republican; and state Sen. Eric LaFleur and Shaw Group CEO Jim Bernhard, both Democrats. Nobody has announced.

If nothing else, a Daniels candidacy could bring color to the Senate campaign the way adult film star Mary Carey did as a candidate for governor in California's 2003 recall race, which Arnold Schwarzenegger won. And Daniels could restore the spectacle missing from Louisiana politics since the unabashed gambler, reputed womanizer and now-felon Edwin Edwards left the governor's office in 1996.

Edwards was succeeded by the staid Mike Foster, the grandmotherly Kathleen Blanco and the young policy wonk, Bobby Jindal. All are a far cry from other colorful characters from Louisiana's political past: the windmill-armed Depression-era orator, Huey Long; country-singing Gov. Jimmie Davis, who once rode up the Capitol steps on horseback; or Gov. Earl Long, Huey's brother, who openly cavorted with Bourbon Street stripper Blaze Starr in the 1950s.

Daniels, meanwhile, has not committed to a candidacy _ or a political party.

She decided to explore a possible run after a draft movement started by fans after the Palfrey scandal broke, she said. "I completely ignored the whole thing for a while, and then I just got so much encouragement and feedback that I thought at the very least I owe it to myself and to the people to come out and see what they have to say."

At Mike Serio's Po-Boys & Deli in downtown New Orleans on Wednesday, the crowd was friendly but some seemed more interested in Daniels' film career, which includes starring roles in numerous adult movies, including 2007's "Operation: Desert Stormy," according to the film database IMDb.com. She has also written and directed adult films for the production company Wicked Pictures and won several adult movie industry awards.

"You look familiar. Not your face, though," said Jody Mathern, 51, a New Orleans man who said he works in the oil industry, drawing laughs from Daniels and a table full of oil patch workers. "She's a whole lot prettier than Vitter. But I still don't know what color her eyes are."

If a professional wrestler and a bodybuilder turned actor can be a governor of a state, then why can't a porn star become a US Senator? And considering who she's running against, it's a toss up frankly!

If she runs and wins, I hope she doesn't talk the same talk we've heard from the rest of the Louisiana delegation so far. What comes out of the mouth of someone like Virginia Foxx (different state, but you get my drift) should come out of the mouth of someone who LOOKS like Virginia Foxx. Watching a porno star make conservative republican speeches could lead to a vicious outbreak of ED all over the country.

Good for her. Keep it up! And, to those who have some kind of problem with her, take it up at the voting booth. No, you can't hide who you are these days, but it's incredibly cool to say, "This is what I did...and, now, this is what I'm going to do." Puts every damm politician we have seated today to shame!!

I don't see why they'd be a laughing stock. Perhaps a bit of a novelty for awhile until the furor died down, but that's it. Come on, Minnesota elected a former pro wrestler, California elected an action film star and former bodybuilder, Iowa elected Gopher from the Love Boat as a Congressman, and California also elected Sonny Bono as a Congressman as well! How is her work in entertainment any less legitimate than any of those men mentioned above?

To sum it up-- I blame the Democrats for letting this BS get this far, and not having a viable candidate up-and-running to take out the Dean of Distractions and Delays- David Vitter. I blame the Republicans for not having a primary to get rid of their DV problem themselves, and even letting the prospect of our state being made a national spectacle for the egos of both of these individuals.

LOUISIANA IS NOT A JOKE; ITS PROBLEMS ARE NOT FICTIONAL OR TRIVIAL, AND WE DO NOT NEED SOMEONE TO ADD MORE "COLOR/CONTROVERSY" TO THE ELECTION PROCESS, NOR TO ADD ANYMORE RIDICULE TO OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS---we have had more than enough rogues, and scalley-wags in our political history . A returning carpet-bagger ( yes, I know they came from the North after the Civil War), with a plunging neck line from a sister Southern State is not needed!! WE ARE NOT A JOKE

The good news is that Stormy is giving you guys national attention.
The bad news is that we only hear about Vitter and Stormy.
And that my friend could qualify as a joke.

It's a sad state of affairs.
Please give us, and especially yourselves, someone we can take seriously.

I read that Stormy is looking into removing child pornography; this is a good issue, I agree we should beef up our federal and state laws to protect children. OH WAIT, WE HAVE-- its against the law to distribute, possess, make, etc pictures, depictions, images of child pornography under federal law and Louisiana law ( did she not read our Civil Code). I would tell ya what to say in this matter and how to shape this argument to make it relevant for the State, but you are running for my vote so convince me you have a handle on this issue.

Another good issues, prohibiting kids from viewing adult material on the internet, however, since she is/was part of the industry putting out and promoting such adult content on the internet-- it seems just a little---ummm--what's the word----- HYPOCRITICAL. Come on Stormy, that dog just won't hunt.

Although I will admit she does have subject matter expertise on the making of this material, BUT it does not mean she understands the necessary First Amendment issues that are involved, or maybe she does since she was part of the problem.

It's against the law to illegally immigrate here, but you see how well that has worked.

There's a big difference between a law being on the books and one that actively enforced. Enforcement is determined by funding.

Great point Jurr , a major factor in enforcement is funding an it's lacking in many states, especially in the case of technology and the monitoring of cyber-predators. Why didn't Stormy cause a storm about that issue. Another factor in enforcement is policy, how are we enforcing the law on the books broadly, in our schools, libraries, etc, and is this policy effective. Here is an example of a lack of policy. When I taught school I had to keep a list of proxies the kids used to get around our safeguards, and report them to school which had no policy on such things.

Progressive,

You make a good point, she is up front about her profession , but in the 21st century could she hide it in the first place--No. Similarly, I agree that most politicians hide their private faces from the public, but as we found out with David Vitter, Sen. Allen, and John Edwards, etc in the internet age--everything comes to the light The difference is minimal at best, and both are wrong. Although you can avoid a snake that you see in the grass easier, than one that is hiding amongst the leaves, the fact that she is candid about something that can not be hidden is not a reason to applaud her candor. The real question is she the right person to represent the people of Louisiana on the national and often international stage to get redress for their issues.

You know, my thought was that her profession makes her a bit bullet-proof when it comes to typical political scandals. I mean, she's making no effort at all to hide what she's done, so it's not like there's political hay to be made out of it.

Just because she'd been in adult films doesn't mean she doesn't have a brain, and it does give her interesting insight into some of the issues of keeping kids away from inappropriate sites, and other related things as mentioned in the article.

I'd wait to see how she fares on the issues, and then make a judgement.

It also occurs to me.....I have to wonder if this were a male adult film star if that person would be taken more seriously than she seems to be being received right now?

You are right just because she is an adult film star does not mean she does not have a brain, and may give her an interesting insight into the adult content her industry has put on the web. However, it does hamper her effectiveness on the issue--its like the pot calling the kettle black. Also, I want to see how she deals with Louisiana specific issues, and not just the broad national interests.

Similarly, her profession is a factor especially in the South and in those church congregations that vote...trust me on this one. As to her gender and would she be taken seriously as a male porn star-- That is a red herring and a false argument. The truth is that ANY former or present adult film star running in the South would have a problem being taken seriously.

Ok, to the fans and internet drafters--STOP TRYING TO PUSH THIS WOMAN ON MY STATE!!!!

This is absolutely ridiculous, I know my State has a colorful past when it comes to politicians, but this is going too far. I may want Vitter gone, but I do not want a pornstar (former/present) as a representative of our State. I mean she hasn't even lived there in 7 years, so where was she doing Katrina and Rita? How many aid shelters did volunteer in, did/has she ever spoken out about the dismal responses to these disasters, when Brownie was doing an awful job; and how we could reconstruct our State; did she have an opinion on any of these things? NO!!

Instead she heard the clarion call of an internet campaign to draft her to save the Bayou State from Dastardly-David Vitter--and she rides in from Florida, like Lady Godiva ( nude on a white horse) --Give me a brake folks--this is a sick joke. LOUISIANA IS NOT A JOKE.

What about some of these current issues facing Louisiana in this economic crisis : the huge unemployment situation; the budget deficits in early, secondary, and post-secondary education; conservation of our coast line, marshes, and protection from future hurricanes; the shrinking oil revenues? The list goes on--Louisiana is a State that has real problems and needs real solutions. LOUISIANA IS NOT A JOKE.

Progressive, You are absolutely right about Jindal and Vitter, both are political hacks and party cronies.

Jindal ( a.k.a. Barney Fife, b.k.a. Anything Obama can do I can't do better) refused money for education and unemployment, when most of the parishes in the state were laying off 400 teachers a piece doubling class sizes. Also many of our institutions of higher education are facing a financial short-fall. Oh and lets not even get into the natural disaster prevention money. So not only can he give NOT give a good speech, he is also will doom the state to make a run in 2012.

Vitter ( a.k.a. Man-E-Faces; b.k.a. the Dean of Delays and Deception) helped delay stimulus money to the State, which now that it has gotten there is creating many blue-collar jobs by funding road projects.

Nevertheless, there are Democrats out there that can take them out in an election.

Sorry, Bayou. Despite your protestations, with a Senator like Vitter, a Governor like Jindl, a strong showing for McCain, and an illustrious past, your declaration of not being a joke comes off rather weak. I know it may not be your fault, but someone in your state is obviously dropping the ball.

I can't proffer an answer for your predicament. I don't know enough about the day to day in your state.
I have enough trouble with my adopted State of Florida to be making determinations about Louisiana.

You are right someone is dropping the ball, and its the La Democratic Party, who runs week candidates. The strong showing for McCain to be honest the darker side of our racial past, but it can be overcomed as it was by the Mayor of Baton Rouge. Our illustrious past does not make my declarations weak, but rather spot on and relevant. I know the day-to-day workings of the Louisiana. Its time to clean up the state and have better leaders.

Jindal won because Kathleen Blanco cried and showed weakness, during Hurricane Katrina and many people buyers remorse. It kind of gets you when you have family being chopped out of a roof, no power, the world around you is going to hell, and your leader is either dumbfounded or weak. Sort of like how I felt during the London bombings, when all the former President could say was terrorism was "Bad".Vitter don't get me started.

Johnie,
You are right someone has dropped the ball in Louisiana, and its the Louisiana Democratic Party, who has consistently run weak candidates that have no chance of winning. As for the strong showing for McCain, for the most part was bolstered by the ugly side of the racial divide (it exists), as well as the propaganda of fox news. However, there are signs that this may be thawing with politicians like the Mayor of Baton Rouge, who I hope will run against Jindal, and beat him.

Jindal got in b/c Kathleen Blanco looked weak during Hurricane Katrina, and most people had buyer's remorse. That can happen when you have a devastated city, family marooned in New Orleans, or being chopped out the roof, no power, the world going to hell all around you and your leader is either being weak or dumbfounded. I remember the feeling b/c its the same way I felt in London after the London bombings, and all the former President could say is " terrorism is hard" on the BBC.

As for my states illustrious past, this does not weaken my argument, it strengthens it, as it is this past which bolsters my argument that we don't need anymore rouges, etc for the country to make light of the state.

I don't care what a person has done for a living if s/he can do the job. How in the world did Vitter or Jindal get elected? Because to too many people in this state being pro life and "agin the gay" is better then being for helping this state progress.
I recently had my son in law and his family move here from Florida...they have four girls..and they are all ahead of the school system here in Livingston Parish. This school system is more worried about passing bibles out (which happened) then to have some kind of standard that will make our kids competitive. The 16 year old had the work she is doing now in the 6th and 7th grade in Florida. We have almost no high school graduates...but gee they teach Creationism (first law passed by Jindal the exersist) .
We pay the highest sales tax in this parish...9% but our schools are shameful...our parish counsil meets but passes laws that favor Christian churches and have to constantly be taken to court to follow the Constitution...wasteing our money and breaking the Establishment clause.

The south will never rise out of the swamps if they think that the 1860's will ever return. And I am tired of liers getting by with their lies (yes that means you Cassidy!).

Terra,

You make a GREAT POINT , about the educational issues of our state. I also want our kids to be competitive.

The Louisiana educational system is lagging behind, it is crazy that to teach in La schools our prospective teachers go through the most rigorous certification process( it can take about 2 years, evaluations, the portfolio you have to create, you have to specialize and get a Masters, etc..) in the U.S., and we have one of the worst educational systems. I know this because I had to work in the field, and saw the slipping standards, budget issues, faced in our State. For example, did you know a parish pasted an ordinance that mandated that teachers could not give a grade lower than 20%, so kids only needed 30% to pass. It was awful.

Similarly, I agree instead of teaching Creationism and passing out bibles, we should concentrate on basic skills in Math, Reading, English grammar ( good God). I remember working for an after school program in New Orleans, and a child in 6th grade asked me how to spell his name correctly; his name was "BROWN". I thought he was joking or playing a prank, until I looked at his face and he was really serious-- I was heartbroken. That is why I say our problems are not a joke, and I want a viable candidate that will not be made a national spectacle as the first porn-star senator.
