When I asked a gay friend if she would ever get married if it became legal in our state, her reply is para-phrased here:

"Why would I get married? I live with my soul-mate, and have for 10 years, but I could pick up and leave ANY time. Marriage costs money, and divorce costs money, my relationship requires only love."

This was the most sane editorial of any paper I have read. Unlike its bigger counterparts, it has taken a stand for freedom of choice and democracy in a nation that has for too long put limits on people: from the enslavement of Blacks and Indians, to the disenfranchisement of women, and now the second class marginalization of gays and lesbians.

The Daily Herald wrote, sagely: "Same-sex couples do not seek special rights. They should be able to make emergency medical decisions just as married couples do. There are horrific examples of partners being denied access in an emergency. They should have access to state spousal benefits, including survivor benefits. They should be able to file civil actions based on spousal status. They should have the right to control the disposition of remains when a partner dies. They should have the right to share a nursing-home room." The Daily Herald has taken a stand for the rights of all people--to be determined by those involved, not dictated by some religion or other form of bigotry. The Daily Herald makes me proud to be an American, while the evangelical extremists have for too long made me ashamed.
