Feherty

Sweet sassy molassey! A column in the recent issue of D Magazine is freaking everybody out today, and with good reason! It contains the line:

From my own experience visiting the troops in the Middle East, I can tell you this, though: despite how the conflict has been portrayed by our glorious media, if you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it, and he found himself in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Osama bin Laden, there's a good chance that Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice, and Harry Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death.

Here's the amazing part! The column was written by David Feherty, who is best known as CBS' golf analyst. Yes. You read that correctly. CBS' GOLF ANALYST. Talk about a good walk spoiled!

"Mr. Feherty's violent comments about Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid are disgusting," said Media Matters president Eric Burns. "Suggesting that our troops would attack the leaders of the very democracy they've sworn to sacrifice their lives for is an insult to their integrity, honor, and professionalism. CBS Sports should demand its golf analyst apologize to our soldiers."

OK, so: context! The line comes in a larger article about President George W. Bush and wife Laura moving to the Dallas suburb of Preston Hollow, and if I could sum up the theme of Feherty's piece in a sentence, it would be: "I, David Feherty, have an intense loathing of everyone who lives in this community and very soon, President Bush shall know of my pain and despair."

And now, a mea culpa! This article by Feherty is part of a larger collection of ruminations on Bush 43's return to Texas that have been available online for a long time, and which I mentioned back in the beginning of April. Somehow, and I don't remember how, Feherty's contribution to this effort escaped my attention. I sort of feel bad about this now, I can tell you!

Anyway, among the great works of Feherty that I haven't read is a book called An Idiot For All Seasons, so maybe he was encouraged to go for broke, throw every last stitch of intense, crazyfaced emotion he had in him at the page, and managed to strike gold with his insane Nancy Pelosi death fantasy. Here's a Brief and Lamentable Collection of Wackery that didn't quite rise to that level:

...I mean, what a nightmare of a time that was to be president of the United States! His two terms must have felt like the rest of the world had inserted the Washington Monument into him and it was his job to heave it out....

...I hate my neighbors because of their very proximity, or at least I hate the ones that want to talk to me who aren't doctors or gun dealers or who don't have their own airplanes....

...If I have to visit someone, he had better either be in jail or the hospital, and to be honest I'd prefer jail. I do golf commentary on CBS and sometimes star in television commercials wherein I jump on a trampoline while wearing a skirt....

Story continues below

...No, when I make it home, I slam the door behind me and peek out the letterbox to see if I've been spotted by any of the bastards who live nearby....

...Even with their Secret Service entourage, the Bushes are going to be besieged by herds of North Dallas McMansion-dwellers, more brown-nosed and full of BS than any longhorn. Nouveaux riche and face-lifted old-monied fossils alike will descend upon them like ants to the honeypot every time they set foot outside their door....

Feherty also offers us a brief glimpse into his political views:

I believe in the death penalty, especially for pro-lifers, child molesters, those opposed to gay marriage, and for stupid dancing in the end zone. I believe in the abolition of estate taxes and the Pickens Plan. I'd lower the legal drinking age and raise the driving age to 18 nationwide, make Kinky Friedman governor of Texas, and make all schools, public and private, start earlier with one hour of physical exercise.

So there you have it. Now you know what Crash Davis' "I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days" monologue would have sounded like if it had been spoken by a thoroughly insane golf analyst, and not Kevin Costner.

UPDATE: CBS' Sports has responded, calling Feherty's column an "unacceptable attempt at humor."

OK...sometimes it takes me a while to get it but I eventually catch on.

It's not Feherty's Pelosi/Reid/bin Laden remark that is so offensive to the media and blogosphere. No, it was his apparently disrespectful but hardly unwarranted comment about "our glorious media" that has their collective shirt in knot. God bless 'em. Frankly, I’m surprised any of them even got this particular bit of sarcasm.

I don't think you've gotten it yet Liz. I agree that this piece was sarcasm taken too far - way too far. But one flippant comment about "our glorious media" isn't what's gotten everyone's attention. And typically the blogosphere doesn't care about criticism of the media. I mean, come on, the elevator fantasy was too much. I don't always agree with you but I usually see where you're coming from. Not this time.

Maybe I haven’t, lilymarie...God knows, it wouldn’t surprise me.

That was just my own sad attempt at sarcasm - coming from a place where a majority of the media/bloggers/punditocracy are viewed as drowning in their own incompetence and ineptitude. :)

I read the whole article. Why oh why oh why didn't he edit that part out? Why would making a point about how loyal the Military was to Bush have to involve violence against Speaker Pelosi and Sen. Reid? Was his point that indeed the right wing has so villified Pelosi and Reid that an arguable percentage of military personnel can't tell who the enemy is anymore? If it was not a satirical treatment of the "Yer either fer us or agin' us" mentality, then it was a crass and troubling waste of words.

I understand that lots of people disagree with Feherty. So what? Do we really want to start censoring humor? Making fun of politicians is what the First Amendment was supposed to be about. Instead it has become about junk mail and pornography, Every television commentator isn't Jim Nance or Mike Terico and thank God for that. Better to hear some outrageous and idiotic opinions than 24-7 of non-stop ass kissing and propaganda and outright lies.

With all respect, Mr Anthes, but I disagree. I have been a loyal Republican over 60 years, I've supported Gop candidates in local, state and national elections with my money, name and influence, but this man's comments were un called for, inappropraite, out of place, was a put down to our military men and women who come home with P.T.S.D.'s and was DAMN WRONG and he, in my opinion, he owns the military and Senator Pelosi an apology! The GOP is down to less than 1/4 of the nation today for this very reason; people are tired of the hate spewing from the GOP.

I do not condone the killing of someone, but what I am agreeing with is "who in this example is the greater enemy of our country". I think Osama bin Laden is the least of my worries as far as the current crisis the country is in. I think that is what David Feherty was driving at when he make his comment. I think it was all tongue & cheek and a wake up call to where our country is headed. Is our greater enemy already within our country? Let's wake up America before it's too late.

You meant to say, David speaks for the 21% of questionable Americans who hate our President and are waiting, with drool running out of the corners of their collective tea bag ging mouths, for disaster to strike- in any form- be it in foreign policy, a crash of the stock market, or successful Dijon Mustard smear-campaign- so that the GOP can swoop in and regain its 'right'ful place, continuing the decline of our civilization, and the destruction of what's left of the Middle Class.

I think in a day, when we have people walking around with guns shooting innocent people in workplaces, universities and other public places, it is ridiculous and a poor use of free speech, to talk about killing a public figure for whatever reason. And what is it about these men who cannot take a woman in high office with power who has the guts to flex some muscle. I am not always fond of Nancy Pelosi's choices and I know her personally. But nothing she does rises to the level of talking about Amercan soldiers killing her. If you will remember, men behaved very similarly about Mrs. Clinton...what is this man hate?

Yeah, so, who cares? It's not a crime to be an idiot, or most of us would do time at one point or another in our lives. This is the type of thing which can best be dealt with by public shunning, not any resort to law.

The Idea that the Military is solidly republican is HOGWASH!

"Overall the majority voted for McCain, but it was a slim majority. Obama won 46% to McCain's 50%; the remaining 4% going to 3rd parties."

"Add to those grumblings the economic, emotional and physical hardships endured by families and friends of the 160,000-plus National Guard and reservists called up from their civilian lives and deployed overseas to help fight the global war on terrorism and the once solid GOP voting bloc of the military could be in play, some experts say."

And there it is. Reserve and Guard didn't plan on doing this every day of the year. They signed up for the "one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer" military. Does that make them any less patriotic? No. Does that make them more likely to not want to be in the business of war for an extended time? Probably. Who has said they would get them home? Obama. Most times 2+2=4. You just have to be willing to do the math.

The reason most of the troops hate Pelosi is because she has been the target of non stop negative Right Wing Propaganda. Talk Radio and Fox news have given her the same treatment as Hillary Clinton and any other leader in the Democrat Party. Most Americans see through this but the majority of our troops unfortunately are in a sad demographic. They are mostly, religious, conservative, country boys who are the most likely to believe absolutely anything. They desperately need the "Right Wing Deprogrammer".

Wow, you are completely wrong. Take a look here. You'll find that the military is far more educated than the civilian populace. For example, less than 1% of the military fail to have a HS diploma, while 21% of the civilian population failed to graduate HS. Less than half the 2007 recruiting class came from the south, and most came from middle to high income families.
But, hey, why let facts ruin your really good story, right?

The military blocks youtube because it didn't like criticism of the war. It created a replacement called trooptube but the troops were too lefty so they started blocking it too.

This raises many questions but one I have is why would the military hate Pelosi so much? Did she not fund the troops? Did she question the job the troops were doing? Someone on either side help me with this perception.

Well, my original observation was; "Pelosi must be loathed by most military people, because they live with rules and accountability, and could never get away with hairsplitting semantic excuses for not fulfilling THEIR duties."

But you're dealing with a bit of irony that is not widely recognized, in that Pelosi announced she would not be holding the other side accountable as soon as she gained power, whereas they're treating her like she waged war on them unjustifiably.

Gee, could it be the horrendous and undeserved treatment our military and military recruiters receive from her constituents almost daily in San Francisco/area without ever a peep from her in their defense and right to exist.

Why is it wingnuts insist on changing the subject, every single time? It's so middle-skool. "Never mind that story- look what so-and-so did!" And so much of it is completely fabricated and hypothetical. Y'all have interesting fantasy lives, that's for sure- even for as unimaginative and satrirically-challenged as wingnut nation is.

David Feherty, wannabe soldier, composer of fables.

Next book: Foolish Feherty Finally Fired?

But first, I have some questions for you regarding this recent little foible of yours:

(1) Why the two-bullet rage against Pelosi?

(2) Why impugn the entire U.S. Army by dragging them into your little tableau -- aren't these guys your heroes?

(3) Why no bullet for bin Laden, the guy who took our country to this political, geographical, and financial morass?

Oh, wait -- you courageously invaded a magazine column so you could sidle up to W.

What a patriot!

It's the "D-as-in-Dallas" Magical Legacy Tour, and you're just too F-listed to want to miss out. Good luck getting that bike ride.
