While guest hosting Bill Bennett's radio show Friday, Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele gave his own perspective on whether a Supreme Court Justice should have "empathy." President Obama said on the campaign trail that it was a quality he would look for in a nominee. Via ThinkProgress:

"Good morning y'all, we're back in the house. We're talking a little bit of Constitution and a little bit Supreme Court. And a whole lot of saving America's judicial system and saving our rights as citizens and not having empathetic judges decide cases, but rather judges who are actually understanding the rule of law and what the Constitution and those laws are all about. And how to apply the facts to the law and the law to the facts. And adjudicate my case. I don't need some judge sitting up there feeling bad for my opponent because of their life circumstances or their condition. And short changing me and my opportunity to get fair treatment under the law. Crazy nonsense empathetic. I'll give you empathy. Empathize right on your behind. Craziness."

Listen :

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) recently suggested "empathy" was code for judicial activism. Obama's full quote on the issue:

You know, Justice Roberts said he saw himself just as an umpire. But the issues that come before the court are not sport. They're life and death. And we need somebody who's got the heart to recogni-- the empathy to recognize what it's like to be a young, teenaged mom; the empathy to understand what it's like to be poor or African-American or gay or disabled or old. And that's the criteria by which I'm going to be selecting my judges.

Earlier this week, the "Daily Show" mocked Republicans' aversion to empathetic judges. Watch:

According to spokesman Robert Gibbs, "the president is looking for somebody with a record of excellence, with a record of integrity, somebody who understand the rule of law, and somebody who understands how being a judge affects everyday lives."

According to ABC News, Obama has formalized his short list.

This man is a joke, but then again he is the leader of a pack of clowns. They deserve each other and the deeper they go into this hole of derision and delusion the better it is for the country, they are cementing their irrelevancy. Keep up the good work Michael, you are appreciated by a large majority of the country.

Someone please remind Steele that no matter how slangish he tries to talk, he's still an old republican and nobody's buying it. Go back into that bag of disguises and come up with something more believeable. How about a mime? That way he won't be talking.

I know he is trying to reach out to young listeners, but he is using dated slang. Also the fact he is using slang gives his message less creditability in the first place. It is almost like Gov. Bobby J's (can't spell his last name and yes i used a form of slang) response to Pres. Obama's State of the Union address. Part of me wants to help the Republicans get back on track because it is almost getting painful to watch them run around like chickens with their heads cut off.

It never gets old watching these Republicans self destruct. Lots of poor people sicken and eventually die without treatment because they're too proud to go to the emergency room. That's fine with the non-empathetic Republcan neo-coms, as long as their CEO friends in the medical and pharmaceutical industry keep getting their multi-million dollar salaries and bonuses.

Steele just plain don't realize,
that it ain't wise to extemporize
or theorize about the size
of other's thighs.Best he open up his eyes
and emphasize some other lies
lest his party soon despise, and we'll
all have to empathize, as Steele is saying as he cries
with your Big Mac do you want fries?

What is his problem? Why does Steele refuse to speak in a professional manner? Also, the president graduated at the best law school in our country, as the law review editor-in-chief, and taught constitutional law, after working on civil rights issues, which are predicated on constitutional/federal law issues. I'm confident the president knows far more about American history and the history of the Supreme Court than Michael Steele would any day, or for that matter, than any of his critics.

Some people have no respect for other people's knowledge and professional experience.

The one reason that I choose who I vote for is because of the Presidents power to appoint SCJOTUS, President Obama, appoint the most empathetic Justice you can find.

Cons weren't upset when the supreme court empathized with Bush in 2000 despite the lack of legal merit to his case

Some commenting on this post have referred to Mr. Steele as a "tool." I don't know about that. I don't think he is any more than a "tool pouch."

The joke's over. I'm tired of laughing over the GOP. It's not funny any more. They just make us all look like idiots.
