MoveOn Targets Specter And Other Dems For Siding With Banks (VIDEO)

First Posted: 06/08/09 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:20 PM ET

A series of new web ads by MoveOn.org targets Senate Democrats for stripping a provision from recently-passed bankruptcy reform legislation that would have allowed judges in certain circumstances to change the terms of a mortgage.

The biggest target among those Dems: Arlen Specter, the Pennsylvania turncoat. MoveOn says a new poll finds 85 percent of its Pennsylvania membership aren't charmed by Specter's party switch and might favor a primary challenger.

Six other Democrats are targeted in videos for their opposition to the provision, known as cramdown, which would have offered relief to certain homeowners in bankruptcy and in default on their mortgage. The measure failed after lobbying by the financial industry so intense that Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said of the upper chamber that banks "frankly own the place."

"Last week Senator Specter had a choice," says the ad targeting Specter. "Wall Street was trying to kill the president's proposal to help families facing foreclosure. Senator Specter could side with the banks or with Pennsylvania families..."

Each ad points out how much money the targeted Dem received from the financial industry.

This is great, but now we have to target Harry Reid, Ed Rendell, and President Obama for bringing Arlen Specter into the Democratic Party.

Good for Moveon. Every single one of them, Dem and Rethug should be held accountable. No exceptions.

Could not agree more, each party should clean their own houses before they worry about the other side. Plenty of internal blame to go around.

Specter is a Democrat and I'm the Wizard of Oz.
You can't paint Racin' Stripes on the shell of a Turtle and get the poor thing to start winning races on the Rabbit.
Ain't goin' tuh happen.
Specter has already been demoted by the Dem's for his Norm Coleman and Jewish Senator's remarks.
Specter is a Democrat because he's all washed-up as a Republican.
His State grew tired of The Honorable Gentleman's act and he faced a Primary Election.
He just ran his tired, lame, act across the aisle and "Plucked the Magic Twanger" for Froggy and got made Democrat.
He can't even get himself to have new Business Cards made-out saying he's a Democrat.
I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw a big, fat envelope full of bribe money.
Or, ... to be standing anywhere close to where a thrown envelope of bribe money might land and not expect to get trampled.

Sen. Arlen Specter was a member of the good old republican party between early 1966 and April 28, 2009. As a republican, Sen. Specter did what all good republicans do—stand up for big business at the expense of the people. And yes, financial institutions gave Specter the big bucks for being a good, big business loving, republican.

Sen. Specter has but 11 days as a democrat; before MoveOn.org goes after Sen. Specter, they need to first clarify where he is going to land on these domestic issues as a democrat—and not make assumptions about him based on his past affiliations as a republican.

Well... Democrats stand up for Big Wall Street at the expense of the people... what's your point?

And you're right about MoveOff... this ad was probably made while he was still a Rethug, because he was/is not going to support EFCA.

This is how the left operates... smear anyone who opposes their legislation. I wonder who's next on their black|ist.

Democrats stand up for Big Wall Street? Ha, ha, ha, ha....

Only slightly less than Republicans.

MoveOn represents the American people. Where are the rightie organizations that are taking a stand for the people? Oh, wait. That's right. They don't exist.

About your question regarding "systems of government", how about a government that actually represents its constituents? Liberals and conservatives need to get together and demand term limits and campaign reform. It's time to vote career politicians out of office. The Arlen Specters and Diane Feinsteins of Congress need to retire.

Let's have a government that isn't for sale to Big Oil, Big Pharma, Big Ag, Big Finance, Big Defense, etc., etc., etc. Let's have a government where these corporate interests aren't writing legislation for their benefit at the taxpayer expense.

Here in Europe the parliament elections are coming up and if we would see such and advertisement on tv we would be shocked by the way on how they are trying to bring this person into a corner of corrupt. The way the U.S. elections are played has more to do with another reality soap than with real politics.

I wonder if MoveOn will make an ad like this about Obama taking the most campaign money from Wall Street?

What's good for the goose is good for the proper-gander...

If the democrats had been in power 8 years filled with blunders and crimes like Bush just had, Wall Street would have backed a republican instead. No matter who is in office, the corps and the banks own him and both parties. So what is your point again? Oh yeah I forgot, you never have a point!

"coin that"? Did you mean mint coins with the phrase on them?

Otherwise you are being redundant in that by stating it you have already "coined that" - "to make; invent; fabricate as in 'to coin an expression'. "

Perhaps you meant you want to copyright that?

And, really?? " . . . ooo," Are you also talking to your computer as you type or just mouthing the words as you read them?
