Star Trek

"Star Trek" stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Quinto's Spock predecessor Leonard Nimoy surprised fans when they showed up on "Saturday Night Live's" Weekend Update.

Pine and Quinto were on to respond to criticism that the new film, with the tag line "This Isn't Your Father's Star Trek," is too much a departure from the originals.

Addressing disgruntled Trekkies in the front row (Bobby Moynihan and Keenan Thompson) the new Captain Kirk and Spock pleaded with "Star Trek" fans to stop harassing them before Nimoy then came on to offer his support.

Meanwhile the new "Star Trek" film is having a huge opening weekend.

I've seen the movie twice. Once with my husband, who has never been a fan of anything Star Trek related until this movie. And I took my niece and nephew to see it a week later. They all loved it.
I thought Spock/Uhura added a element of surprise to this movie. We all expected to see amazing special effects, but who knew that the element of "romance" would come in the form of Spock/Uhura. The logical, always proper and logical Spock character is written outside the character's traditional box by being involved with a former student. And Uhura who, while she was always written as intelligent and professional, but she was the sexy female of the original show, picks Spock as her lover. Many of us long time Trek watchers figured that honor would belong to Caption Kirk. Giving that role to Spock had people in the theater actually saying out loud "oh my God" at the scene in the air lift. As for the non-sense about Uhura being written below the usual standards, this character's intelligence was more than obvious to anyone that actually paid attention. I think Spock/Uhura may become the franchise couple for the next Star Trek movie. I hope so anyway.

I love trek. and I love how time travel is so convenient for explaining things away, Like Why is the Enterprise in Kirks youth more advanced than the 1969 enterprise of the older Kirk?

After Kirks father's ship is destroyed a new time line was created. In the new time line they advanced more rapidly than in the original time line.

Boy, I really am a geek

Its a movie sit back and enjoy it!! Stop nitpicking- the studio did a great job both to make trekkers happy and to make money. Making movies isn't just an art its also a way to make money.Dont be stuck in the past after all its Star Trek all about moving in to the future. Just enjoy it for what it is.

My husband and I went to the 9 May shows and was blown away - it was a good movie and made better as it was defined as an AU. HOWEVER, I did find much to be desired with the Uhura/Spock thing. Nichelle Nichols spent DECADES ensuring that Uhura was taken as a serious, intelligent, and professional officer, and now we have Uhura SC$$$$ Spock. I beg your pardon??

Firstly, she's his student at the Academy. WRONG
Secondly, she's uses that to get a place on the Enterprise - WRONG
Thirdly, she's sc$$$ the CO. WRONG
Fourthly, the ONLY time her opinion is requested, SPOCK confirms it. The person she's sc$$$$. WRONG
Fifthly, She's making out with the person in FRONT OF THE CO on the transporter pad. Yeah Right.
Sixthly, she's an embarrassment to all women in the military. We work long and hard to be taken seriously and this Uhura takes that all away.

I'm disappointed in Paramount. You think women in the military are sleeping with their CO's?

And yes, in the Roddenbury world, women are equal. Not sc##### their CO's. They're intelligent, capable, and kick a##, and don't need to sc### their professors and CO's.

Disappointed. If men need this type of behavior, then Pen$$$ has movies for them. The world is different.

Ah this is not a military service. Military actions are part of their roles but they have a lot of science people working for them as well as civilians.

She is young and guess what it's a different time line. Uhura when she was shown in the Original Series would have had over a decade of time in Star Fleet. Not a few days on a ship. Also as Spock said she was qualified but he didnt' want to appear to show favoritism which would reflect badly on her. Since she was okay with that apperance Spock transfered to what she was really qualified for. There was nothing romantic prior to then.

She didn't screw Kirk it was her roommate.

Why wouldn't Spock confirm her opionion if it is accurate? It would not be logical to deny it.

She wasn't exactly making out and no one else raised an issue meaning the rules are relaxes. The only people that take a chasitiy oath in the Star Fleet are from races where a sexual relationship with other races would have consequences such as death or serious injury due to biological incompatability.

You leave one very important thing out of the equation, Spock and Uhura were in love. When they thought that they would no longer be together, they openly displayed their feelings for each other. That was the important arch in their storyline. Sorry for the spoilers to all who did not see the film yet.

Huh. I never thought of it like that.

I guess you have a point, but geez. It's a movie. Take a breath.

It's a movie! LOL!!! *rolls eyes*

I loved that they were in a relationship! These things happen. I dated someone I worked with so I know. And I thought the scene in the elevator when she went to console him was lovely and full of emotion. So well done. It is possible to be in a relationship AND be intelligent, capable etc. No where in the film did it imply that Uhura wasn't...and it's not the military...it's Star Trek...

I liked that they were in a relationship, but I was mightily disappointed with Saldana's portrayal of Uhura, even a younger one. Uhura always considered herself equal to the men on the bridge, and I never got that from this actress. The relationship with Spock would also have had a better dynamic if she wasn't so pouty (Why am I not on the Enterprise? I wanna be on the Enterprise! Whaaa!).

It's a movie.

If you expect a film character to behave as a real woman in the military would, then you're expecting way too much.

Was a great movie and better than I expected, this should get the franchise going strong again and I'll be looking forward to future ones that may better explain was this an alternate time line created in the prime universe or a different parallel universe? I was a bit skeptical at first being a long time trek fan myself, but after seeing the Kobayashi Maru scene I really started getting into it. The only real fault I find with the movie is its too short so it has to be very fast paced. I know that may not be realistic, but make it 3 hours, a quick 5-10 minute break during the movie to allow for more dialogue and storytelling. It would help clear up unanswered questions, and help us know what direction the new trek movies will go, or a series if they start a new one. Anyone that enjoys this kind of sci-fi movie would be willing to do that I'd think and it would add much more to the lore.

You always have the tie ins as well as dvd release to fill in the gaps.

As for it being an alternatte universe depends on the time travel mechanic. A parallel universe could have been created or the original completly wiped out. Doesn't exactly matter does it?

I love all of JJ Abrams work - been a fan since Alias... but was a little nervous about this. I'm a Star Wars fanatic first and sorry George, but this film is soooooo much better than the I-III...but that's another debate. I didnt like the previews of Kirk but I'm sooo glad I was wrong. I knew Sylar would be a great spock and was correct. Kirk is supposed to be the ladies' man but Spock stole that title!!! I like his relationship with Uhura - in this alternate reality, Spock's isnt afraid to get with a sistah! : ) Gittem, GIRL!

Girl! I was like, "Sylar was a fine cat, but Zack Quinto make Spock kinda sexy!". I love the scene where he and Uhura are semi-seriously making out and Kirk is all surprised and like, "Uh, so her name is..." right before Spock cuts him off like, "You don't want none of this. It ain't ya bizness!"

Giving Spock a love interest, especially when its Uhura, is great. They could have made it anybody. I also love that Uhura wasn't just eye candy. Chick was intelligent, ambitious, and loving.

This was Spock's movie. Its about time!

I wish he'd been in more! It was one of those movies I wish was LOTR-length - when it ended, I could easily have stayed on for another hour, especially if McCoy appeared frequently - armed, especially, with The Syringe!

It was a typical stupid movie from the writing team of Transformers and Legend of Zorro.
These writers dont care about coherent plots or characters, their job is to put the fx sequences on paper that have already been planned(we need an alien planet, we need a planet exploding).

If they write a memorable line of dialogue its an accident.
Give the movie a few weeks or months. Once the wow factor wears off, people will begin to realize its all air.

I like Star Trek, but it has become just a corporate merchandising vehicle, even though Roddenberry had loftier artistic goals in mind when he created it.
I have heard people say its in the same league as Transformers, so a show that started out with Harlan Ellison as a writer is now the equivalent of a toy commercial.
That's progress for you.

I'm with you. It's one of this movies I wouldn't want to watch a second time and this even as it is a Star Trek movie.

The lines/scenes that were supposed to be funny (for example with the dumb version of Mr. Scot and that Star Wars-like alien) reminded me of Transformers and I found them as dumb as the first time. With the Legend of Zorro I also connect a very annoying sense of humor.

My hope is this timeline will be corrected and I never have to watch it again. My fear is that they continue with the writers of Xena.

This is the new franchise. Deal with it. No one cares about your bellyaching people love the movie. You remind me of that old farside strip about the people who didn't like dances with wolves having a meeting and there were only four people.

I've been a Trek fan for nearly my entire life, seen all its permutations and
I'm glad I didn't stick to my plan of not seeing this one. I was happy with what I saw
including Pine's Kirk, which is saying a lot because it took me many years to actually
like the original Kirk. Quinto as Spock was spot on. I personally liked the
interaction between the characters. I just don't see the need to always compare
every little thing detail to the previous shows. So, its not like the first, well get over
it and as Shatner once said, "Get a life".

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:53 PM on 05/11/2009

Little detail? That's certainly the view of the authors of the movie, but this details are no details. Their the basics of all series except the extremely crappy one (Enterprise, season 1-3 and its final episode of the the 4th season).

I saw the movie last night and was very pleased! If they had stayed too faithful to the show's history it wouldn't have made a good movie anyway! I was a die-hard trek fan in my younger years and I cannot wait to see more like this... And Nimoy is right with his parting comment!

A very fun movie! I think it was easily as good as or better than any of the previous episodes. It has a lot of action and a lot of heart, and it's pretty intelligent as well. I'll be looking forward to the next one, for sure.

Part of the problem with the Star Trek movie is that some of the "reinvented" characters come across as modern cliches. Bad boy James Kirk has to be EXTREME! He drives cars fast! He's a frat boy lech! He doesn't play by the rules! Uhura is the spunky firebrand. Scotty is the goofy comic relief (as much as I liked Simon Pegg in the role).

In addition, the message of the film is that you must sometimes be willing to overcome logic and reasoning so that you can murder the right people.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:42 AM on 05/11/2009

You got the message wrong.

Also this James T Kirk didn't have a strong role model in his early life so he rebelled due to the image people had of him as a result of his father. James T Kirk always had the streak of rebellion in him.
