***UPDATE*** The Associated Press reveals more details about the shooter:

The suspect had been disarmed after an earlier incident at the center but returned with another weapon, according to a senior military official in Washington, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation into the shootings was ongoing.

***UPDATE*** The American soldier who shot dead five fellow soldiers at a U.S. base in Baghdad is in custody.

"The shooter is a US soldier and he is in custody," US marine corps lieutenant Tom Garnett, a US military spokesman in Iraq, told reporters.

The New York Times adds some perspective to the tragedy:

The killings appeared to be the worst case of soldier-on-soldier violence among the American forces based in Iraq since the invasion more than six years ago.

The shootings, which took place at a stress clinic, highlight the problem of post-traumatic stress disorder among U.S. soldiers, notes the Guardian:

Stress is one of the biggest killers of US soldiers in Iraq. About a fifth of all US troops are thought to be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, contributing to high divorce and suicide rates. An estimated one fifth of the 4,292 members of the US force in Iraq have died from non-combat causes, either in accidents or from suicide.

***UPDATE*** According to Fox News, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs Monday relayed President Obama's response to the tragedy. Obama expressed shock and sadness and is promising to fully investigate what exactly transpired at Camp Liberty, so as to prevent such incidents in the future.

***UPDATE*** AP has another update. The shooting was at a 'stress clinic':

Pentagon officials say five Americans are dead after a U.S. soldier opened fire at a U.S. base in Baghdad. They say the attacker is in custody.

The officials say the shootings happened on Camp Liberty at a stress clinic, where troops can go for help with the stresses of combat or stress from personal issues.

One senior military official in Washington says it's unclear whether those killed are workers at the clinic or were there for counseling. He says officials also are unsure whether all the dead are members of the military.

***UPDATE*** ABC News reports that the U.S. soldier who attacked fellow troops on a U.S, base in Iraq has killed five of them and is now in custody. Initial reports suggested that he had turned the gun on himself after his rampage.

***UPDATE*** AP now reports that the U.S. soldier who went on a rampage against his fellow troops in Iraq may have survived the incident:

Pentagon officials say five U.S. soldiers are dead after an American soldier opened fire at a U.S. base in Baghdad.

The officials say the shootings happened Monday at Camp Liberty near Baghdad's airport.

One senior military official in Washington said it was not yet clear whether the shooter was among the dead. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the circumstances surrounding the deaths are under investigation.

Initial reports indicated the Army soldier shot several others, then turned the gun on himself. But it was unclear whether he, too, had died.

***UPDATE*** CNN reports that 3 other U.S. soldiers were wounded during the friendly fire incident that has left 5 U.S. troops dead. An American soldier killed 4 of his fellow troops before killing himself.

According to the Washington Post, it is the single greatest loss of life in a single incident involving U.S. soldiers since a truck bomb last month took the lives of 5 American soldiers.

***UPDATE*** CNN has just sent out a breaking news alert reporting that senior defense officials have told the network that a US soldier killed 4 of his fellow troops before killing himself. Check back for more information.

McClatchy is reporting that a shooting at a U.S. base in Baghdad has left 5 soldiers dead. The shooting occurred at Camp Liberty, a base near the Baghdad airport.

Check back for more information.

And many of these folks are coming back home all traumatized and ultra-violent. Apparently, war doesn't seem to do anybody much good, except for the profiteers.

PTSD, and not to mention all the pharmaceuticals they're being pumped with.

I believe most of you were against the war to begin with, so the feigned sympathy for our volunteer soldiers is unnecessary. We all signed on the dotted line as volunteers (even those who are stop lossed) and don't do it to impress you.

If you recall, the same thing happened at Fairchild AFB in Washington 1994. No war, no GWB and no deployments to blame it on. A young airman had just been told (rightly apparently) that he wasn't fit for military service.

Another "GWB apologist" has joined us on HuffPo.

Everybody give him a big welcome please. Nice moniker btw!

So, WE ALL SIGNED ON THE DOTTED LINE? Has someone voted you as their spokesman? Did I miss an election? Who are you, that you feel that you can somehow speak for the thousands of Soldiers who have been killed, wounded, and damaged by this war?

You're right, of course, that everyone signed on the dotted line. I feel I can confidently say that MOST had NO IDEA that they could be "stop-lossed" and I believe I can also state with a certain amount of confidence that the vast majority of National Guard and Reservists didn't realize that they could be activated and sent on MULTIPLE TOURS for 8 consecutive years. As a regular reader of the Army Times, I can' t help but believe that the Soldiers who have lost their careers, homes, families and friends as a result of this war DIDN"T REALIZE that those things were also part of their obligation to the Nation.

After that little trek into "delusions of grandeur-land" you go on to compare a situation where an obviously "Mentally Ill" airman went on a rampage for no rational reason to this situation where an obviously "Mentally Ill" Soldier who was being treated by a Mental Health Facility under a Command Referral, in a Combat Zone after MULTIPLE TOURS IN IRAQ? Are you kidding?

Really?

That there is no reasonable basis for comparison, should be obvious to even the most obtuse eye. The similarities of the end result, and the fact that they were both service-members, is all they have in common. To conclude that they are therefore comparable is ludicrous.

You might as well compare a "car-thief" to a "repo-man" if you only need a couple of corollaries to arrive at your conclusion. Both are professionals and both take peoples cars. Must be the same, right?

Really?

BTW: What unit, and when did YOU sign up?

uhh, the draft ended in 1975, where have you been?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:42 AM on 05/14/2009

My analogy is much more accurate than comparing Iraq and Afghanistan to Vietnam. The class warfare that erupted during Vietnam was the result of draftees being sent to fight a war - while kids with money could get deferments by going to college.

Are you seriously suggesting that people join the military not knowing they could be sent to war? "Stop loss" or its equivalent has existed since WWII and Korea. It was utilized during Cuban missile crisis, Berlin wall, etc.

I believe that you are likely NOT in the Military, and if you are NO ONE has given you permission to speak FOR THEM, so the feigned self-righteousness and demeaning of SINCERE individuals is NOT accepted.

Nice ASSumptions. It was a dumb war, and I'm sure you've paid heavily for it. A lot of us in this country don't know about war, since most of us aren't drafted into the military to fight anymore.
We didn't understand your quarrel with the Iraqi people. They never attacked us, so why did we go in there? Saudi Arabian lunatics attacked us on 9/11. They are stronger than ever, BTW, and we never found Bin Laden.
the Iraq War was a huge distraction to the true fight in Afghanistan to capture Bin Laden. If we never attacked Iraq, can you imagine how much more attention we could have given to Bin Laden?
Now the trail is cold, our country is broke, we invaded the wrong nation, and tens of thousands of people are dead in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan. Good luck to you. An old soldier once said, "One war per customer." Sorry this was yours.

The insanity of war leads to more insanity. This poor guy was on this THIRD tour of duty in Iraq and finally cracked. I am sorry for the families of those he shot, and for his family, and for him. Bush and company should be tried for their malfeasance and forced to join the Army or Marines as PRIVATES in the infantry, then sent to experience first-hand the mess they created.

No wonder the commander in chief won the election. The people that elected him are going to continue to 'blame Bush' throughout his entire term. No matter what he does, it will be Bush's fault. Ok. In 4 years when the country is bankrupt, it will not matter who's fault it was, it will still be bankrupt. It is time to open your eyes. Problems have solutions and finger pointing does not equal work.

What insanity. Bush IS responsible!!! He not only killed thousands at home and abroad, he bankrupted this nation. If we don't recover, he STILL is responsible for all of that and more. I have thin hopes that Obama can pull us out of the mess Bush made of everything - war, the economy, law, etc. How you can shift the blame to this administration is beyond credibility!

Just to point out the obvious; WE BLAMED BUSH for the entire time he was in office, electing a new President has nothing at all to do with WHO STARTED ALL THIS MESS IN THE FIRST PLACE.

If you don't realize that the disastrous policies that certainly contributed to this tragedy were put in place years ago, if you don't realize that the callous indifference to the suffering of our Military members was prevalent throughout "W's" reign, if you don't realize that most of the problems this nation faces are directly related to Bush decisions, you have either spent the past 8 years with your head in the sand or you are one of the "mutant" sheeple.

The guy who empties your trash isn't responsible for having created it!

Why are we continuing this insane war in Iraq? Obama has decided to keep it going and enlarge another war in Afghanistan. The troops are all sick and so is the treasury. Where does it end and why do we constantly have to be engaged in war. What kind of leadership do we have that permits this to go on??

I agree, get our people out and let the chips fall where they may. The UK and USSR learned the hard way that you can not fix those places. This is turning into a contest like who will bring peace to the middle east.

Republicans will say this is all the fault of one "Bad Apple."

It's a horrible thing for the families personally involved, they'll say -- but then note that we haven't been in attacked in 7 and a half years! They'll point to the "Big Picture" and justify the death and personal destruction as minor. These particular families may have to suffer, but WE haven't been hit by terrorists -- and as Donald Rumsfeld once put it:

"Freedom is untidy and free people are free to make mistakes and commit crimes and do bad things."

As Carl von Clausewitz said "War is a continuation of `policy'—or of `politics'—by other means." and "We the people" have a say via the election of our leaders. If all continue to say that this war is unjust, then why do people continue to elect leaders who support this policy? Until such time as we elect leaders who will end this war, the volunteers of our military will continue to be placed in harms way as an extension of our countries policy/politics. To continue to rail against the war, but elect leaders who support it is nothing short of hypocrisy.

Young men, women and family members (the silent soilder) continue to bear the burden of our spend thrift unworried and lavish habits.

The question I put to all is when was the last time this country fully mobilized for war and physically and economicly contributed to the success of the military mission which results in the success of the politics of this country?

That is far too easy!

The last DECLARED war, was WWII.

Without a declared war, why should the citizens be bothered?

Ike was right!

This was a preventable tragedy. We need to de-stigmatize mental illness and get real about its cost in our military. We must have insurance for full diagnosis and treatment of mental illness in the military as well as for our returning veterans. Good healthcare at home for both veterans and citizens includes the recognition that returning warriors are not only physically damaged, but mentally damaged by what we ask of them. The current discussion about healthcare must make a priority of full coverage for illnesses that manifest in behavior and mentation.

That would be a good start. A conclusive way to prevent fragging is to stop using our young people as human battering rams and killing machines. We only do it out of stupidity, to push our influence around the world because talking and negotiating are too hard. Misuse of human beings as instrumentalities of destruction creates terrible damage to the soldiers and their families for generations.

I saw a generation of returning Viet Nam Viets. Some were so strung out on drugs they ended in suicide. Others became so brutalized they beat their families up. Others died young from chronic or fatal illnesses caused by contact with the poisons and chemicals we use as weapons of war. I have seen this and so have you. Why do we keep doing this to our own young people?

This isn't about mental illness - it is about sending our troops to too many deployments, stop-lossing them and keeping them fighting in an war that will never end.

You take ANYONE and force them into going back again and again, well after their enlistment contract should have expired, let them lose their home and job and family and they'll go postal.

We are not treating our soldiers legally nor humanely. Stop loss is wrong, wrong, wrong. Sending our national guard and reserves overseas for 7+ years is wrong, wrong, wrong. These people signed up to protect their own state in an emergency or invasion - NOT to be deployed forever.

Although I disagree with some of your points, you are absolutely right about our national guard being stop-loss'ed to death.

It's one thing to keep an enlisted, full time solider over there, they completely understood what they were doing when they signed up. However these guardsmen are being taken advantage of.

That's why President Obama ENDED stop-loss last month.

Not soon enough for this unfortunate individual, but perhaps it will preclude future tragedies.

It saddens me that things like this happen. It is only compounded by the fact doctors have come forward and said on the record they have been pressured to avoid the PTSD diagnosis. My father fought in the Vietnam war as a medic and served two tours. Until the day he died, he suffered horrendous nightmares, panic attacks and an unfathomable guilt over all the lives he could not save and those that were taken. He was diagnosed with PTSD and received pretty decent care from the VA hospital here in town. My point is....even with decent care, he barely eked by emotionally. I cannot imagine the weight of emotion that rests on our soldier's shoulders and hearts every second of every day. The higher ups in the military fail to recognize these men as human and seem to feel that because they are trained soldiers, they are no longer emotional beings. War takes a toll on EVERYONE and I wish our military did more to assist these men and women in not just merely "integrating" into civilian society, but reconciling the emotional aftermath of the most traumatic times of their lives. They are risking their lives for the freedom of others...we owe them.
