American Idol's Final Three: How Did They Do?

NEW YORK — The pressure is on for Danny Gokey, Kris Allen and Adam Lambert.

There's just one week until the "American Idol" finale, and on Tuesday night the all-male trio competed for two spots in next week's much-hyped sing-off.

They each performed two songs, one picked by the judges' panel and the other chosen by themselves.

It was a last chance to make an impression on the voting viewers. Now, the aspiring pop stars await the verdict on Wednesday's results show.

As usual, Lambert wowed the panel with his daring vocal range and style. He sang the U2 anthem "One" _ Simon Cowell's selection _ and his personal choice: the Aerosmith classic "Crying."

"How do you hit those notes and still talk the next day?" asked Kara DioGuardi, one of the four judges on the top-rated Fox network competition.

Jumping in on the Lambert lovefest, Paula Abdul gushed: "We'll be seeing you next week and many years after that."

Not so fast, warned Cowell. The judge shrewdly noted that people should vote for the 27-year-old theater actor and not assume he's a shoo-in for the final showdown.

Strong performances by Gokey and Allen on Tuesday could challenge the expectation that Lambert _ who appears on the latest cover of Entertainment Weekly _ has the "Idol" crown in the bag.

Allen of Conway, Ark., was the only finalist to select a contemporary song _ "Heartless" by Kanye West. DioGuardi praised Allen's cool interpretation of the R&B hit as "bold, brave and fearless," while Cowell revealed he'd written the married 23-year-old out of the competition until that performance.

Cowell and DioGuardi got into a spat over Allen earlier in the show. DioGuardi and Randy Jackson picked One Republic's "Apologize" for Allen, and Cowell complained the song was a "lame choice." Things turned ugly when Cowell zeroed in on DioGuardi, who had urged Allen to "take more chances" following his faithful cover of the pop hit.

"You can't choose a song for him and then blame him for the song," sniped Cowell, before DioGuardi covered up his mouth with her hand.

Gokey, 28, of Milwaukee, received high marks for his cover of Joe Cocker's version of "You Are So Beautiful." The panel thought he nailed it, and Cowell's praise was the icing on top: "I would call that a vocal master class."

Gokey's dancing, however, was another story during his rendition of Terence Trent D'Arby's "Dance Little Sister," chosen by Abdul.

DioGuardi said his "gyrating" was too much for her, while Cowell described Gokey's footwork in a word: "desperate."

Not that Gokey seemed to care.

"I want to sing that song!" he said.

Danny's fan base is going to Kris. There was only 1 mill votes between the top two. Do the math. Adam deserves it and Kris will win it unless Adam's fan base goes nuts on voting night.

Kris is a fine musician and arranger but his voice is NOT a gift. He is forced to strain and sometimes loses his voice and clarity in higher registers. He is a "cutie" but the transformative power of Love does not flow through his voice as does Adam's gift. Also, Kris lacks the energy and Charisma to be able to "hold" an auditorium. He will be a song writer/arranger and play small rooms. He is NOT a "star."

To those who question the greatness of Adam's singing abilities -- thinking that he is "a screamer," please google the "studio" (recording) full versions of his "Feeling Good," "Mad World, " "One" and whichever others you like. There is also a video on line of him singing a lovely Hebrew song at a Jewish gathering. OMG, he is a "music man" for sure. I am a wonderful singer myself and I tell you, Adam will be one of the greats. He is even more fortunate in that he is androgynous and can pull equally on both the "male" and "female" (or "yang" and "yin") aspects of his voice and artistic expression. I also notice that he selects songs that have social and personal messages for humankind. I think he must be a fine human being. May God help the misled, hate-filled Christians who seek to persecute him because he is who he is. Though I was raised Christian and continue to respect and attempt to live by the teachings of Christ, I am totally disgusted with violence and intolerance of religions. In the U.S., Christianity has been used against Blacks, Amer-Indians (all Asians), Jews, Muslims, women, same-sex relationships, etc. Please stop it from poisoning yet another another generation.

Kate Perry openly supported Adam.

What do you think about this?

While I am certainly a fan of Lambert talent and vote for his consistantly, I do not think this display was appropriate.

Adam wasn't successful prior to this, he had small parts in stage productions. Do you think these people were sitting on their couch and decided one day I think I'll try singing? The serious contenders have been singers for years and some have had professional lessons but they just never could get that big break. Adam was not a recording artist he was an understudy, he deserves this chance just like everyone else. He wasn't famous and wasn't recognized outside of his community, he should be commended for his tenacity not be accused of being a ringer.

Just re-watched last night's show - his singing is just noise. Awful.

Adam is a trained professional and doesn't belong in the competition.

American Idol and FOX are trying to make a name for themselves by "discovering" a "new talent."

Kris Allen singing Heartless was pretty sweet. I've liked him the whole time. If Gokey stays I'm done.

Danny is sooooooo boring, he has an adequate voice, buts sorry no charisma. Adam and Kris should be the final two but it will probably be Danny and someone else, not sure who. But Allison should have been there, her and Adam are the best and most unique period.

Even though I am from Milwaukee, I have been a Kris Allen fan since the beginning. He is an incredibly talented individual who made each song his own, unlike Danny. Danny has a nice voice, and could have a great "Michael Buble" like career, but Kris is an artist.
Adam is very good - but the screaming lately is not my cup of tea. GO KRIS!

Adam, although very talented, is W A Y over the top in his renditions lately. He completely and utterly robbed every bit of SOUL out of "One" last night and made it sound like something out of Rock Star Super Nova.
The Aerosmith song he did second was OUT OF TUNE at points, something the judges didn't even bring up because he is the obvious favorite and they can't bring up anything negative about him at this point.
All in all his vocal styling sounds like some hair band from the 80's. It sounds old when he hits those high notes. Nothing new there.
Mid.dle Ame.rica / b.ib.le be.lt MIGHT be his downfall.

Danny's 1st tune had a total of 4 notes in it. Usually the judges would bring this fact up as a criti.cism but not last night.
His second tune was very good but not a complete winner.

Chris's 1st tune was OK but not his fault as the two idi.ot judges picked it and then threw him under the bus. Simon was correct in his assessment of the two judges who didn't do their job and let him flop in the breeze.
His 2nd tune was the best of the evening and he was the true winner of the night.
Soul, talent and not over the top theatrics.

The rig is in and Adam/Danny will be the finalist.

Allison was ROB.BED.

The first song they gave Kris was horrendous, but he did the best he could. I agree Adam's version of Crying was not my favorite but he is my favorite still and Allison was robbed also but I think people feel sorry for Danny and will put him through because of that but he is very boring to me.

You may not like Adam's voice but he is never off pitch or flat as Danny has been a few times during the show and even last too. Kris just couldn't handle the song he was given although I really liked his version of the one he picked. It really doesn't matter about Adam because even if he's not the Idol winner, he has a very long and successful career in front of him.

...and behind him. What a ruse this year's "competition" is.
