Politico:

The expected announcement Tuesday by Florida Gov. Charlie Crist that he's running for the Senate would seem to be a rare bit of good news for beleaguered Republicans.

But while Crist is a brand-name recruit with sky-high approval ratings and bipartisan appeal, his path to keeping the seat of retiring Sen. Mel Martinez in GOP hands has at least one significant roadblock: Sunshine State conservatives.

Memo

To: Governor Charlie Crist
From: DeBartolo
Date: Today
Re: Conservatives

In the event you haven't bee told, the Conservative Christian Right OWN and CONTROL the Republican Party. Thats why we left after 58 years!

If your serious about a run for the Senate, you need to go to the local First Baptist Church, go down to the alter and get saved. Join the church, then call James Dobson, Pat Robinson, and Tim Laye for their blessing. Then go to daddy Rush for his final annointing.

Crist's job approval ratings in Florida are north of 70%.

Crist is in the same situation as Arlene Spector. He probably gets beat in the primary by someone who will lose big in the general.

He should follow Spector to the Democratic party. Then he can even come out of the closet if he wants, or stay in and no one will care.

Point well made. We left the GOP after 58 years. We are tired of the hate mongering fagainst everyone and everything that isn't baptist and Republican.

He is the only Republican down there who would have a chance in the general election.

Question. What do Republicans Abe Lincoln and Charlie Crist have in common? Answer. They both sport beards. Partial credit for "log cabin."

I wouldn't trust any Congressional Republican candidate no matter what he or she said. Their track record speaks for itself. Even Specter cannot be trusted.

Let's hope the lunatic fringe continues to 'purify' their party, until all that's left of the Republcans is a single concentrated drop of sour vinegar.

That would not be concentrated vinegar you would be smelling, although you could use vinegar to clean it up.

He stands for nothing because he is being sabotaged by his own party, and hasn't gotten a foot on the ground yet. He can't pass anything, because conservatives in FL want him out. That's probably the reason why he wants to leave FL. He is running for Bush-crony Mel Martinez' seat. Only glad Martinez is done. Christ is a fairly good and honest guy, he doesn't really fit in with the Republican crowd. I remember the last election, when fellow Republicans accused him of being gay. I feel sorry for Christ, but I will be watching with glee how ultra-conservatives and moderate forces will further trash the Republican party.

I live in Florida, unfortunately. Crist is the only light in this seemingly endless dark tunnel of good ol' boy, back slapping, confederate flag waving, back room deal makin' redn**ks. (Not sure, but I believe the state budgeting practice entails cigars, a back room, and a couple of occasional wh***s to keep the fellas happy.) Mark Rubio is an id*ot-- he was known for keeping signficant legislation off the floor, forestalling a vote, when it came to children, families, and those with disabilities. He squashed discussion on the Children's Healthcare Initiative and any legislation helping autistic children and families. These aren't nice guys, they don't play fair, and shouldn't be allowed to push their self serving agendas. I'm a registered Dem, but would vote for Crist in a heartbeat. He's proven himself to be far more moderate than our Dem Senator, Nelson.

Gotta love this. One of the few intelligent, moderate Republicans capable of drawing independents and conservative Dems getting crucified by his own party. Way to go GOP, the party of Genuinely Oblivious People.

Time for Crist to switch parties like Spector, especially since he's much more a moderate Dem than Spector is anyway.

Unfortunately, it isn't just a GOP obsession. Check out all the left wingnut comments below, rejecting a possible Crist move to the Dem's because , he would be a, gasp, blue dog Democrat as if any other kind of Democrat is electable in Florida.

All these conservatives are throwing their moderates under the bus, and IMO they will have trouble getting enough votes to win. It is the moderate, who can attrack Independants and Regan Democrats who have a chance. If the so called conservative far right voters want their party to die, just keep what your doing. I can't believe that there are people who actually think that many of the voters will embrace this crap.

With all the hub-da-doo coming at him from the GOP over his siding with President Obama on the stimulus .... he just might want to consider crossing the great divide.

---------- What a blow-back that would be. :)

The Peter Principle in action.

He can do more for his state as a Senator than as a governor? What kind of muddled thinking is that?

They're going to make mince meat out of him in the primaries. They're going to swiftboat him with the gay thing but it will not be directly linked to his opponent. The religious whackjobs and the Rushpublicans, there are plenty of them down here, will see to that. The same people who were behind Crist when he ran for governor have all switched sides and are backing Rubio now. Charlie Crist enjoys a lot of support in Florida but the democrats can't help him if he runs on their ticket. He's better off going independent.

Conservatives hate everything.

Like a flailing, hissing dying beast they gnash and snap at anything within striking distance.

At this point they're eating each other.

The GOP is the party of NO.
