Politico:

The expected announcement Tuesday by Florida Gov. Charlie Crist that he's running for the Senate would seem to be a rare bit of good news for beleaguered Republicans.

But while Crist is a brand-name recruit with sky-high approval ratings and bipartisan appeal, his path to keeping the seat of retiring Sen. Mel Martinez in GOP hands has at least one significant roadblock: Sunshine State conservatives.

This one is a done deal. Crist is unbeatable in Florida.

He is only unbeatable if he makes it through the republican primary! The crazy wacko repugs do not think he is conservative enough, so they will campaign hard against him! That is why Spector changed to the Dems! The repugs keep eating their own and then they have unelectable repucks running so the dems win again! Sounds like a win win for the dems!

Crist is unbeatable in Florida.

Primary or otherwise.

Former Brevard County GOP Chairwoman Cynthia Handley, a longtime GOP activist who chaired Jeb Bush’s campaigns in the county, said there’s no way she’s voting for Crist — in a primary or in a general election. And she said she encounters that sentiment regularly when she meets with other activists in her area.

“I’m not talking about radical right-wing Republicans. I’m talking about normal Republicans, normal conservatives,” said Handley. “They just think he’s more of a Democrat than he is a Republican.”

I wonder what she considers "normal conservatives."

Where o where are the normal Republicans? They left or retired. There are only bits and pieces of a totally broken party left and they keep at it, pulverizing what is left.

Honestly, why does it even matter if the base does not support him? They are becoming more irrelevant by each passing day. If all else fails he can always run as an Independent, I'm sure that with his years in office he has amassed some sort of fund raising system outside of the RNC.

The Colon Cleansing Kit™ is the thing being advertised just under Crist's photo.

Tell a conservative that Ronald Reagan raised taxes and signed an arms agreement with the Soviets and they start crying and yelling "STOP IT! YOU LIE! YOU LIE! WHY YOU LIE???? WAHHHHHHH!"

I so agree!

He is, anyway. He's a Colin Powell type.

Get honest.

His polls seem quite strong. He'll just have to win without that group.

What's the problem? If he wanted that base support, his politics would be different.

Who cares about his sexuality? Why do people keep mentioning that?

Because he is VERY likely a closeted gay man who married a woman to give the appearance that he is conservative and straight. He also helped pass anti-gay legislation in Florida, which makes him a self-loathing gay man. That the last thing this country needs in the senate.

how did crist come to conclude that this would be ok with his party leader, rush? pershaps, this is part of the gop grand plan to embrace diversity and the "new" gop will get behind crist to cut their ties to the shrinking past and begin to rebuild their party on the platform of tolerance.

Many Republicans have been mocking Gov. Crist's behind his back since he first started running for office. What really drives many of 'em wild is he is a very nice, honest guy and they're cynical and corrupt. I roared when he won the Governorship -- that musta put 'em over the edge!

I can't say whether he's gay or not. I do know from personal experience he is very polite to everyone -- Republican or Democrat -- and tries very hard to be reasonable, even if you don't agree with his political views -- and being a Democrat, I don't.

Nice and honest, yes. Policy? Very weak. True moderate in that he rarely takes a stand on anything

He is a modern-day republican, like Huntsman. Let's see how long before the conservatives polish him off in some nonsensical way. They should embrace him and refute Cheney's bashing of a fine man like Colin Powell.

republicans seem to actually be fine with gay pols in their party. they just have to stay in the place where one keeps coats and strongly dislike other gays. heck, georgy and richard had that happy guy practically living at 1600. no wonder the visitor logs came up lost. those boys had more important things than being "happy" , like war c.r.i.m. e.s. and tore ture.

Ourtage has already outed Crist and NPR is sort of in the middle of it. By claiming during the interview with the filmmaker that NPR doesn't endorse outing of public figures and would, therefore, not mention on air the names of two politicians who are outed in the film, they drove their listeners online to discover the ommitted names.

I hope so....it would be good for the country in general if there were more variety of people in the GOP besides drooling slopeheaded Jesus freaks and racists.
