Charlie Crist Senate Run May Face Conservative Revolt

The expected announcement Tuesday by Florida Gov. Charlie Crist that he's running for the Senate would seem to be a rare bit of good news for beleaguered Republicans.

But while Crist is a brand-name recruit with sky-high approval ratings and bipartisan appeal, his path to keeping the seat of retiring Sen. Mel Martinez in GOP hands has at least one significant roadblock: Sunshine State conservatives.

As a moderate Republican, I think Crist is exactly the type of candidate the GOP should embrace. I, and many Republicans I know, am tired of the far-right faction of the party hijacking the GOP for their own narrow ends. I work, pay taxes, and am a productive member of society on my own. I do not need far-right radicals in my own party telling me whats good or bad. The GOP should be moving toward less government intrusion into the lives of Americans. The far-right wishes to legislate every aspect of how Americans think, feel, and act.

He's popular in Florida. A moderate and supporter of Obama during the stimulus bill. He is a pragmatist and not what the "hard" right would like to see in the Senate for a the planned GOP resurrection. The party of Rush and Cheney is more likely to support Marco Rubio who will suck up to the party establishment in return for letting him cut his teeth on the national stage.
Boy wonder miscalculated this one. He should have run for Governor instead.

I am a democrat and will support Crist on this one.

There they go again with the big lie, the "conservative" Republican claiming to be for small government, ignoring the fact that since WW 2, Republican administrations have run up the deficit $2.84 for every dollar by a Democratic one. How long is their base going to swallow the corporatist line?

Crist seems to be a rational moderate but his hard core republican cohorts will eventually balk when it becomes common knowledge that he is believed to be gay. While this should not matter, his intolerant party will never get behind this.

As a gay man I can assure you that Frank is butch compared to Crist. And generally the older guy in the relationship (not always but usually) is the top. Barney is the older man. I would be willing to bet Crist is a nelly bottom.

Even as a Democrat, I'd support Crist or any other Republican with my votes or dollars if they would do just one thing: Announce openly and loudly that Rush Limbaugh is a complete fool who does not represent the future of the Republican party.

You say that, Charlie, and you got my money (I don't live in Florida). In fact, any Repubilican who says that BEFORE their primary elections (got to be at least 10 days) has my vote and/or dollars.

Mr Crist, it seems to me, is going to have a tough time snaring enough primary voters to get the nomination, although if he does, I think he'll give his opponent a run for the money. Crist, alas for the future GOP, comes with too many negatives for the fundamentalist bigots who control the current GOP.
