Personal autonomy and privacy is vanishing. We have big brother, local governments and the media of all forms, who on a daily basis are eroding, invading, and degrading our personal liberties, not to mention the human qualities of "human". We have few sanctities left. We now live a world filled with voyeurism in all forms. Humans are evolving or "devolving" into nothing more than a sick and dysfunctional species that feeds upon voyeurism of forms to feel normal and in control.

The "additional information" the Greeks want is in the form of Euros. Lots and lots of Euros. Enough to stuff in your trunk, so to speak.

"Street View has not been banned in Greece." That is directly from the article and is a quote from Google. "Google Street View Banned" That is a quote of the headline. How can I expect to get accurate information from Huffington Post when I find such a glaring inaccuracy? Perhaps I can depend on CNBC, or Fox or another media source?

As I said to the previous poster. . . that is the GOOGLE REP'S response. Technically, it is still banned for use in Greece as Greece has not ratified an agreement w/ Google. You cannot use this application for any Greek locale as the Greek government has prohibited the use of it on Greek soil so the term BAN is accurate.

Actually the goverment hasn't prohibited the use of G. Street View, it was put on hold by HDPA which is an independent authority.

"Street View has not been banned in Greece. We have received a request for further information and we are happy to continue discussing these issues with them. We will discuss with them whether it is appropriate for us to continue driving in the meantime."

There. Fix the title please.

No need. You need to learn to read. That was the Google rep's response. Technically, it is banned in Greece pending further information, just as the title claims.

Go Greeks!
I for one think Google street IS an invasion of privacy.
Yes, I know Gov has even better detail public spyware but no public access.

The Greeks are free to do what they want, but Google street view is NOT an invasion of privacy. You have NO privacy in public. If they want to blur images of faces and hide license plate numbers, fine, that's what they already do, but beyond that it's BS that people think the public space is "private." I'm glad the U.S. doesn't have such a silly interpretation of "privacy." If you want privacy--go inside your private house or apartment or a hotel room and pull the blinds. If someone wants to snap my house, which is on a public street (which last time I checked, everyone in my community pays taxes for and thus is not a "private" street), fine, they can snap me all they want because I never have ever expected to have "privacy" in public spaces.

Your point would be valid if street view wasn't 360 degrees and looked into people's private property and the windows of their homes.

I worked with satellite photos in the early 60's and they were far better than Google Earth. If it is out in the open, then it is in public view.

You got to be really dumb to think streetview is invading anyone's privacy. How exactly?

If you had a stalker, s/he could watch your house 24/7. Does that idea appeal to you?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:03 PM on 05/12/2009

You would have the dumbest stalker in the world staring at a stationary picture of your house.

You mean the stalker could watch a single photograph of your house taken several months prior, that never changes, 24/7.

If you have a stalker, they can already watch your house 24/7. Long before Google Earth, or even the Internet, stalkers would just camp out in front of people's homes. In fact, almost all still do, even though they have the Internet available. Stalking is about fear and intimidation and control, not about looking at distant images on a computer screen. Also, you don't understand how Street View works, it's NOT a live view. It's usually pictures taken months ago. Finally, if you have a stalker, then you should report it to the police, not try to get public access limited to create a false right to "privacy" in public spaces.

I can't wait till they get all the various closed circuit TV cameras in most downtown metro areas wired in, so police can "follow" a suspect on screen. Real 1984 stuff.

Acutally, you can. Since the picture doesn't give that level of detail--you just see blurred trees and grass--and it's not a live shot.

Yes, I was just having fun, but I can see my dwarf apple trees on the google. If I wanted to get paranoid, I could worry about the border patrol airplanes, as I live 10 miles from an active Canadian border crossing. I see them all the time and if they are lucky, they see me.

Jeez, the residents of Milton Keynes were upset? Haven't they noticed the ubiquitous police/security cameras extant across Britain?

Google Earth/Maps are a joy. I have been able to retrace much of my Italian vacation via this spectacular tool. Pictures of things we did not take for one reason or another can be re-visited. Future trips can be researched. Whose privacy is being breached anyway?

Too much paranoia lately.

Cheers,
Jack

perhaps the idea of them being on Google for decades while in their robe getting the paper does not appeal to everyone?

I wonder what goes on in the streets of Greece that they are so worried about others seeing.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:40 AM on 05/12/2009

I guess the fine folks of Greece just don't understand how amazingly useful streetview is. I can look up an address and gat not just a top-down map of streets, but also a 360 of surrounding buildings, landmarks, construction... so many things a simple map or even a sat map just don't give you.
