NEW YORK — You knew it was coming: Sarah Palin is ready to tell her side, agreeing to publish a memoir with HarperCollins. The book comes out in Spring 2010 _ the year she is up for re-election.

"There's been so much written about and spoken about in the mainstream media and in the anonymous blogosphere world, that this will be a wonderful, refreshing chance for me to get to tell my story, that a lot of people have asked about, unfiltered," the Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential candidate said during a brief telephone interview Tuesday with The Associated Press.

Palin's memoir, currently untitled, will cover her personal and political life, from her childhood in Alaska and last year's campaign to her political beliefs and her family life, including the pregnancy of her teenage daughter, Bristol Palin, who gave birth in December to a baby boy, Tripp. (She and the baby's father, Levi Johnston, have since ended their relationship.)

"In fairness to my family, this is going be a good opportunity for them, too, because there have been so many misperceptions out there about who we are and what we believe in, and I'm excited to get to put my journalism degree to work and tell my story as it relates to my family," said Palin, 45, who in 1987 graduated from the University of Idaho with a degree in journalism.

Palin declined to name any specific misunderstandings and avoided detailed comments about her family, her political aspirations or about the divide in the Republican Party between moderates and conservatives, a divide her vice presidential run helped widen.

A Palin book has been rumored virtually from the time the election ended. Although Republicans Sen. John McCain and Palin were easily beaten by Democrats Barack Obama and Joseph Biden, Palin emerged a favorite among conservatives, an object of tabloid gossip and _ as the only candidate in the race who had never written a memoir _ a natural for a publishing deal.

The book will be co-released by the HarperCollins imprint Harper and, for the Christian market, by the HarperCollins-owned Zondervan, which publishes "The Purpose Driven Life" author Rick Warren, among others.

A memoir (or two) have become a virtual requirement for White House seekers, especially after Obama's "The Audacity of Hope" and "Dreams From My Father" established him as a stylist and storyteller with a vast following.

Story continues below

Although Palin denied any presidential ambition during Tuesday's interview, she did pick the most presidential of literary representatives, Washington attorney Robert Barnett, to handle negotiations. Barnett's clients include Obama and former presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

As he did when arranging a publisher for memoirs by Bush and Clinton, Barnett did not solicit competing bids, but chose to negotiate only with one publisher, HarperCollins, which Barnett praised for being "first and fervent in pursuing this project." Financial terms were not disclosed, but Palin was widely expected to get a multimillion-dollar contract. Barnett and Harper publisher Jonathan Burnham both declined to offer details.

If terms of the book deal aren't leaked by next spring, at least some of the details will be revealed in Palin's next financial disclosure forms with the Alaska Public Offices Commission. Income next must be reported on March 15, 2010. However, if she isn't paid in full by Dec. 31, some income may fall over to the next year's report.

Palin's book will address, and complicate, the push-pull between home and public life. With the release date just one year away, the governor will have to work quickly. Barnett said that the governor has formed an outline in her mind, but has yet to start writing. Burnham said Palin did not submit any writing samples when she met with HarperCollins executives in Washington, earlier this year. She will work with a collaborator, to be determined.

"She's obviously going to be engaged in the whole process of the book," said Burnham, adding that the role of the collaborator would depend on who was chosen.

"Every word of the book will be her words," Barnett said.

Palin and Burnham said the memoir will emphasize Palin's Alaskan upbringing, and the governor will talk about her "unpretentious" lifestyle. Burnham described the book as the story of an Alaskan encountering a national audience, "the soccer mom and the political operative, and how one became the other."

Palin has never written a book and her critics, noting her disjointed CBS interviews with Katie Couric, have questioned whether she could. Two years ago, Palin told PBS' Charlie Rose that her favorite writers were C.S. Lewis ("very, very deep") and a Runner's World columnist, Dr. George Sheehan. Asked Tuesday about her reading, Palin mentioned that she "really enjoyed" Katharine Graham's Pulitzer Prize-winning "Personal History" and cited works by Obama, McCain and Bill Clinton, whose "My Life" she read "just recently."

"Being a voracious reader, I read a lot today and have read a lot growing up. And having that journalism degree, all of that, will be a great assistance for me in writing this book, talking about the challenges and the joys, balancing the work and parenting, and, in my case, work means running the state," Palin said.

Under the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act, the governor and any head of a state agency are prohibited from having outside employment. But the book deal would fall under another provision of the act outlining outside services for a financial benefit.

Judy Bockmon, an assistant attorney general, said it appears the book deal would be permissible under the act as long it is not incompatible with Palin's official responsibilities and she doesn't use state resources, like her staff or her office, for personal gain.

Its so interesting that when she had the opportunity to 'get her story out there' and instantly reach millions via the Sunday morning talk shows, she ran like the wind. Now she wants to attempt to spin what we already know to try to cast herself in a better light?? Oh, please. . .

Her story is simply this: You can be an astonishingly illiterate, inarticulate, vindictive, narrow-minded, b.ig0ted, secession-espousing, hypocritical h@te-m.onger and STILL get mighty close to reaching (one of) the highest office(s) in the land.

Palin never appeared on the Sunday morning talk shows because they don't provide the 'unfiltered' media she so needs to keep her tales alives. The talk shows have actual people who (theoretically) might ask questions and possibly even have a follow-up question or two.

On second thought, the Sunday shows don't do a very good job of debunking the spin.
If her book tour landed her on the Daily Show, Colbert Report or Bill Mauer show, that could be fun.

Who, besides the ideologues who comprise her fans, actually believes there's an untold story of who Palin is? It'll go on the bookshelf next to the Swift Boat Vets novella in the Fiction-Occult section.

And she was critical of Obama making money off of the sale of his book "The Audacity Of Hope"

What will her book be called, "Parenting Skills By America's Most Dysfunctional Family"?

One thing we know for sure. Her book will never measure up to "Dreams From My Father" by Barack Obama, which he wrote long before he decided to run for president -- long before his political career in fact -- and which would stand alone as an incredible read even if he were not president.

What is SO stunning is how utterly obsessed the libs are with Palin. I mean, when was the last time adherents of the winning party went on rabidly savaging the VICE-presidential candidate of the losing party from the last election, months and months later? Did you hear Republicans ranting about Shriver or Mondale or Ferraro or Bentsen or Edwards? Not in the least! They went on with the business of the day. This Dem-Lib obsession is a historical novelty. It says a lot about the gratuitousness and cheap, manipulative demagoguery of the new power-elite. They really, really NEED to try and make the public wallow in ridicule... rather than pay close attention to what they're doing. And they have the willing cooperation of the culture mavens who appeal to the lowest common denominator... like the gutless wonder Wanda.
That game will work for only so long.

When was the last time the losing VP candidate refused to go away and kept forcing themselves in the headlines would be a better question. Her PR people keep her in all the newspapers and websites so she will not be forgotten and some of us are bored with that and we let it be known.

Governors don't "go away". It's not exactly in the job description. Governor Palin shows up at a public event, and the Lib Lynch mob is there ready for her. Do you suggest the governor stop showing up in public? Oh, that's very bright.

I keep wondering when an actual former VP like Al Gore will go away. He's made $350 MILLION dollars on this "man-made global warming hoax" and stands to make even more millions as the Dems in Congress sign on to this bogus claim. That is quite outrageous. But like the Clintons...nearing a half BILLION in money since they left office...what can U say? Corruption reigns in the Democrat party.

I agree that it long overdue for Democrats to get over Bush, but Sarah Palin?

As far as getting over other vice-presidential candidates vs. Palin, well they have never been as over the top as Palin before. What's more Palin is intent on keeping her vacuous self at the forefront. She is the lowest common denomintor.

Oh, pleeeeeez. How lame. What a laugh. "Not interested", "wish she'd go away". What planet are you people living on? The liberal news outlets, the comedians, the slimy political hacks attacking Palin with phonied-up, baseless corruption charges (which, have you noticed, keep fizzling into thin air) - this is a Democrat/Lib vendetta. There's never been anything like it before. And I'm really puzzled as to why. I can only conclude it's paranoia. They're just so darned petrified their Messiah won't be Prez forever and ever and ever.
Nobody's forcing Ms. Huffington to keep "PALIN" at the top of her headlines all the time. But it's good business.
It's all about money, really.

What is equally 'stunning' to me is the rabid shield of protection the repubs are throwing over their chosen warrior of Rightness Palin when she has proven simply by opening her mouth her staggering lack of qualification for a national level position. The fact that she is being demolished in the press is due to her own follies. From her hate filled campaign rallies (who can forget the chants of "kill him!" from her adoring crowds) to her gibberish filled 'interviews' (where it appeared the only word she could repeat with clarity was 'maverick' ), to her ethics violations, bridge to nowhere, neglect of the state she was elected to govern, to promoting a war of words with her grandson's teenage father, she oozes trainwreck from every pore. She continually courts the press and has made no secret of her interest in running for President. (SarahPac ring any bells?) Don't blame us for slowing down and taking a look at the runaway train. She put herself on that track and she's doing more then ample a job of derailing her own improbable dream of getting elected to the White House.

Personally, I'm not all that interested in Palin as presidential material. But the left-wing obsession with her is far more interesting. And left-wing protestations of it not being about their own obsession, even as they glom on all the more, are just too lame. If you weren't obsessed, you all wouldn't keep... well, OBSESSING!!!
I've never seen such denial like this in my life. It's a riot.
You've got Obama in the White House. You're convinced Palin will never be president (probably right), so, really, what does it MATTER?
There's something IN the Dem-Libs that can't let it go. I haven't quite got it figured out yet, except that my instincts tell me it's something very sick. They NEED Sarah, ANY "Sarah" to be there. For some reason, Obama in the White House isn't qui-i-ite... enough.
Fascinating.

Just read a column by George McGovern in the WSJ. Been hearing a lot about John Edwards and his pecadillos lately. Geraldine Ferraro was all over the networks during the elections. And these people don't even hold public office! When-oh-WHEN will they just G-O A-W-A-Y??!!
Oh, yeah, and then there's Sarah Palin. She's what--- governor of America's largest state, right? I guess she's supposed to do stuff like, well, appear in public, answer questions, make policy statements, huh?
But the obsessed Left wants to treat her every move, her every SNEEZE, like it's an attack on their "Messiah". It's pathetic.
Get a life, Left. Or better yet, how about YOU "go away"???

When do the voting population of Alaska stand up and say, ENOUGH! I am beginning to question Alaska - do they really like the negative attention that their Gov is bringing their state?

Palin won't be writing this book - it will be written by a ghost writer. The woman would not be capable of putting together a sentence(s) that people in the lower 48 would understand - just like she couldn't answer questions during the campaign that the lower 48 didn't shake our heads in disbelief.

IF Palin were to put ink to paper, at this point it would appear, the ONLY ones that would understand her rhetoric would be Alaska and there's not enough living there to make the book hit the Top 500 list.

Palin said, in a speech, that she considered aborting her 13 week old fetus simply because it had a birth defect & she said she wasn't sure if she would be able to love it.

Meaning, Sarah Palin exercised HER legal right to "choice" - without the interference from government, without Todd's knowledge or interference, & without the interference of anti-choice lobbyists .... Will she LIE in her book about what she said in public?

Transcript:
Palin said,
"just for a fleeting moment I thought, No one knows me here; no one would ever know. My amniocentesis came back and then I understood why some people would think they could change their circumstances, just take care of it. Todd didn't even know so no one would know."

Palin continued:
"My moments of doubt was whether I could love the child enough. Believe it or not, I didn't even know what a baby with Down syndrome was going to look like or feel like. I found the subject of Down Syndrome hard to research."
--- end of transcript

There you have it in her own words ... No one would know, not even Todd - she didn't think she could love the child & the journalist major found Downs Syndrom HARD TO RESEARCH .... oooook.
