HAMILTON, Ohio — Former NBA player and University of Cincinnati star Corie Blount was sentenced to one year in prison on Wednesday in a plea arrangement resulting from drug charges.

Blount, 40, had pleaded guilty in Butler County Common Pleas Court last month to two felony counts of marijuana possession after prosecutors dropped two trafficking charges.

Blount was arrested Dec. 4 after sheriff's deputies intercepted 11 pounds of marijuana sent to him at a relative's house. Investigators said they found another 18 pounds in a subsequent search of his home.

Although Judge Craig Hedric did not sentence Blount to the maximum 10 years in prison, he rejected Blount's claim that the marijuana was intended for personal use and to share with friends.

"Cheech and Chong would have had a hard time smoking that much," Hedric told Blount.

Hedric fined Blount $10,000 and ordered him to surrender two vehicles and $34,000 in cash seized in the bust.

Blount was a first-round draft pick by the Chicago Bulls in 1993. In an 11-year NBA career, he also played for the Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Phoenix Suns, Philadelphia 76ers and Toronto Raptors.

29 pounds. Twenty-nine pounds. Wow. That's more than a lifetime supply.

Blunt... I mean "Blount" should have have thought of a better way to take possession of that weed than to have it shipped to a relative's house. I doubt the cops needed a pot-sniffing dog to detect that 11 pounds.

Eleven pounds... for "personal use".

OK.

Now that is punishment that fits the crime.

So, they just TOOK his cars?
Why?
Were they crucial for evidence?
How about the cash? What in the world would that prove?
That he had enough cash on hand to buy more?

I didn't know cops could just take stuff while they were arresting you and say they "seized it during a bust."

Doesn't seem legal.

This has been POLICY since RAYGUN!

ELIMINATE NIXON'S DEA, REPEAL PROHIBITION AND STOP THE WAR OF TERROR AGAINST THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!

Of course, where have you been? The "Drug War" had pretty much ended several of the protection rights that individuals used to have and accept as the American Way. This was way before the Patriot Act wiped out evem more.

I'd like to know about the accountability issue surrounding the issue of searches & seizures; do the DEA agents keep most of what they take? Share it with their friends? I doubt its all put into the national treasury where it might help the economy...

I don't smoke pot but I think it is high time (no pun intended) to legalize it. This could be a source of new tax revenue that people wouldn't mind paying. It's time has come.

A bull gets incarcerated for marijuana.
That's nothing.
There's this chicken in N.Y. that was busted for crystal meth.

Wait a second, why do they get to take his cars and his money? He was given a fine, and they just get to take money and vehicles? WTF? "You sure have a lot of pot here... so much that we need to take your cars."

Understand the difference between illegal and criminal.

Illegal means people like Eric Cantor and Chris Dodd and Steve King and Charlie Rangel wrote a law.

Criminal acts can be perfectly legal. Take what happened on Wall St. We are told little can be done because nothing they did was "illegal" even though we all know that what they did was criminal.

Murder is a criminal act and is wrong. If we never bothered to write a law against it, it would be legal. Would that make murder right or any less criminal?

15 years ago, it was "illegal" to receive local channels (NBC, CBS, etc) on a satellite mini-dish (with a few exemptions) because a law was written to protect the interests of the cable companies from the new found threat of DirecTV. Does that mean it was criminal to do it then? What about now when millions get NBC from a dish?

Smoking pot is illegal. It is not criminal.

Putting people in jail for doing it....is.

This is just semantics, "criminal v. illegal."

I agree that the semantic distinction that is being used doesn't really make sense, but I also agree with the intended point of the post. What he's saying (I think) amounts to:
1) The community agrees that codified law is to be an expression of communal morality
2) The community agrees that, morally speaking, government should not imprison people arbitrarily, but instead as a consequence of acting in a way the community agrees to be immoral.
3) It is not immoral to smoke pot.
4) The codified law puts people in jail for smoking pot.
5) Therefore, the codified law violates communal morality instead of enforcing it.

I think I explained in a reasonably clear detail the difference....

Semantics, when they translate into people's attitudes and actions, can be the difference between a civilized society and savage one.

Pot was made illegal because of the confluence of influences...

The timber and paper industry wanted to shut down the competition of hemp.
We wanted a convenient excuse to put black and brown people in jail.
Pot, being the drug of choice, for hippies and leftists later became the target of Nixon's War on Drugs.

That is why it's illegal....

Why is continues to remain illegal is because of misinformation, but also because of a very CAVALIER attitude towards allowing the govt. to put innocent people in jail...

but it's ok because they haven't come for you....yet.
