Electronic equipment, including cell phones, iPods, PCs, videogames, and plasma TVs have increased demand for residential energy use annually by 3.4 percent since 1990, according to the International Energy Agency. This trend leads the IEA to estimate that personal electrical energy usage in homes should triple by 2030 worldwide.

Two thoughts on why Energy use has increase that need more attention in this report:

The first is the industrialization of developing nations. Industrialization takes electricity and how fast is China building power plants? This article appears to refer to international energy usage, and developing nations like China and India are rapidly expanding their energy consumption...

The second reason energy usage might be increasing here in the US is that the average new home size has been rapidly increasing due to the "McMansion" fad. Be as energy conservative as you'd like, but large homes use more energy. Period. Just ask Al Gore...

Is anyone taking in to account the electricity use from marijuana grow rooms in CA? That can cost upwards of $1,000. or usually more a month. So I hate to break it to ya, but if you're smokin indoor pot, you can't call yourself an environmentalist.....Just thought I'd mention it....

World energy demand today is about 6TW. There is consensus that by end of the century energy consumption will be around 20TW as more and more developing countries industrialize. And that's fine as long as most of that comes from renewable sources. 20TW can be generated with far less than 1 million square kilometers of solar... that's 0.2% of the planet's surface area.

Is there an NRA for electronics users?
As in "you'll have to pry my Blackberry from my cold, dead fingers."

It's not Blackberries but big screen tvs that cause the problem.

Toys, KTM, it's the all the toys plugged in all the time. Energy consumption is the true sacrament.

Why do you think the development of the renewable energy industry is so important? Fossil fuels are not going away ( not at least till they actually go away) so the development of renewable energy is more about servicing the increased demands of our energy hungry nation, not the replacement of oil and coal.

If you want to cut your electric bill plug all those wall-worts (plug-in transformers for your cell phones, PDAs, electric shavers, etc., into a multi-outlet power box that can be switched off and turn the switch off when your not really charging something. (And, charge them all at the same time.) Those wall-worts draw current even when they are not charging anything.

The biggest difference you can hope to make is to buy a 42" instead of a 50" tv. Or how about a 32" model? Way, better, still.

That's because your tv produces so much heat.

And maybe also because population keeps growing which wipes out any gains in efficiency? In this country, our population increase is mainly due to the direct and indirect effects of immigration. Not that anyone can say so without a lot of people pitching a fit about racism.

It's not population but the fact that more people have a higher standard of living. If the same people who come to this country would continue to live in Mexico and China, they would use less energy.

And the more people there are that do have that higher standard of living, the more energy usage will increase, in spite of the effeciency standards. If the population of a country keeps growing, then it's inevitable that will offset against the gains in effeciency. It's called math. One and one still equals two.

Do you really want to do the math? Data centers are some of the worst offenders out there. I would estimate the HP web server presence consists of
~10 web servers
~2 data base servers
~5 multi purpose servers (DNS, Mail, Load Balancing, administrative, replication)
~1 Storage Array
~ 2 switches

Then there is the back up site with about 60% of the servers of the production site. Lets say 30 servers for a round number. Server power is anywhere from 200w to 500w. Lets use Dell Power edge 1950III energy smart at 313w. This is 9.3kw IT Load. Then we need to add the overhead for UPS and PDU losses, that is easily 15%, now were at 10.8kW. Now lets add in the cooling required. Recent EPA report shows that on average cooling power = it power. So let's double our power, call it 20kW.

So 20kW is a rough estimate for this site. A lot of estimations, but they are reasonable.

That is 175,200 kWh annually or 185,537 lbs of CO2
@ $0.10/kWh = $1460/mo electric bill, 3-5 homes worth, so we can chat...

I am a greeny, and I fight this battle every day, but data centers are not going away, but they can be made to run 50% more efficiently, today.
