Kate Gosselin: Being In Spotlight Is Tough

MUSKEGON, Mich. — Kate Gosselin, co-star of TLC's "Jon & Kate Plus 8," says it's difficult reading stories about herself.

Recent media reports have focused a harsh spotlight on Kate and her husband, Jon, who star with their eight children on the popular reality show. In recent days, the Gosselins' wholesome on-screen home life has been called into question by reports of extramarital affairs. Both Jon and Kate have denied those accusations.

"This is certainly not what I envisioned I was signing up for," Kate Gosselin said Wednesday during an appearance at the Frauenthal Center, The Muskegon Chronicle reported.

"When I see magazines in stores it's really difficult. It amazes me there is an industry that follows you around and writes stories about you.

"It destroys peoples' lives. I need you to know, don't believe what you read unless you hear it from that person."

On its Web site, Us Weekly recently described an over-friendly relationship between Gosselin and her married bodyguard, Steve Neild, that "caught the attention of her husband _ and has become the talk of many locals" in their Pennsylvania community.

People magazine's Web site quoted Gosselin as saying the couple have been struggling for months.

"This week I'm on the cover of four magazines. One is true, three are not," Kate told her audience.

The Gosselins are on the cover of People, Us Weekly, Star and National Enquirer. She described People's reporting as the most accurate.

She has previously denied having an affair with Neild. Jon Gosselin has denied cheating with a 23-year-old schoolteacher, and he has apologized for putting his family in an "awkward situation."

Kate Gosselin said the stop in Muskegon, located about 35 miles northwest of Grand Rapids, was the last on her travel schedule for a while. She said she plans to spend more time at home.

"The last couple weeks have been interesting," she said. "I had to address that."

TLC's most popular series, which has been on the air for four seasons, attracts an average audience of more than 2.8 million viewers.

The new, 40-week season premieres May 25 with an hourlong edition.

First and foremost - let's lay out the truth on the line:
1) Who is with the kids most of the time since Mom is gallivanting around with a $14 picture book of her kids to sell and herself (new deal with WalMart/HealthTex clothes)
2) Neither parent worked once the show started - the kids have been their gravy train.
3) What they have done (both parents) is EXPLOIT their children - they haved NO RIGHTS - in fact, California's Child Labor Laws NOT so strict to protect kids in show business, they might have moved there.
4) Pennsylvania and other states do not have Child Labor Laws to protect kids who are in show business - scripted or unscripted - show is being made/televised for entertainment - all children deserve the same rights as the children in California
5) These poor kids are nothing more than the modern day Dionne quintuplets - look up what was done to them, the main difference is: the exploitation is televised/internet 24/7 - plus will the kids ever even see a PENNY of the money their childhoods bought?
The show needs to stop. The family needs counseling. Whether the two birth parents are able to resolve their issues... the children SHOULD HAVE been put first!
They didn't NEED a 1.2 million home. Once the gravy train stops - these two people have no visible means in place to provide for their family. Upkeep alone is probably $3000/month - not counting mortgage and insurance.

Well said. As I wrote earlier, I do hope out of all of this mess, good can come of it. There needs to be laws in place to protect children across the country from parents and corporations willing to exploit their children and violate their right to privacy. Supernanny, Dr. Phil, Jon and Kate, the list goes on..all broadcast video of children at their most vulnerable in their homes for ratings, for profit. Protection from privacy violations as well as labor laws need to be put in place nationwide.

Absolutely!! I hadn't even gotten close to what I consider a set of demands that should be enacted nation-wide, again, based on California's system.

To ensure, financial protection, privacy, counseling, strict time limits on filming, etc. All children on all show must be protected from exploitation and such.

Some of the J&K shows even have had them semi-nude, a pedophile's dream...ki­ds in showers and on potties...­.so all sorts of limits do need to be in place.

I used to enjoy the show. I must say that I was always amazed at the way she emasculated Jon. She treated that man like he was a child.

There was one episode that I watched that I decided I had had enough of Kate. The guy from PBS who does carpentry stuff went to their new house and he was installing solar panels on their roof. She was so rude to him and had quite the diva attitude. I could not believe how she treated this man. I understand people have bad days but this was diva behavior, like 'why do i have to talk to him, i know what solar panels look like' and huffing and making faces like "why do i have to deal with him".

There was also an episode which I believe was the last episode of last season where they are talking at the end and Jon says he doesn't like having the cameras around all the time and Kate talks about how much she loves it..the travel, the book, etc. When they sign off for the season, Kate says something like "see you next year" and Jon says "we'll see".

Kate likes her life in the spotlight while it appears clear Jon does not. The fact the new season is about to premiere demonstrates to me that Kate still treats Jon like a child and does not value his input.

I won't watch this show anymore either.

I read somewhere that Kate is soooo greedy she won't even allow Jon access to their fortune. He's had to empty out his 401K just to survive these past few months since they've been newly separated.

If that is a fact and true then she is textbook abusive spouse - verbal abuse, belittling behavior, alienating Jon from friends, family, isolating him, keeping him broke and probably asking her for any cent that he wants to spend.

He needs to grow a set of cojones and get himself the best divorce lawyer around, someone who specializes in representing abused spouses, and get full custody of the children, plus the mansion, plus child support and alimony and take that woman to the cleaners.

Kate Gosselin's behavior is no different than a husband who is domineering, controlling and abusive to his wife and children and rules their lives with fear and an iron fist. Abusive people don't care about anyone other than themselves, and having absolute control over everyone in their domain.

I sure hope Jon wises up real quickly and gets the best lawyer their money can buy. Oh and sue her for the cost of his lawyer's fees too. He is entitled to receive half of the money they made as a couple during their entire marriage up until the day the divorce papers are filed.

The only way to get her attention is to take away her power and in the process, hit her where it hurts.

Well, I just read the article in People Magazine this week. Some people have told her to quit the show and save her marriage..­..she says she can't because she's doing all of his 'for her kids'. Give me a break. Those kids don't need a 1.2 million dollar house. They'd rather have their mother at home. Even if she's as hateful as she is.

Who does all that laundry, cooks those organic meals, cleans that big house, and most importantly raises the eight kids while the parents are away? It seem right now K is on a damage control media blitz, but even before the alleged affair became news, she was gone A LOT at book signings and speaking engagements, and J was often doing the same, or snowboardi­ng/golfing­.

They built their brand and advertise themselves as if they are just regular parents doing all the things it takes to run a household and raise such a large family, but the reality is they have not been doing these things for a long time. They have other people doing that laundry, cooking those meals, cleaning that house, and sadly, raising those kids. TLC needs to pull the plug on this farce now. I don't wish any ill will toward the kids, or even J & K, but I do hope that they put an end to the insanity of living such an inauthentic life, and allow their kids to grow up off camera for a while now. To do otherwise, in my opinion, is purely selfish on the part of these parents.

Kate - shut your self-absorbed, narcisstic yap for once! I think all the tanning booth rays have gone and destroyed what little brain cells this woman may have once had. If she ever once loved her kids, she doesn't now. If she really cared about her children and her marriage, she wouldn't still be on the talk show rounds, or doing book signings. She'd be home tending to her family's needs.

This woman is one of the biggest phony's I've ever seen. I stopped watching TLC completely and won't return to that network unless and until they cancel this show and yank the reruns. Sure, I miss Stacy and Clinton a little, but all in all, I don't miss TLC very much. For the love of all that is good in this world, would someone please take screechy harridan off our airwaves. Wow, that's harsh. SUre she's being selfish right now and wallowing in attention, but she did give birth to them and love just comes with that. Newsflash: You can be a bad mom and still love your kids. And just because they're on TV, doesn't mean she's a bad mom, just that she's not doing what most people would do. And btw, most people who wouldn't put their kids on TV would make that choice based on the experiences of people like Jon and Kate, but who did they have to hold up as examples of what not to do? We can learn from their mistakes, but they didn't have that luxury. They were naive and got sucked in by promises of money and the ability to send 8 kids to college. Yeah, wanting a house big enough for your family and a college education for your kids is a sure sign on a mom who doesn't care about her kids.
