RNC Chairman Michael Steele is teaming up with Rep. Michele Bachmann, asking Republicans for their help blocking public funding for ACORN, the progressive community organizing group.

Bachmann is sponsoring an amendment that would block some $8.5 billion from being made available to the organization, according to a fundraising email from Steele. The group was a frequent target of Republicans during the 2008 election for its voter registration efforts.

"Over $50 million in federal funding money has found its way into the hands of ACORN's leftist activists over the last several years, but now the Democrats are about to make $8.5 billion more in tax-payer funds available to this radical group," Steele wrote to supporters.

The House blocked a similar amendment of Bachmann's just last week, which would have barred groups facing indictment from receiving public funds.

Bachmann spoke out against funding ACORN in a Thursday morning press conference.

"This is about how Congress spends the people's money in our country and its about the bar that Congress sets for accessing federal funding. The question before us is, it a right that anyone is entitled to or is it a privilege that must be earned?"

Steele urged Republicans to talk to their legislators.

"It's time we told Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi, and Barack Obama that we won't tolerate using our tax dollars to pay off their electoral support machine. That's why I hope you'll take this opportunity to send Barney and Nancy an eCard to let them know that the Democrats' assault against our free election right to "One Person, One Vote" and the Rule of Law will not be tolerated."

That they don't even know to leave well enough alone, to let sleeping dogs lie - that is the amusement. Our history is a history of misrepresentation. This country has been "left" for decades, but the sum total at the ballot-box thanx to voter fraud, voter caging and voter suppression has given false life-support to some very bad ideas. It's given misplaced entitlement to implausible ideologies. It's given hubris to absurd policy. Honesty eked out a victory in '08, but we've got thousands of voting districts with bad intimidation habits that still have to be addressed. Kudos to these clowns for keeping the issue alive in an off year.

These two nuts, Steele and Bachman, are so, so entertaining. How in the world did these trwo get elected to anything? Their Vaudeville Act is the most hilarious soap opera ever. I think they are secret Democrats. Gotta be, because they are giving the electorate many reasons to see the GOP as a laughingstock. Bachman is crazy as a loon and Steele is a buffoon who thinks he is relevant. What a pair. Lol.

Further evidence that the gop don't stand for democracy one little bit.

This is simple - minorities by far are the least enrolled for elections, and Acorn is trying to remedy this. Every citizen has right to be enrolled to vote. Period. The gop do not have the right to block the legitimate enrollment of the citizenry.

Just because of the likelihood that minorities, like every other voter, will vote for the party and person who they believe will further their interests, does not mean that they don't have right to vote.

Aren't the tea parties about taxation and REPRESENTATION?
Why the hell are they trying to interfere with encouraging more representation by getting more Americans involved?

Their complaints are simply lies, which the American people saw right through.

Seriously. Openly blocking the legitimate enrollment to vote of American citizens is a priority for the gop now?

Pathetic.

If they really wish to look more petty, and less American than they do already, then they may as well continue down the ever steepening road of childish tantrums and dishonest, see through propaganda to oblivion.
A shame for those who need mature, intelligent representation on the right - apparently that, too, is going to have to mostly come from within the Democratic party.

The sooner a new party is formed to offer real opposition to my political party, the better for all of us.

Absolutely disgusting, anti-American politicking at it's worst.

Listen to the hate here. Wow. I, for one, welcome republicans like these with open arms. These are the type of people who never have policy issues they can talk about. All they are left with is fear and revenge. Still mad at Acorn because they help register millions of voters and got Obama elected. Trying to target effective groups like this before the next elections. Obama and the could enact "Martial Law Just Cause I Feel Like It" and a new "Free Abortions for Everybody Law" and STILL beat these people in the next election. No, I LIKE these Republicans. These people are the nail-in-the-coffin of the Republican party. Keep it up Steele and Bachmann. I gots nothing but love for you.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not believe there has been a single reported incidence of any votes being cast by the Superman's or Wonder Woman's that were registered in the ACORN fraud.

It's hysterical that after two stolen elections the Republicans all of the sudden care about voter integrity.

Not to mention that fact that Acorn themselves reported the issues, leading to the charging of those employees.

Why such a loosing strategy during the election would become a recycled priority is beyond me!

Maybe their polling data is coming from the 13th dimension, and their paperwork got mixed up.

If they REALLY wanted to team up against a group causing trouble in this country, they'd aggressively go after the GOP.

those GOP guys have committed and been caught, and been prosecuted for 10x more voter suppression, voter registration, voter fraud cases than Acorn has ever even been accused of by anyone with the law.
Then of course all the other crimes they commit daily.

They were attacking Acorn before the election because they knew Acorn would hurt them by getting more registered voters. Republicans don't want more voters. They forgot that the election is over I guess.

Hmm... 'Acorn has gotten about $50 million in funding over the last several years but now Democrats are about to give them $8.5 BILLION'....

Call me 'craz'y' but I'm a little skeptical that a group receiving maybe $5-8m a year previously are now going to be given $8.5 BILLION...

Exactly right. This is a repeated ploy by the Republicans. Remember, the first big push that the Repubs made against ACORN was to claim that over $100 Billion of the TARP money was going to ACORN (which was beyond absurd). ACORN wouldn't know what to do with $1Billion, much less $8 Billion. They just aren't set up as that kind of organization.

It is more likely that up to $8 Billion is set aside for some general use, and some Republican strategist theorized that ACORN could conceivable apply for part of it. The claim is then made that ACORN is getting $8.5 Billion.

ACORN would be eligible for the money because it was set aside for urban development and neighborhood stabilization activities.

Here's a list of all the community work ACORN does - http://www.acorn.org/index.php?id=12341&L=0%2Findex.php%253

Republican's claim that it is a radical arm of the Democratic party because they go into poor, mostly minority neighborhoods and help the people. While the GOP's goal is to keep those people poor, stupid and oppressed.

And I'm not even going to go into the fake claims of voter fraud, when really the only organization that was being defrauded was ACORN, not the election. ACORN's goal was to register real voters and they paid people to do that work, but several people filled out false forms and basically stole money from ACORN. The GOP is a bunch of deceiving shysters who think most Americans are stupid. Hence the low level of intelligence in the lower income levels of their party.

Bachmann ALWAYS exaggerates numbers. Now she's got another inept character to join in her fictious lies. I don't know why Minnesota keeps this person in office.

I just want to know why the sham "election" of 2000,which involved widespread voter fraud,in Florida, at least wasn't investigated.
I guess 9/11 blocked the investigation that was going to be done according to most of the major newspapers.
And look what we got!

Acorn was a smoke and mirrors deal for the Republicans.
It certainly takes the heat out of the Minnesota Stall by the GOP.
It takes the spotlight from torture, health care, the Republican economic downfall, etc.
If real election reform is practiced, Republican Governors won't be able to have people who are valid voters erased from the registered voter lists.
