Brooke Shields's mother, who suffers from dementia, was checked out of a New Jersey nursing home Thursday by a journalist seeking a "tabloid story," the outraged actress tells PEOPLE.

Teri Shields, 75, was later found unharmed at a restaurant next door to an assisted living center in Old Tappan, N.J., talking to a freelance reporter, according to police, who say no arrests have been made but the case remains under investigation.

The fact that 'just anyone' could check a patient out of a facility without the permission is scary.
Think about it, some wingnut psyco could just walk up to any nursing facility and walk out with someone and then they could be found died.............
Think about this people, this is NOT a good situation and I hope Brooke's star power and this incident will change the rules.

Some things should sacred. An ill Mother suffering from dementia is one of them. My mother passed away not long after dementia. I consider that a blessing. Any one who would take advantage of a person such as this person did should be sued every which way he can. Money isn't the purpose, but to make sure this doesn't happen again and to make his life a living hell until hell freezes over!

Guess covering legitimate news stories are out of the question, instead these slime are looking to invent tabloid news to make a buck. They're out of their minds.

That is horrible, to take a woman suffering from dementia from the safety of her home to get a story? Shame on them....Brooke should make sure that dosen't happen again by making sure who has the right to take her out.....

Um, it looks like this wasn't the National Enquirer or its staff but a freelance writer who has known Mrs. Shields for more than a decade. I dunno. Not defending the tabloid but not buying such a swift scapegoating by Brooke either.

If this person indeed knew Teri Shields, he/she also knew about the dementia. No excuse. Trying to pull something out of someone who doesn't know anymore what is what. Sad.

Enquirer reporters ought to know better. Some family friend. Enquiring minds is an oxymoron.

Article states....the reporter was a friend of the mother for 10 years, had visited her before, was given permission by the family (written or verbal) to visit and check her out. Nursing home was following procedure, like a school does, as to who can leave with a person. This all implies Ms. Shields may have personal issues with this paper or reporter, until further info comes out.

Yeah, a reporter showed up with a photographer just cause they wanted to visit. I'm not buying that.

I used to be a weekly newspaper reporter many "aeons" ago and was proud to have been called a journalist. I was proud of the profession and its role in the society.

No longer.

this is so beyond the despicable, so beyond the pale. Tabloid "journalists" are the lowest form of humanity and we as citizens are at fault for this kind of reprehensible behavior. If we don't stop reading Enquirer, People, etc., AND watching the trash on TMZ, E!, Entertainment Tonight and all the other so called entertainment news providers, more of these kinds of exploitation will continue. Time an time again we read about these invasion of "public figures" privacy; last night I watched Farrah's Story and there the National Enquirer was accussed and found guilty of exploiting her illness. Terri Shields is not a so-called public figure. Yet here these sha ites have removed her from the home for no other reason than to exploit her and embarrass Brooke Shields.

I'm trying to understand when did entertainers become public figures and when did their private lives become public information? If entertainers were to stop going out in public, when not on stage or screen these nasty invaders would still rifle through the entertainers lives somehow.

It's time the Enquirer be put to out of business and I hope the Shields family is able to do so. Whomever looses their jobs over this has only themselves to blame but I know they won't because they have no conscience, no morals, no ethics.

You seem to know all the sleeze. I've never bought an Enquierer. Nor do I want to. But obviously this kind of journalism does appeal to a quite stupid part of the public. It's like paid programming late at night, somebody has to be foolish enought to buy into it or it wouldn't exist.

Let's be specific. We know this is just the type of sleeze that the Right wingers would be into. They're all about getting interference out of private lives, but they'd certainly by this tabloid to read this junk. Left to me, if I were her, I'd sue for controlling interest in the paper. Suing for money is pointless because they usually have deep pockets and a fund set up to be able to handle this. If you get controlling interest in the paper, you can run it into the ground and it didn't cost you a nickel to do so. That would be the ultimate revenge for a celebrity.

I would be more interested in hearing what story these moronic 'journalists' would make of an elder dementia patient. Can the Enquirer flip the script and put these jerks and/or their family on the front page? See how they like life in the public eye. Additionally, it may put some other 'journalists' on notice that they indeed have something to lose...privacy.

The Inquirer has set a new level on how LOW some one will go for a story. The Inquirer is so LOW there's nothing anyone can say or do to make their point, because The Inquirer has NO moral compass.
