US First Lady Michelle Obama is not a "great beauty," but will "just get better with age," Iman, one of the first black supermodels, says in a magazine interview.
"Mrs Obama is not a great beauty," the Somali-born model and wife of rocker David Bowie tells Parade magazine's Sunday issue, reflecting on the first black US first lady, who is a lawyer by training and a former executive.

Why give a voice to what some super model says about our awesome first lady. Who really cares! She is wonderful because of who she is not what she looks like. Her great beauty comes from the inside which is the only kind that maters anyway!
That was a very backhanded compliment. You know that nothing is taken away from you if you acknowledge that the first lady is beautiful. Sometimes it's ok to be honest w/ yourself.
Let's just put aside the sheer stupidity of this public remark by a very insecure woman. She still believes black woman are considered "beautiful" if their features mirror those of white standards
of beauty. That was certainly the case for a time in the US modeling industry (not so much in Europe). Iman is also caught in a past that elevated that kind of look to the front of the class. That is a world she is comfortable in but no longer exists. If you've ever seen Iman's daughter from her first marriage (to a very black man) you might understand why she was estranged from her mother for a time. I have a feeling her current "white" husband, David Bowey, finds Mrs. Obama extremly attractive, but then he's clearly much more evolved than his superficial wife. He must be mortified.
Iman used to brag about how David won her heart by surprising her with a Hermes bag very early in their relationship--this is what won her heart. Good to see she's still as shallow as ever.
Seems to me that the article is all about advancing Iman's own agenda, which is, (now that she is well past her glory days) , how she was discriminated against during those glory days. Baloney!
I find that most supermodels are very interesting to look at, but fail to qualify for the beauty category. I think that this was a cheap shot orchestarted by a washed up aging supermodel.

Of course, Michelle is not a supermodel. But she is very attractive, has a sense of confident style, and she has grace. She also has precious inner qualities of intelligence, competence, drive, discipline, accomplishment, compassion and spiritual commitment. To me, these latter qualities are far more beautiful than a perfect bite, or an aquiline nose. They will last forever, and are the product of hard work and right mindedness. To most people, Michelle is a great beauty for reasons deeper than face value, even if she does not aspire to be a supermodel.
How is no defines beauty is the question at hand. I personally do not find Imani beautiful, or most of the Super Models out there.

This headline is completely misleading and wrong but what else would you expect from Yahoo news.

And apparently Iman is no great intellect - something that is unlikely to improve with age.

Why she felt it so necessary for her to make this comment is perhaps part of her responsibility of being married to a slave owners grandson! Maybe she is ticked because her husband seems less powerful since Michelle Obama's is POTUS. Did she lose bragging rights?

I read the article! She first insulted the First Lady, then she attempted to cover it up by making the balance of her useless statement about herself. I stand by my opinion of what she said and her intent!

Even if she was trying to complimenting Michelle, that was the wrong thing to say, honestly Iman was a supermodel and all, but she is no great beauty.

The basic gist was: People who are deemed "great beauties" can only go downhill, whereas Michelle, who is interesting and bright, will only get better and better with age.

Compare THAT to someone like Katharine Hepburn, who was undeniably not a "great beauty" in the classic sense, but was "interesting" and most definitely "bright"; she retained something undefinable well into her 80s that was beyond "beauty". She had class, she had vigor, she took care of her body, and benefited from it. I think Michelle will take the Katharine route vs. the Elizabeth Taylor route.
