Recession Hitting Middle-Aged The Hardest
New York Times:
IN this recession, it is better to be old. Being young has some advantages, too.
But being in the middle of the spectrum -- in your 30s or 40s -- seems to be the worst place to be.

The SURPLUS that was left to the cheney/bush admin was for social security & medicare, BUT BUSH gave it away to those who propped him up and put them in office. 9=11, invading a country for revenge & war profiteering, spending 10 billion a month on a war of choice.
WE are in this MESS because of REpublican GREED and dishonesty.
Prosecute for war crimes the whole lot of them.ASAP
Those are middle aged people in that photo, all right, probably 50s and 60s. Those body types are very indicative of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes due to faulty diets and processed food that has been pushed on the American people (who were more than willing to let someone else make those decisions for them). These are the people who will be on Medicare soon if they're not already.
Wake up, people. Take care of yourself because no one else is going to.
Well if you not old or young, it seems you're up the creek without a paddle. I hope you guys make it threw without being too mistreated by this recession and I'll say a prayer for all of you to be safe.
I would love to have universal heath care !!
my grand son recently got very ill his life threatened by this illness
I remember my son in law saying to the doctor is this about money the doctor said yes my son in law almost lost it and said please don,t say this is about money this is my son,s life were talking about
I must admit some thing broke in me that day !
I cried for two days why? because it seemed money was more important then a six year old little boy who was in so much pain getting the care he needed to get well
I will never be the same for we now worshiped more then life
I never want a parent to ever go though this ever it is criminal I tell you !!!!!! to do this to families
Unfortunately, our health care system is all about the money and not those suffering. We need universal health care, but our leaders and the insurance industry will never let it happen.
Well it is part of the culture we live in and some people have a direct experience with the callousness of American values and society when they face a health crisis.THi is where it gets played out in a way that hurts since it is about life and death.
We are close to having a similar system to South Africa's where people die because they are not treated by hospital unless paid for in advance- could be anything any emergency and people have been turned away from the better hospitals or left to bleed to death for not coming up with the money.
We're in a depression, not a "recession
Too bad about the cbo's concern over that pesky 1 trillion plus start up cost. Funny how liberals whine about the cost of health care, but gloss over that little nugget.
When it happens to you, it's righteous indignation. When it happens to anyone else, it's whining.
Looking at Americans from Wall Street’s Point of View:
1. Americans Cost TOO Much compared to Chinese, Asians, and Africans
2. Americans Consumers are 65% of our Economy, but we can make consumers out of the rest of the world with some marketing and time.
3. “Main Street America is no longer relevant or worth saving!”
4. “Look what we have done to small towns throughout middle America - many near Ghost towns!”
5. “Main Street Americans don’t Produce Like we do on Wall Street!” SanSilly quote!
6. “If you can make it big on Wall Street you can make it anywhere!”
7. “The only things that matter are Wall Street and our Position in our Elite Society!”
8. “America owes us for making this Economic Success!”
9. "We don’t need a healthy Main Street!”
10. “Ignore Main Street Americans they don’t even know what is going on!”
11. “There is a sucker born every minute America lets find a WAY to take him/her!”
12. "Build other countries' economies and consumers!"
13. "If they were dumb enough to sigh that "TRICK&TRAP" contract they had better pay!"
Why the picture of a bunch of Big B_utts doing Nothing when referring to the Middle-Class?
The Middle-Class does not look that different from Wall Street? I have seen plenty of tubbies on Wall Street!
Stop the stereotyping!
If those hunched over gray-hairs in the photo are in their 30's and 40's, they must have had hard lives. I'm 45 with a terminal blood disorder, well past my projected expiration date and I look like a spring chicken compared to them.
There's something strange here--the liberal template is usually "World ends, minorities and children hit hardest!" This is really bizarre...
I beg to differ, being old you do not have the time to recover what was lost in 2000 meltdown, and now the 2008 meltdown. Too old to work, and to old to wait it out, just screwed.
Laid-off boomers will never work again without single-payer health care which is removed completely from jobs.
Hello? Older workers were laid off first because their health-care premiums were many times higher than their younger co-workers. As soon as the economy began to tank, business laid them off.
Or...? There's always solent green. Or what was the suicide drug in Children of Men? Oh yeah, "Quietus".
It is not a recession or a depression. It is something a lot bigger than that. It is a fundamental shift in spending habits. The government is doing all the wrong things which will make things a lot worse. Save your money, folks. Stop spending, you are going to need every penny to survive what is coming.
Sweetie, you have just summed up tea bag economics. Save it for what? There will be nothing to buy. The people who will survive this are the people who can network and make community.
My friends in their late fifties and sixties haven't been spending. Their retirements are gone now because of the market. Save what money? They've been saving their entire lives and it's gone.
When we get to the point of people not being able to put food on the table anymore, remember who got us into this fix, remember which houses had the bush / cheney signs out front in 00+04 and.....
Not mine...In fact, I spray painted on my new $1200 garage door "Kriminals voted for Bush" with florescent paint. Yes, I used a 'K' instead of a 'C.'
Folks, can we proceed to calling this a Depression now? The word, recession, is such a joke in describing how teeteringly bad off we really are.
How about. "The first and last, worldwide, capitalist face-plant". So much for letting pirates rule.
I just wish we all could be successful. It’s so hard to see people struggling even those who cause this mess. America, we need to become innovators again.
People in my age group, 40-49, are in for a rough ride. Most of my friends have seen their 401K's reduced to ashes. Those with pension plans fear the long term stability of those plans. And those who have lost jobs are scrambling to find work in an ever-shrinking market with ever-shrinking pay and benefits. This is a good time to self-employ, hustle, market your labors independently. Office work is a dead end. Has been for decades.

Can't say I recall any "good times" per se. We had a brief interlude with the Clintons but they were also part of the problem (NAFTA, Auto Industry). After 9/11 NYC was a seriously depressing place to be and it's never really recovered.
Collectively we haven't caught up to the New World order where chaos and instability is the most profitable business to be in- wars, private milita, private security, arms dealers etc....som
