Business Week:

Wal-Mart has always been an intimidating taskmaster in China, extracting the lowest possible prices from suppliers. Last year it raised the bar a notch for these thousands of mostly small manufacturers, requiring that they meet or exceed all local environmental regulations. Wal-Mart gives them tips on how to boost energy efficiency and cut consumption of raw materials. It also delivers a blunt threat: Manufacturers have until 2012 to meet the new standards or risk being cut from the supply chain.

still wont help the fact that not only do they destroy the environment and economic environment of the communities they invade and take over, but that they pay so little to employees, those employees dont care and treat the customers like trash. Which I have seen some that would qualify, but its still not the way to have customers treated. And what is with 150 people standing in check out with only 2 cashiers, which are talking to other walmart employees who had cut in line to buy a soda and candy bar. Its like they hire the lowest and most untrained , uneducated and anti social people they can find, and then wont provide training or incentives so these people want to become better. Its a horrible place to shop.

I love the headline, but given Wal-Mart's past record on headlines vs. reality, I have to suspect that they will do the exact opposite of what they are proclaiming.

Walmart is "going Green" just like Walmart promised to sell goods only
MADE IN AMERICA and promised to NEVER DESTROY AMERICA'S
SMALL TOWN, MAIN STREET BUSINESSES.

Truth be known, there is only ONE GREEN that is of interest to
WALMART, $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

If it can make CHINA go green, I'll be impressed - that's where the vast majority of production is happening today, of course.

But I still won't shop there.

Walmart's relentless drive to squeeze every penny of efficiency out of absolutely everything that they do. Between their mighty computer networks, their extensive networks of video surveillance and their stranglehold on what is left of the US economy, they are a fearsome force.

Walmart is full of it.
They cant get small organic farms to supply them so they are trying to rewrite the defintion so mega-agriculture can supply them.

Walmart treats its suppliers like you and I would treat a disposable paper cup. If you don't fit in to their grand plan, they will just crush you and toss you in the dustbin.

Oh yeah, that's great, but Walmart still has no problem cutting down whole forests to build HUGE stores and ridiculous parking lots every 5 miles or so. Not to mention all the other non-eco friendly things that come with that, like contributing to our society's major problem with over-consumption. They could care less. They just want people to think they are "green" because it's trendy right now.

Walmart is not making anyone do anything. Like everything they do this is just a PR move to make people think they are green. Like their PR moves to make people think they are employee friendly.

Oh good grief, I am all for going green, but just because Wal-Mart is powerful doesn’t mean they should flaunt it. It tends to be a lot harder for some countries too meet all of the standers of green living. 2012 is going to be about two years from now, I hope that Wal-Mart gets off of her high horse and starts looking at things more reasonably.

You have a future in comedy if you can make other people laugh as hard as you just made me laugh.
